Casa Barranca Estate; Hiking trail, Pool, Jaccuzzi, Yoga studio, Sauna, Fitness.
Also known as the historic Pratt House, Casa Barranca is a private, 14 acre estate set above the Ojai Valley with panoramic mountain views, over 7,000 square feet of indoor living space, a resort-style pool with jacuzzi and cold plunge, ping pong, yoga studio, 2 person Sunlighten Sauna, outdoor fitness amenities and expansive indoor-outdoor gathering areas designed for relaxation, restoration, and connection.
From the home, guests can walk directly through orchards and gardens onto the Pratt Trail, offering immediate access to Ojai’s mountain hiking network and some of the region’s most scenic ridge and valley views. Access also leads to the main trailhead where folks can walk to downtown Ojai.
The Pratt House is an amazing location for family vacations, gatherings with friends or small private wellness retreats. Today, in keeping with the humble and pure ideals of the Arts and Crafts movement, as well as the owners dedication to wellness and environmentalism, the Pratt House and it's estate are powered by solar electricity, draw their water from artesian springs and are surrounded by a small organic olive, orange and avocado orchard and gardens which are farmed on sustainable, permaculture principles. All the water in the home goes through a whole house water system, and there is an RO system for filtered drining water. We use natural cleaning products, organic linen and cotton bedding and towels, and all stainless steel pans. Our pool features and ozonated system that sanitizes with H202.
Originally designed in 1909 by renowned architects Charles and Henry Greene, Casa Barranca blends timeless California architecture with the atmosphere of a secluded wellness retreat immersed in nature.
Charles and Henry Greene, the preeminent architects of the Arts and Crafts Movement, designed the Pratt House for Charles and Mary Pratt in 1909. The house, a perfect fusion of Japanese aesthetic and American practicality, sits on a ridgeline overlooking the valley of idyllic Ojai, California. The Greene and Greene architectural plans refer to the project as "The Pratt House" however the Pratts named their home and estate "Casa Barranca” referring to the seasonal river bed running through the property.
Noted as one of the Greenes' five "ultimate bungalows," the Pratt House embraces the Arts and Crafts ideal by creating an open and elegant living space without resorting to excessive decorative detail. Comprised of two wings unified by a central living room/entrance way, the house boasts five large bedrooms, six fireplaces, four bathrooms, three sleeping porches, an eat-in kitchen, a formal dining room, and front, rear and upper patios.
Architectural Digest notes that in the grace of the Pratt House "...the sun translates the Greenes' structural poetry into ever-shifting patterns of light against polished wood. At night... the silhouette of live oaks is framed against the Milky way. A closer approximation to Shangri-La is hard to imagine."

This was the perfect setting for our celebration in the midst of the Covid pandemic. The house is a craftsman style masterpiece and the grounds are beautiful. We loved relaxing on the back patio listening to the koi pond fountain and the kids loved the huge circular pool. The unusual sleeping porches were also a hit!
A stunningly gorgeous and perfectly maintained property-- filled to the brim with artistic detail and incredible craftsmanship. The gracious owners have lovingly restored an architectural masterpiece, turning it into a place of great spiritual as well as physical beauty.
House is in original condition which usually means just old and uncomfortable. This place is immaculate and super comfortable. Amazing how well everything works. Never rented a place as well stocked either with kitchen, games, etc.
These days during the pandemic are mad so we went to Ojai for an opportunity to be together, connect to nature and also to be safe.
This home was the first place that EXCEEDED the pictures on VRBO.
Absolutely bliss.
Thanks, Eliza.

A property stunning beyond words
Our stay at Casa Barranca will go in the top 5 experiences of my life (along with sailing in Bora Bora, flying a small plane across the country and turning 50 at the Post Ranch Inn). It's a spectacular property, maintained meticulously with amazing attention to detail; we were so lucky to have spent time there. Walking on the driveway as the morning mist dripped through the oaks and covered the vines was something I'll never forget. And sweet Rocco kept me company!

I spent a weekend here, teaching a Yoga retreat with sixteen students. From the moment I checked in, it was like I had arrived on a private Island. When I was introduced to the main house I was in awe of the beauty and cleanliness. Each bedroom offered it's own unique personality and life. The main room was inspiring, rustic and very well kept and dressed. We went swimming and hung out in the jacuzzi, which was very clean. If you like to cook then you better be serious because the kitchen is equipped with all the necessary tools to make whatever your taste buds desire. The only hick-up was the wine tasting was to quick. So if you want to enjoy serenity, scenery and infuse your body and mind with good vibes. I highly recommend this place.
I can’t say enough about this place. It is absolutely amazing. The house is stunning, classic Arts and Crafts, spacious and welcoming. The kitchen has absolutely everything you need in large quantities. I brought my own knives but didn’t need them as the ones provided were all sharp. Fresh flowers everywhere, crisp sheets, lovely towels. The outside grounds were equally perfect with stunning views of the mountains over the Barranca, separate pool area, meditation platforms, endless seating, outdoor deck dining and eating seating and a lovely Koi pond. The manager, Eliza, was always available and responsive by email and the caretaker, Hayden, whom I can’t thank enough, always answered his phone immediately. We were 8 in a family group ranging from 15-80 and no one wanted to leave.
It would be hard to summarize the amount of compliments I would like to praise this special property. We felt lucky to be able to stay at this beautiful home - warm lighting, soft sheets, endless places to sit and gather... If you love crafts houses, you will be pinching yourself. If you love meditation and yoga, and walking through a private garden, you will be more than pleased. A true retreat and also somehow fun for kids - many rooms to explore and endless grounds to run. We had a fun Easter Egg hunt on the lawn, coffee on the meditation platform, badminton through the days, gentle sleep, lovely showers, and easy hikes. The kids loved feeding the koi and I loved napping under the great California oaks, with their plentiful shade and shadows. Thank you also for the complimentary wine, a family owned vineyard! The location is excellent too, you would never know there were any people around when you are on premises, and yet town is only a mile or so away. This is truly a gem.
This house is a work of art and a thing of wonder, sited on a breathtaking, lush, private property . It's the rare example of a home on VRBO that greatly surpasses its description and photos. I was walking around with my jaw dropped open for the first day or two of our stay--I couldn't believe how beautiful this place is. It filled me with reverence, to be able to spend time with my family in this impeccably preserved, pure example of Arts & Crafts idealism. But this is not a stuffy museum. All the creature comforts are pristinely clean and up to date (comfortable beds, big fluffy towels). The kitchen is fully stocked with high quality pots/pans and sharp knives, not to mention a gorgeous huge range and two ovens--it was perfectly up for the task of a big thanksgiving feast. Every corner of this home is inviting and gracious. Every one of this property's perfect vistas comes with a set of Adirondack chairs or a little picnic table. The outdoor couch is huge and flanked by cozy heaters. There are seemingly endless paths to wander down with your morning coffee. Every day started with my daughter picking an orange or pomegranate or fig from one of the beautiful trees in the garden and sharing it for breakfast in the big, sunny kitchen of this house. Then we might walk on one of the nearby trails, or feed the koi fish, or play soccer or badminton on the HUGE, soft green lawn, or climb up on the huge boulder in the backyard....and in the evenings we'd sit with a glass of wine (or cocoa for my daughter) and watch the mountains turn pink, saying hello to the deer, rabbits, and coyotes as they skittered past. Then a cozy fire in the living room. Sometimes we'd go on a night-walk, and once we conversed with an owl who'd flown down to investigate our hooting! A whole week sped by, in this state of perfect contentment.
I'm running out of space, but I want to mention that the kind estate manager Andy made himself readily available and helped us out a number of times during our stay, including on Thanksgiving day. And the hosts were extremely conscientious about health/safety, during these covid times....Not only was the house spotlessly clean (with the windows left open for ventilation), but they'd also thoughtfully left medical grade air purifiers in several places throughout the home...along with gorgeous bouquets of fresh flowers in every room! Everything was above and beyond. Thank you SO MUCH.
