We are a family with our permanent home in St. Louis and had been skiing at Durango Mountain Resort (AKA Purgatory). We fell in love with the Durango area and people in the town. We had searched many areas in the west for our vacation property: Colorado, Montana, New Mexico and California. Durango was the right fit with many outdoor activities all year round. Rafting the Animas River, fishing in the San Juan, touring Silverton, Telluride, Pagosa Springs, and the Mesa Verde Cliff Dwellings is wonderful. The local restaurants are some of the best in the U. S. with a wide variety of international flavors and the best French bakery anywhere. There are many ski resorts within a 1.5-2 hour drive. Purgatory is only 30 minutes.

LAURA BUTSCH purchased this cabin in 2013

Why LAURA BUTSCH chose Southwest

Genuine historic log cabin with huge rock fireplace on 13 acres and National Forest all around is what attracted us to this particular property. It was a rehab project, that we have spent 18 months working on. There are brand new hardwood floors, a completely renovated kitchen, lovely bathrooms, lots of log furniture, antlers, deer hides/heads, leather, and some Ute Indian/tribal influences in the decor.

What makes this cabin unique

Views are AMAZING! You can see the Animas Mountain in front of the home and rows of mountains in the back. Turtle Lake is just across and down the road. Turtle Lake Valley is one of the most beautiful in La Plata County. Enjoy the large decks, sunroom, side porch and landscaped yard. Hiking trails are out the back door! Our private trails connect with the Log Chute Trail System and the Colorado Trail. The Durango Boulder Garden borders our property, as well as the National Forest. If you are planning a wedding, reunion, or special event, it is a perfect spot, with open areas, woods, mountains, decks, and a large cross in the rock garden. Our neighbor to the east is a photographer and neighbor across the road is an event planner to help you plan the perfect ceremony. EVENT SITE FEES APPLY!! (Minimum is $200 for 4 hours; Maximum is $500 for 10 hours. Limit of 75 persons.)

Pioneer Homestead has a true Colorado cowboy charm with upscale furnishings and decor, most of it custom designed and hand made. In many rentals, the interior finishes and decor appear that you could be in any suburb in America, but in this cabin you know that you've arrived in Durango! The wildlife are friendly and beautiful to watch in their natural habitats. We hope that you and your group of friends and family enjoy your experience there as much as we do!

Durango Cabin

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this cabin in early June and it was fantastic! I miss the daytime mountain view and the stars at night already. Laura was very responsive to our questions and needs. The cabin is as wonderful as you see in the pics and extremely comfortable. The kitchen is so convenient that we chose to have breakfast and dinner at the cabin so that our stay was really easy and relaxing. We are not skiiers but love CO in the summer. After fishing at a nearby lake one day, we had fresh trout for dinner that night. Also, the free train museum is really very good, as is the Durango-Silverton bus and train ride. There was so much to do for 5 days, and not enough time to do it all, so we will be back. Thanks so much, Laura!

Wonderful charming home, everything that you need!

  • 5 of 5

This home is wonderful with every single item that you could possibly need for your vacation away. The cabin is appointed with charm and each room and nook is decorated for your eyes as well as comfort. The owner has selected the nicest dinnerware, flatware, cooking and serving pieces - the best of anywhere we have ever stayed!!! We enjoyed the seating on the covered porches as well as the outside decks overlooking the mountain ranges. The weather was gorgeous while we were there in June, can't wait to return in the winter. We had a lovely time shopping downtown Durango, tasting- craft breweries and taking the narrow gauge railroad to Silverton. We added a special treat while visiting and toured Ouray - Switzerland in America! We would definitely recommend this cabin and look forward to staying again with our friends and family and exploring their Pioneer Trail on the sprawling 13 acres. A must see/stay!!!

Best Home Away From Home

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I absolutely love this property! Everything in the home is in excellent condition. The beds were very comfortable and I am very picky with beds. I love that there was no TV's or WiFi to connect to; just your family and nature. Laura was extremely accommodating with our 2 big dogs that are well trained. It's difficult to find a rental in Durango that allows more than 1 dog and big dogs at that. Thank you Laura! We will be staying again.

"Best Vacation Ever!"

  • 5 of 5

I planned a vacation for my family and it was a big hit. The location is perfect! The cabin is cozy and we enjoyed hanging out when tried from all the fun activities in the area. The cabin really has the western Colorado look and feel which we enjoyed. Would absolutely stay here again.

Great Family Time Rental in Nature

  • 5 of 5

When we drove up we just knew we were in for an amazing time. Easy to get to, private, beautifully decorated with everything one would need for a wonderful retreat. Close enough to Durango to make it in for some delicious food (maybe 10 minutes from cabin to parking downtown) but the cabins location made you feel you were 'away from it all'. Kitchen includes everything you could think of and was big enough to accommodate the chefs in our family. Dining room table was spacious for the 6 of us. Laura has thought of everything to have an very enjoyable time; we weren't lacking for anything! There are both types of sitting area: around a firepit (we never used due to rainy season), outside on deck, and an area at front that was window filled but covered. I have to admit I would have been very happy to just stay on property but the rest of family had some outdoor adventures planned: rafting, and ATVs. We were actually up for wedding in Purgatory and the rest of extended family stayed in the resort there as it was closer to venue but we were SO HAPPY to have had our place in nature, despite the 40 minute drive into Purgatory. Laura was a phone call away for any issues or any questions which for me was nice to know. Bunk house was a nice touch for the one in our group who preferred to stay up late playing guitar though I honestly don't feel any of us tucked away in our rooms would have heard a thing due to the solid nature of the cabin. Beautiful!
