About Desra McDonald

The original portion of this sweet little rock foundation cabin was built in 1940’s by a father for his family. We believe it as added on over the next few years, creating a square shaped cabin. In the 1960’s the family added on the back portion to modernize the cabin and included a bathroom, back bedroom and loft area.

In 2012, the daughter of that father sold the cabin to a group of friends making it into what you see today...River Rest. These friends have taken almost a year to completely refurbish everything up to current day standards. This includes new windows, all new flooring, new electrical wiring and a total gut and redo of the bathroom. The remodel allowed us to provide an electric stove as previously there was only an early 20th century wood burning cook stove. It was a beautiful piece but huge and unusable due to the fire hazard and insurance coverage. It was sad to see it go!

The floods of September 2013 have proved a huge impact on this little mountain community. Everyone is still restoring and rebuilding and looking forward to the future. We are so grateful and blessed to be able to continue to share this mountain property with guests and friends.

We are looking forward to creating more history with our families and yours…..

Enjoy River Rest.....

Cabin was very clean and Super Cute!

  • 5 of 5

Cabin was the perfect resting place for our vacation! There was plenty of room for our family of 5 to spread out after a long day of hiking in the mountains. Desra was very kind and understanding as this was our first VBRO experience. If we are ever in the area again, I would definitely stay at this cabin again.

REALLY get away from it all

  • 5 of 5

This cabin is beautifully finished and decorated inside, and has a heavenly location on the St Vrain river. And what could be more charming than to walk across a footbridge in approach to your vacation rental.

We've been to Estes numerous times and it was truly special to be more removed from the tourism chaos of town and the main entrance of the park. Don't hesitate in reserving this cabin because it has spotty internet or cell reception, or it is south of town a bit, but rather reserve because of these reasons. We didn't miss long hot showers at all, especially when we just laid around the cabin all day relaxing, reading books, napping and playing games with the kids when the rainy weather kept us in. We all enjoyed snuggling into the loft for a movie before bed. One quiet evening, our 13 year old son pulled the rocking chair near us on the couch and said "let's talk", and he meant it!

We enjoyed all the same great Estes and Nat'l Park activities as our previous vacations, but this time we stayed in a cabin that rivaled those experiences.

Perfect out of the way Colorado Getaway

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was tidy with cute country decor in the perfect mountain setting. The river in front of the cabin was a huge selling point and did not disappoint. Quaint mountain town of Lyons was about 20 minutes away and was fun to explore and Estes Park was only 30 minutes away.

Great location. Super relaxing.

  • 5 of 5

I brought 3 of my boys and my sister to this location to visit colleges and boulder in Rocky Mountain National Park. This location was perfect. Easy access to the park. Central location for visiting Boulder, Fort Collins, and Mt. Evans. Great spot to sit and enjoy the river and wildlife. Would love to return to this location :)

Perfect Cabin Getaway

  • 5 of 5

Exactly as described! Very secluded even though just 30 minutes form all the attractions. Very clean updated cabin. Nothing was missed! We will be back and would recommend this to anyone including friends and family.

The cabin was all it promised to be! We loved our cozy creekside getaway!

  • 5 of 5

We had everything we needed for a mountain retreat. The sound of the river was super relaxing at night, especially as we sat around the table as a family, playing different card games. We felt very "unplugged" even though the wi-fi worked just fine. Desra and Jack were quick to help us if we needed any help at the cabin.

Everything in the pictures was exactly as we found the beautiful cabin in person. Our only disappointment was when our time ran out and we had to leave.
