Overview

About the property

2 Bedrooms, 2 Bathroom, Sleeps 6-7

'Mountain Solitude in the High Rockies' is a brand-new mountain cabin awaiting your visit. Our home is on 2 acres wooded with aspens and pines. Our cabin is centrally located to just about 'everything' Colorado. The cabin is just 1 mile from Pike National Forest and 10,000+ acres awaiting your exploration.

Our home features custom woodworking, a gorgeous stone fireplace, granite counter tops, our elk 'Elbert', and a host of fabulous cabin decorations to make you feel just like you are at home.

You might want to relax on one of our 2 full- sized decks. Our top deck offers a hammock for reading just the perfect book or the best naps you can ever enjoy. Our bottom deck has a brand-new gas grill that awaits your best culinary skills. After creating an amazing dinner, you can enjoy it on our deck while watching the sun go down. If it is bird watching you enjoy, we have lots including our famous humming birds that will fly literally right up to you as they try to beat each other to one of the homes 3 feeders. Not to mention our resident bear that sometimes comes for a visit if someone forgets to latch the trash can.

We offer 2 full bedrooms. Our master suite offers a hand made king sized log bed and a full closet. You can even do some star gazing right from your bed! Our lower level bedroom offers two twin hand made log beds, a full closet and a dresser for all of your goodies. Both bedrooms have all of the linens you will need to stay in our cabin.

We have 2 full bathrooms. One on each level and they are extremely convenient as the shower is separate from the vanity so four people can get ready for you Colorado adventures at the same time! Our bathrooms are equipped with personal hair dryers, bath towels, travel shampoos/soaps and lotions. We even keep a mini first aide kit for all of those small boo boos.

Our custom kitchen awaits all that your senses can create. It is fully stocked with everything you will need to prepare any meal. My favorite is the crock pot! I LOVE to put a meal in this and know when we come home from a day of exploration, supper is done! We have a full stock of spices and condiments awaiting your creations. We have seating for 6 at our solid oak dining table.

Relax is the name of the game at our cabin. We have a CD player with a stash of relaxing music. We also have LOTS of games, books, and DVDs for you to enjoy during your stay. There are some coloring books and magazines as well.

You might choose to relax by watching a movie on our 48 inch TV with Blue ray player while a nice warm fire burns in our custom fire place. You can bring your movies from home or enjoy one of our over 35+ we have provided...all family friendly of course!

We offer many local trail guides books if you wish to hike, climb a 14er, take a Jeep trail or get off the beaten path. We also offer a great 'field' guide to identify everything from wildlife to rocks to plants you might find during your stay. I guess this is the 'teacher' in me wanting to share these resources!

Our home is not equipped with satellite TV, internet, or a land line phone. We believe it is important for everyone to relax, unwind, and unattached from the worldly electronic forces that control us. With this said, we are Sprint customers and receive signal on our phones. Our phone internet does work from the cabin. So, you are not completely free of these forces.

Our cabin can be 'base camp' for the perfect Colorado mountain get-a-way! We are happy to share awesome site seeing ideas, trail heads to climb a 14er, mountain passes to travel whether by auto or those that require a Jeep if you need any suggestions. If you enjoy snowmobiling or ATV riding, this is just the cabin for you. You are just 1 mile from some excellent trails and just a handful more miles from others. Mount Silverheels just up from Como offers some great climbs and can be reached via Boreas Pass in Como. This pass is open early in the summer and a little later in the fall than most passes. This pass can also be your 'short-cut' to Breckenridge!

If you are a hunter or fisherman...you have found just your spot. With 10,000+ acres of Pike National Forest directly behind our home you can't go wrong. We are also just miles from Tarryall Reservoir and Tarryall Creek which are both known for some great fishing. We also have a private lake ('Cabin Lake') (pond in Indiana terms) just 1 mile from our cabin you can toss a line in with our resident pass. All fishing and hunting activities require specific licenses as required by Colorado Game and Wildlife. Fairplay has a forest service office where these and ATV permits can be purchased just 27 miles from the cabin.

If you enjoy seeing wildlife...you are in the heart of 'wild' country at our cabin. Species you could see in Park County or by our cabin are: antelope, elk, bears, mountain lions, coyote, fox, prairie dogs, chipmunks, squirrels, rabbits, and lots of birds. The elk herd passes through each spring. You will easily see their "remains" if you walk our land.

This cabin can be enjoyed any season of the year; however, during winter months a 4 wheel vehicle might be required to reach the cabin. Even though we are on a county maintained gravel road, we are not always the first to get plowed out during a winter storm. When a home sits at 9,575 feet in elevation, it is going to snow there in the winter! From November-March it is recommended you have a 4 wheel drive vehicle to reach the cabin.

If you can think of an outdoor activity, you will likely find it within minutes of our cabin. If you simply want to relax and find TRUE quiet....it is here at Mountain Solitude! You just don't find this Peace anywhere else on earth!

If your party is larger than 6, please discuss this with us. While we do NOT provide air mattresses, we are not opposed to the gentle use of them in some of the cabin's open areas so you can sleep more guests. Please call or email us to inquire about your specific needs. We are also more than happy to work with you personally. We allow guests that are looking to rent more than 2 weeks in advance the opportunity to mail us a separate damage deposit check so you out of pocket/up front costs are somewhat more manageable. We look forward to helping you have the BEST mountain vacation ever.

About Bill and Donita Walters

We love to travel and finally journeyed to Colorado in 2010. It was this trip that we realized we had to own a piece of this magnificent countryside. We were absolutely sold on the mountains and all that they offer. As incredibly busy people, Bill is in retail management and Donita teaches alternative education as well as coaches swimming, we found our souls to be completely refreshed each time we came back to the mountains. We traveled up and down the heart of Colorado's 14's until we found Fairplay. We chose this area because of its amazing beauty, abounding wildlife, and friendly people.

When not in Colorado, we live on our family farm in Indiana. We have 3 children.

Once we had our Cabin comfortable and 'perfect', we knew this was a treasure we must share. God has blessed us beyond belief and we knew this gift was to be shared. We sincerely hope you find your stay in our home relaxing and the best vacation you have ever experienced.

Bill and Donita Walters purchased this cabin in 2013

Why Bill and Donita Walters chose Jefferson

We like to be away from the 'beaten path' per say. This home is just far enough away from the hustle and bustle of life to completely relax, but yet just close enough to all that Colorado offers. This home is literally 17 miles up the mountain from the main road...we guarantee relaxation, peace, and quiet!

What makes this cabin unique

The views from our decks and the 'cabin' details the builder incorporated into this home sold us the minute we stepped foot on this property. The home is extremely family friendly and a great place to enjoy Colorado, as well as a great place to see wildlife, share God's amazing creation with family friends and refresh your mind and soul.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had an amazing 4 night stay at the Walters cabin. Very clean, new, and all the amenities to have a great vacation (BIG TV, MOVIES, GAMES, RADIO). The cabin had the perfect setup for a family that gave us family time, but space when needed with the two levels. We brought our side by side ATV and we were able to access near by trails right down from the cabin! Neighbors and owners informed us about the area and things to do (very welcoming). During our 4 day stay, we had a few excursions. We went to a few of the mountain passes by maps provided at the cabin. We visited Buena Vista and rode ATV trails right from the edge of town. Breckenridge was another excursion that was probably the most enjoyable for the entire family. The town had many shops, bob sledding track down the mountain, jeep tours, and more! There was also a ski lift you could ride up to one of the lodges....On the way back from Breck we took county road 4 and visited a lake right off the road and road our ATV up the canyon by the lake. Overall the cabin was great and was in a central location to all our activities during our stay which was VERY convenient!

Winter Wonderland!!

  • 5 of 5

There are no words to truly describe the beautiful scenery this property has to offer. We loved everything about our very first trip to Colorado and I am glad we chose this cabin because of the scenery. Being from central Texas we don't ever see snow; so this was the perfect paradise for our family. The Walters are super nice and are always just a phone call/text away to answer any concerns/question that we had. They are also super helpful on things to do around the area to explore. We can only image how this area looks in the spring and summer months. We have already recommended this cabin to co workers, and hope to come back during the summer. The cabin sits in such a calming and quiet environment. Thank you so much Walters family for sharing such a beautiful home.

Wonderful stay!

  • 5 of 5

We spent our 24th wedding anniversary eating dinner on the deck looking at the majestic view. Beautiful cabin, very comfortable and clean. We enjoyed breakfast with squirrels, deer and hummingbirds. The cabin was well equipped with everything except a corkscrew. The acreage was beautiful and natural. Donita went above and beyond to ensure that everything went well for our stay. We are planning on returning next summer.

10 days of peaceful solitute!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent 10 days at this amazing cabin! It was large enough to be roomy but small enough to be cozy. It had everything you could possibly want and need. We spend most of time doing absolutely nothing but enjoying the solitude and beautiful scenery. There are many activities and trails within driving distance. We went through Boreas Pass from Como into Breckenridge, St. Elmo, South Park Museum in Fairplay (a MUST for anyone with an interest in history!), and Buckskin Gulch in Alma. Buckskin Gulch was amazing! There is an old mountain cemetery which is amazing to see. We took Buckskin Gulch up to Kite Lake which was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen! This is a definite must do for anyone. We seen several beavers and a moose! We did get reception on our Verizon phones and were actually able to use the GPS on our phones to get to the cabin (though we had to follow the map lines instead of the road names since the names changed and some roads were omitted).

I would recommend this cabin to anyone who wants to get away for a long weekend or even a few weeks. It was very clean and had everything you would need to cook your meals; a comfortable couch to curl up on to watch a movie; plenty of seating on the decks where you can watch the squirrels and birds or read a book; and full of quiet serenity. We look forward to another vacation in this beautiful home next year!

White Christmas for Texans!

  • 5 of 5

I can't say enough good things about the Walters. Donita Walters was wonderful to work with from the start and make our trip easy and relaxed. The cabin was perfect and easy to find if you follow the directions provided. We were comfortable and cozy for the week we stayed at the cabin. All of us enjoyed playing games, reading and catching up with each other without the bother of computers, TV, phones or general day to day chaos. It was a very special white Christmas and Santa found us way up there in Colorado!

Wishes to all,

Lisa and Family
