About Matthew Ellis
Mary Ellis has lived on St. John since 1984 when she moved to the island with her family. She has been in the rental business for over 25 years. Reservations are currently being managed by her son Matthew Ellis and long time St. John residents Dena and Todd will give you a warm welcome upon arrival!

What makes this Apartment unique
Great private location close to Cruz Bay! Frank Bay beach is just down the road and offers snorkeling and spectacular sunsets. Cruz Bay is just 10 minutes walking, so guests have the option of walking in for dinner, entertainment, etc. without the cost of parking. There is also dedicated parking if guests do choose to rent a car. Full kitchen means guests can also choose to eat in when desired.

We are 60 and 63. We could walk to town many times during the day.
Simple and basic, but livable for a week. Air conditioner very loud, but again kept place cool. Slight problem with pick-up from the Ferry Dock on arrival, but resolved with-in a little over an hour. We never could find a safe way to get into Frank Bay waters. A little sad on that, as we were so close I was hoping to just go there for a quick dip. St. John is a little remote for me. You have to get a taxi to go to all the beaches. I prefer staying in St. Thomas at Sapphire Beach Resorts where the beach is at your door. We did go to Jost Van Dyke for the day on the Inter Island Ferry. Easy and nice. Dena was very helpful and good to take us back to the Ferry the day we left. Also to the grocery store the day we arrived. Many thanks Dena. Went to Cinnamon Bay and Honeymoon Beaches. Walked downtown every day.
Perfect location for relaxing vacation in St. Johns.
We were attending a wedding and visiting friends that stay at Grande Bay. This property is close enough to Cruz Bay and the Grande Bay resort that we could easily walk the distance but was secluded enough to feel that you could get away from it all when you wanted quiet. We enjoyed eating breakfast out on the porch each morning and planning the activities for each day. Shawna met us at the ferry when we arrived and took us shopping so that we could pick up food for breakfast and some bottled water. She was very helpful and was available via phone message to answer any questions that we had. We very much enjoyed our stay in St. John's and would definitely stay in this property again.
Very comfortable, perfect location
My husband and I were lucky enough to stay here for 9 nights.The apartment was nothing fancy, but was VERY comfortable and clean. Full kitchen. Large porch overlooking a bird-sanctuary pond with a view of the ocean. Half a block to a small beach. 5-10 minute (hilly) walk to town, which was great, because it seemed that parking in town was a real hassle. We rented a jeep for our whole trip; next time, we will only rent for part of the trip because this location is so great. The owner, Matthew, was away during our stay so we didn't meet him, but he was very responsive to emails and gave us a deal on an extra night when our plans changed at the last minute due to a snowstorm. Dena, the property manager, met us at the ferry, then drove us to the market for groceries before bringing us to the apartment. When we had a question during our stay, she was immediately available by text. CONS: wifi is spotty and was basically nonexistent for our last couple of days. The apartment could have been better equipped; there was one decent frying pan, but the other pots and pans were very scratched-up teflon. We had to buy toilet paper and clothespins (the clothesline had only one clothespin and it was breezy out there!). Despite these very minor quibbles, we were very happy with our stay and would not hesitate to stay there again. THANK YOU Matthew and Dena!
Perfect location and comfortable!
This little apartment was very comfy. My husband and I especially liked the back deck which overlooked a pond and just beyond that a view of the ocean. Each morning we would have our breakfast out there and plan our day. Each evening we would have our happy hour. We grilled out several nights and bought a pizza another night and enjoyed eating outside. We would set out in the morning and hiked one of the many trails, eat our packed lunch and then find a beach to snorkel or relax in the afternoon. The apartment was a quick walk to the grocery store and to all of the restaurants. We had an especially nice dinner at Tapas.
Matt Ellis was a pleasure to work with and responded to my emails quickly. Dena met us at the ferry and showed us to the apartment. She gave us recommendations on restaurants, beaches and made sure we were settled in. Matt and Dena even took care of sending us something we had forgotten! I would highly recommend this apartment!
Great location. Less than ten minute walk to town. It had everything we needed.
Dena was great. She met us at the ferry and drove us to the market before taking us to the property. Super location for walking into town. The property could have used some maintenance but it had everything it said it did. The location was the best part. If you don't mind walking hills, this place is great. Close to town but far enough away to be really quiet.

Seagrape was just right for us. It was only about a 6-8 minute walk to the entire commercial district of Cruz Bay making the location very convenient. We especially appreciated the privacy provided by the trees and foliage on either side of the apartment. We could not see the neighbors on either side; nor could they see us but we had a view of both Frank Bay and Turner bay as well as the salt pond.
Being picked up at the dock was very helpful. Getting a shuttled to and from the grocery store after unloading our bags at the apartment, was terrific and essential. One recommendation: Don’t underestimate your drinking water needs. On our initial trip to the grocery, we got 8 gallons of “St. John” / “Island Pure” water. That got us through 4 days of our 14-day stay. After that, getting water became a daily priority. So get your water up-front, when you don’t have to carry it.
Hills on St. John are steep. We did not feel we needed a car and we really didn’t. We walked to town every day and multiple times a day sometimes; especially when we needed to get water. Will you need or want a car? I suppose it depends how often you are going to have to fetch water and your level of physical condition.
Showering was different than we experience at home where we can enjoy 50+ gallons of hot water. But, hey, we adapted. Besides, we were in the tropics where the air is 80 degrees and so is the ‘cold’ water, so how much hot water do you think you really need? We quickly learned to stretch our hot water usage and everything was fine. We appreciated the hotel-like bathroom amenities including bath soap, hand soap and shampoo, etc. Bed and bath linens were of fine quality. The bed was fully supportive and the closet was loaded with good hangers. The kitchen was well outfitted and included everything we needed.
For our needs, we would not consider any different accommodation or host for our next visit to St. John.
Seagrape apartment is conveniently located steps from Frank Bay and within minutes walking distance to our main town of Cruz Bay. Cruz Bay includes shopping, dining, watersports activities, hiking trails into our national park, taxi services, and is where the people ferry arrives on island from St. Thomas. Seagrape is an ideal location for single travelers or couples who want easy access to all St. John has to offer. The unit also includes free wifi access.
