About Linda Grimes

My parents met and got married on Oahu in the mid 1940s. My mother was a pilot and mechanic at Hickam Field. They moved to Georgia and I grew up there. I bought this land with my sister and mother and moved to Hawaii. I have spent much of my life traveling the world and now my sister has moved and i stayed and i am a jewelry designer. I still travel to Asia a lot searching for treasures for my jewelry, and have started this vacation home and the farming. I love plants and animals so this life has been great.

Linda Grimes purchased this cottage in 1989

Why Linda Grimes chose Kona Coast

When I first saw this property it was nothing but a thing called christmas berry but I knew it was where I should be. It was a long slow process turning it into what it is today, but worth every bit of it. Now, I just love being here.

Hale Meow Meow: four kitties and an amazing owner!

  • 5 of 5

Hale Meow Meow, owned and managed by proprietor Linda Grimes, is a delightful and purrrfect space located about 30 miles away from the more touristy and crowded Kona town. When we arrived at Hale Meow Meow, we were greeted by Linda and her four fur babies. Linda is full of great and helpful information that will help you navigate the area. For instance, while staying at Linda's cottage, we visited Kealakekue Bay (Captain Cook) by kayak, and were accompanied by a pod of spinner dolphins (awe-inspiring!), delightful Ho'okena Beach for relaxation, and the "two-step" beach for amazing snorkeling (we saw moray eels, turtles, and a variety of other amazing sea creatures while floating through the reef). In particular, Hale Meow Meow is a lovely space that is set amongst Linda's well-groomed tropical paradise. She offers all the amenities of home, i.e. spices, coffee, a fruit box (!), suntan lotion, you name it, she's got it! My most favorite part of Linda's space was the upstairs reading room. Every morning I would get up with my coffee, go upstairs (alone!) and write for an hour, it was delightful. I would highly recommend the cottage for anyone looking for peace, quite, and beauty, away from the madding crowds; you will not be disappointed!

Heaven in Paradise

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful surprise! I was expecting something nice but not this nice. Everything I could have imagined and more. We felt so welcome and so at home. It was wonderful! The perfect place to get out of the city and into nature. Hale Meow Meow was a true delight. The beautiful kitty in the ad, Pueo, actually does welcome you! He is a true charmer. The whole garden and cottage were a surprise. The owner has done a fabulous job in maintaining the natural beauty of the grounds and the sights and sounds of nature are all around you. We hope to return soon.

Perfect Haven for our Big Island Adventures

  • 5 of 5

We would definitely echo the other reviewers praise of Hale Meow Meow in our shared love of Linda's beautiful unique tropical hideaway. As commented by others, this is THE place if you are looking for the non-resort Hawaii experience. All the living space, bedrooms, and outdoor areas were wonderful. We also took advantage of the well equipped kitchen and outdoor grill. A wide range of basic cooking supplies (oils, butter, spices, etc.) were available. We stocked up at Choice Market, which was about 20 minutes north up hwy 11 which allowed us to spend many of our meal times at Hale Meow Meow. We used the outdoor grill and had some great meals, about 5 of the 7 nights we stayed here. Big Blender: Fresh fruit smoothies by morning, blended tropical drinks by night.

This was our first trip to the big island, and we found it a great location for experiencing a nice range of spots on the island. We did head up to the Kailua-Kona area for 2 great meals at Poke Shack and Umekes, but otherwise we steered pretty clear of the heavy tourist crowds. There were many great little shops and restaurants to visit in the area between Kailua and Hale Meow Meow. We took the local's tip from Linda's guest book and went for the beach / hike to Honomalino Bay. It was a bit of of a excursion trekking out there, but we had a really secluded experience once we got out there. Pack sunscreen, water shoes, water, and, snacks if you go out there.

From Hale Meow Meow we headed to Volcano and South Point for a day. Although it looks like a long way on the map, its an easy drive to Volcano. About 15 - 20 miles south of Hale Meow Meow the road really opens up and it is an easy cruise the rest of the way to Valcano. This natural wonder is every bit of what you would expect. No further description required by this visitor, plan a day out there if you have the time.

On our other full day adventure we headed up to the North end of the island. We took the inland route via hwy 11 to 18 to 190 to Waimea (eat at Merriman''s for a really nice meal), Hawi (super cute shops), Keokea Beach (nicest beach we visited) and Pololu Valley Lookout (spectacular views).

Greenway Coffee Farm tour, Snorkeling, KonaKozy Magic show, Kimura Lauhala Shop; so many other great experiences in our trip, but beginning and ending everyday at Hale Meow Meow was a great way to experience the Big Island of Kona.

peaceful with hospitality

  • 5 of 5

linda was so nice to me and my wife. the cottage was comfortable and well equipped .the kitchen was great for making meals and picnics for the beach.great fridge and barbecue plenty of incidentals .there were plenty of beach stuff from snorkels to chairs coolers etc. we were lucky to have plenty of fruit in season that linda would replenish daily as well as water. such a lush property with beautiful trees and flowers fabulous landscape. we loved the shower feeling like your outside was awesome. the cottage is decorated in a way where everyday you notice another decoration that you didn't see and everything works so well.pao the cat would visit most mornings to get a treat of milk or a little snack. he would stay a bit then go about his business. linda is nice to talk with and gave us great places to visit. the only thing i didn't like was saying goodby.

Unique Tropical Escape

  • 5 of 5

It's hard to imagine a beautiful sanctuary within the paradise that is Hawaii, but that is Hale Meow Meow. It is everything you might imagine of a tropical escape. There is beauty everywhere you look. The house itself reflects the natural surroundings with something artistic in every nook and cranny. Outside the gardens follow the Hawaiian landscape with lava rock walls and native flowers blooming in every corner. There are also fruit trees of every variety imaginable. At night you can hear the ripened fruit as it falls through the leaves and thuds on the ground, ready to be picked the next morning for breakfast. The owner, Linda, has thoughtfully stocked the house with many details to make the visit unique, a gift of homemade jam, fresh cut flowers inside and freshly picked fruit delivered to the door, and a herb cutting garden. There are also accessories to take on excursions like snorkeling equipment and beach gear. We had a wonderful visit!

Beautiful Sanctuary!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay away from the touristy Kailua-Kona. We appreciated the peace, the beauty of the gardens, the daily fresh fruit delivered to our door, and our visits from kitty Pueo! Linda is a gracious and generous host. We were able to use her snorkels/flippers, beach chairs and umbrella for our ventures out to the beaches. Picked fresh herbs and vegetables when we cooked up scrumptious meals at the cottage. So nice to not be in a cookie-cutter condo, but rather a balinese-style home built by our host. The cottage is private but Linda is close by if questions arise. It was wonderful to share stories and laughter with her. All around great - Mahalo Linda! D&R from Seattle...
