About Desra McDonald

The original portion of this sweet little rock foundation cabin was built in 1940’s by a father for his family. We believe it as added on over the next few years, creating a square shaped cabin. In the 1960’s the family added on the back portion to modernize the cabin and included a bathroom, back bedroom and loft area.

In 2012, the daughter of that father sold the cabin to a group of friends making it into what you see today...River Rest. These friends have taken almost a year to completely refurbish everything up to current day standards. This includes new windows, all new flooring, new electrical wiring and a total gut and redo of the bathroom. The remodel allowed us to provide an electric stove as previously there was only an early 20th century wood burning cook stove. It was a beautiful piece but huge and unusable due to the fire hazard and insurance coverage. It was sad to see it go!

The floods of September 2013 have proved a huge impact on this little mountain community. Everyone is still restoring and rebuilding and looking forward to the future. We are so grateful and blessed to be able to continue to share this mountain property with guests and friends.

We are looking forward to creating more history with our families and yours…..

Enjoy River Rest.....

Wonderful cabin and perfect location!!!

  • 5 of 5

Our family had a great time at the River Rest Mountain Cottage!!! The name says it all! The river was beautiful and the national forests was right outside our back porch! We loved hiking, playing in the river and enjoyed everything the cabin has to offer! Jack and Desra have thought of everything! Our kids LOVED the tent in the loft!!! So creative and it allowed them to use their imaginations!:) This is our second time renting a cabin from Jack and Desra, their cabins are the best! The cabins location is perfect! We enjoyed Nederland, Estes, Allenspark and Lyons while we were there! We can't wait to come back!!! Thank you!!!

River Rest is the Perfect Mountain Get-Away for Us

  • 5 of 5

RMNP and Estes Park are certainly the feature attractions of the area. But the River Rest cabin near Raymond is off the beaten path and gives us the mountain experience we enjoy around the smaller mountain towns in the area. The cabin is in a very picturesque setting, has all the amenities we need, is rustically immaculate and the hosts are very accommodating. We love it here and plan to come back again...and again.

The Perfect Retreat to Enjoy Our Family

  • 5 of 5

I will be honest.... we ended up at River Rest, only because Jack's Cabin wasn't available, and I had read glowing reviews of Desra and Jack's hospitality! But you know the old saying... everything happens for a reason! This was the PERFECT place for our family of five to relax, unplug and enjoy each other! It's remote enough that you feel disconnected but close enough to attractions that if you want to do something, there is always something to do!

The rushing creek lulled us all to sleep and the cool air was a pleasant surprise when drinking your coffee on the porch in the morning! The upstairs loft was an AWESOME set up for our three children! Their own place to relax while they slept in "the tent"! The cabin is the perfect amount of refined mountain decor and we all enjoyed our home cooked meal on the grill! I will fondly remember the games at the kitchen table and giggles coming from upstairs!

Jack and Desra were delightful, helpful, hospitable and invested in our enjoyment! We can't wait to return!

This cabin & all things about it was perfect! The setting was serene & the cabin itself was cozy, pleasant, & oh so clean! Everything one could want or need was provided. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to visit this area but doesn't want to be smack in the middle of all the tourists. It's a short 25 minute drive to Estes Park, not to mention other interesting & fun places. I feel totally refreshed & revived after my four nights there. I will be back!! Thanks, Jack & Desra!

River Rest was the Best!

  • 5 of 5

My family had the opportunity to stay at the River Rest Cottage August 24-30th. The cabin was just as it was described, but even lovelier in person. It was warm and cheery, as well as inviting and very comforting. There was so much to do and see that we could have easily stayed 2 weeks! The cabin had everything you could need. Desra's touches are all over the cabin. It is beautifully decorated and accommodating. Just bring your clothes and food and be ready for the wilds of Colorado! Listening to the river trickling was music to my ears. Everyday was beautiful with chipmunks, squirrels, the magnificent Stellar Jay, Robbins and so much more. Upon arrival we were greeted by Jack, who showed us around. We found wonderful sugar cookies from a local bakery waiting for us. Jack even brought us some tasty cinnamon raisin bread one morning. I can't wait to go again. Jack and Desra were the most gracious and thoughtful hosts. They truly put their heart and soul into these beautiful cabins. I highly recommend any of their cabins!

Bliss by the Creek

  • 5 of 5

After staying in many cabins over the years, one striking thing when we walked in was how clean and fresh it was. The remodeled bathroom was great and the kitchen had good countertop space for preparing foods. We loved leaving the windows open at night to listen to the St. Vrain. This cabin is only 20 minutes from Wild Basin hiking, so it was a perfect fit for us. Desra (owner) has a lovely spirit and easily accommodated my special requests due to chemical sensitivities. We did see our first bear (a younger one) by the Raymond store and gave it lots of space as we backed away. We later learned from a neighbor that he was pretty harmless. We look forward to a return visit.
