About Sales at Turning Leaf Vacation Rentals

Victorian Orchard’s original house dates back to pre-1880. The Wiggins family purchased the estate in 1904. A major renovation was done in 1906 bringing the house to it’s current appearance.

Here is some history, the Wiggin’s were a wealthy prominent family that also owned Fox Hunters Paradise, an inn above Deer Lake that was visited by wealthy Pittsburghers in 1820's. That house is gone now.

Victorian Orchard was bought by Henry Wiggins [grandson of Deer Lake house mentioned above] along with his wife Hulda and six children. It was as a farm where they raised sheep for wool, grew mostly irish potatoes, apples and honey. Frank Gleason bought the house from the Wiggins in 1921 and made it a popular boarding house in the area.

Interestingly, Victorian Orchard is still in the family, Henry Wiggins while serving in the Civil War befriended my mother’s great uncle who married one of Henry's daughters.

Our parents, Frank and Sue Wilhelm, bought the house in 1959. After my parents passed in 2003, we decided to renovate the property for a vacation rental so that we could keep it in the family. We all have such fond memories of living there… Sled riding, berry picking, just exploring on all that property, learning to drive in the field, rollerskating on the porch[and in the huge kitchen], bike riding, making swings on all the old trees, but mostly playing baseball with the neighborhood kids in that big field. We still all get together there on holidays for dinner and fun [if the house isn't rented]. All of us live nearby and do the upkeep ourselves. It is a family home that exudes the warmth and joy of several families being raised there.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

The property is full of history. Most of the Wiggins are buried across the road in the Lutheran cemetery, Cuthbert Wiggins [Henry's grandfather] helped build and remained on as the innkeeper at the Stone House. The Wiggins were known wagoneers on the National Road. The longest existent trace of the Braddock’s Trail is on our property, as well as, Old Orchard Camp mentioned in the French and Indian War where George Washington camped. That's how old orchard camp came into the name of our house. Antiquities from then have been found; a musket ball from the campaign and a few horseshoes.

Guestbook comments from the manager

I can not say enough about how beautiful this property was. We were in awe at the moment of arrival. The house was very clean, the yard was neatly kept, the pool was crystal clear. Despite Friday being rainy, we enjoyed the huge wrap around porch. The tornado warnings were…lets say…a concern. We did not let that ruin our time together. We took enough supplies to be self sufficient but the house was fully stocked with everything you could possibly need. The owners were a mile away but were very respectful of our privacy. They were just a phone call away if we needed them. My only regret was not getting the chance to meet them personally. They did give a dear friend of mine a tour of the house so I just got there a bit too late.

We had a wonderful time together and would rent this property again with out question. I have bragged so much about how great and nostalgic it was to so many people. I look forward to being able to rent it again and this time bring my husband and other couples….not just the moms this go around. Thank you for the wonderful historic house and memories.

Wonderful Thanksgiving at Victorian Orchard

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 12 (three generations) had the pleasure of staying at Victorian Orchard for Thanksgiving again for the second time. It was really like coming home! The whole family really looked forward to the stay and all the things they could do. The house had plenty of room to sleep, eat, play games and talk. And the kitchen had everything needed to prepare the full Thanksgiving meal! We rented the sheets offered, so it was easy to move in and make ourselves at home. The owners have lots of Legos and games for the kids to play with, and they set up the Christmas tree early and provided kid-friendly ornaments for them to use to decorate the tree. What fun!

The seventy acres provided ample room for driving our go-cart around and up the hill for viewing the beautiful countryside. And the guys brought their BB guns and rifles and set up targets for lots of shooting. We kept the fire pit going which was a gathering warm place for rest, relaxation and convivial drinks.

Needless to say, everyone was sad to leave, but we have lots of wonderful memories. Thanks!

Perfect for Our Stay

  • 5 of 5

We rented the house for a family wedding in the area. Eight adults stayed here very comfortably. The house has a lot of character which entertained us! It was too chilly to use the pool but it looked very nice. And we were too busy with sightseeing and wedding activities to use the fire pit or to do any hiking but those possibilities looked inviting. It was a very nice place to stay. Communication was very good before our visit. There is a lot to do in the area.
