About LAURA BUTSCH

We are a family with our permanent home in St. Louis and had been skiing at Durango Mountain Resort (AKA Purgatory). We fell in love with the Durango area and people in the town. We had searched many areas in the west for our vacation property: Colorado, Montana, New Mexico and California. Durango was the right fit with many outdoor activities all year round. Rafting the Animas River, fishing in the San Juan, touring Silverton, Telluride, Pagosa Springs, and the Mesa Verde Cliff Dwellings is wonderful. The local restaurants are some of the best in the U. S. with a wide variety of international flavors and the best French bakery anywhere. There are many ski resorts within a 1.5-2 hour drive. Purgatory is only 30 minutes.

LAURA BUTSCH purchased this cabin in 2013

Why LAURA BUTSCH chose Southwest

Genuine historic log cabin with huge rock fireplace on 13 acres and National Forest all around is what attracted us to this particular property. It was a rehab project, that we have spent 18 months working on. There are brand new hardwood floors, a completely renovated kitchen, lovely bathrooms, lots of log furniture, antlers, deer hides/heads, leather, and some Ute Indian/tribal influences in the decor.

What makes this cabin unique

Views are AMAZING! You can see the Animas Mountain in front of the home and rows of mountains in the back. Turtle Lake is just across and down the road. Turtle Lake Valley is one of the most beautiful in La Plata County. Enjoy the large decks, sunroom, side porch and landscaped yard. Hiking trails are out the back door! Our private trails connect with the Log Chute Trail System and the Colorado Trail. The Durango Boulder Garden borders our property, as well as the National Forest. If you are planning a wedding, reunion, or special event, it is a perfect spot, with open areas, woods, mountains, decks, and a large cross in the rock garden. Our neighbor to the east is a photographer and neighbor across the road is an event planner to help you plan the perfect ceremony. EVENT SITE FEES APPLY!! (Minimum is $200 for 4 hours; Maximum is $500 for 10 hours. Limit of 75 persons.)

Notes:
Pioneer Homestead has a true Colorado cowboy charm with upscale furnishings and decor, most of it custom designed and hand made. In many rentals, the interior finishes and decor appear that you could be in any suburb in America, but in this cabin you know that you've arrived in Durango! The wildlife are friendly and beautiful to watch in their natural habitats. We hope that you and your group of friends and family enjoy your experience there as much as we do!

Best Home Away From Home

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I absolutely love this property! Everything in the home is in excellent condition. The beds were very comfortable and I am very picky with beds. I love that there was no TV's or WiFi to connect to; just your family and nature. Laura was extremely accommodating with our 2 big dogs that are well trained. It's difficult to find a rental in Durango that allows more than 1 dog and big dogs at that. Thank you Laura! We will be staying again.

"Best Vacation Ever!"

  • 5 of 5

I planned a vacation for my family and it was a big hit. The location is perfect! The cabin is cozy and we enjoyed hanging out when tried from all the fun activities in the area. The cabin really has the western Colorado look and feel which we enjoyed. Would absolutely stay here again.

Great Family Time Rental in Nature

  • 5 of 5

When we drove up we just knew we were in for an amazing time. Easy to get to, private, beautifully decorated with everything one would need for a wonderful retreat. Close enough to Durango to make it in for some delicious food (maybe 10 minutes from cabin to parking downtown) but the cabins location made you feel you were 'away from it all'. Kitchen includes everything you could think of and was big enough to accommodate the chefs in our family. Dining room table was spacious for the 6 of us. Laura has thought of everything to have an very enjoyable time; we weren't lacking for anything! There are both types of sitting area: around a firepit (we never used due to rainy season), outside on deck, and an area at front that was window filled but covered. I have to admit I would have been very happy to just stay on property but the rest of family had some outdoor adventures planned: rafting, and ATVs. We were actually up for wedding in Purgatory and the rest of extended family stayed in the resort there as it was closer to venue but we were SO HAPPY to have had our place in nature, despite the 40 minute drive into Purgatory. Laura was a phone call away for any issues or any questions which for me was nice to know. Bunk house was a nice touch for the one in our group who preferred to stay up late playing guitar though I honestly don't feel any of us tucked away in our rooms would have heard a thing due to the solid nature of the cabin. Beautiful!

Perfect Vacation Rental

  • 5 of 5

Wow! Our family stayed here for our Spring Break and it was absolutely perfect! This log home is adorable and the decor is fabulous - very Colorado. We cooked in the kitchen, had a fire in the fireplace, slept in the comfortable beds, spent time relaxing and enjoying the ambiance both inside and out on the deck - all great experiences. The property is wooded and natural. We enjoyed many area activities while there and this house was the perfect hub.

We will definitely recommend this rental.

An enjoyable stay!

  • 4 of 5

Seven of us stayed here for a week in June. Overall we really enjoyed our stay. The location was definitely the best part of the house. Out of the driveway to the left was the San Juan Forest which was beautiful to hike in and look for wildlife every night at dusk. To the right a mile was the Colorado Trail where we enjoyed hiking and playing in the creek. Our family is always on the go so being so close to town was important. We were in and out of town several times a day. We enjoyed riding the train, visiting Lemon and Vallecito Lake with beautiful hikes, horseback riding, eating lunch at James Ranch, Mesa Verde National Park, rafting down the river . . . all these things and more were right out the door.

As far as the house we were disappointed in a few things. The Pioneer Trail was very steep and difficult for our 10 & 12 years olds to climb (as well as our 60 year old parents). So hiking right in the backyard wasn't possible. Being a log home it was VERY dark inside (although beautifully decorated) and many light bulbs were burned out. The bunk house ceiling fan and lights weren't working so my parents used a lantern for their stay. The owner tried her best to fix things, even sending out an electrician, but nothing could be done (as she was helping from Missouri). Turtle Lake, as far as we could tell, is a private lake so there was no opportunity for us to get near it. And we only found the trail that led to the view of it on our last night. The upstairs tub is just that -- a tub. Even though there is a shower head attached above it the only way to "shower" was to lay in the tub and get under it. So, basically, we all shared the downstairs shower.

We enjoyed the fire pit (next to the house) almost daily and my daughter loved the hammock. The porch was great for star watching. Most everything that we needed to live for the week was provided (including things like q-tips, band-aids, cortizone cream etc) so that was so nice when we found our own supplies lacking. The price of the house was very reasonable and I would definitely recommend this house to anyone who wants to enjoy all that Durango has to offer!

Owner's Response: Thank you for renting Pioneer Homestead and taking time to write a review, reiterating my property description so others are aware. Yes this is an historic log cabin in the mountains in a rural setting which comes with unique issues. La Plata County electric had found an underground breech in a connector wire, causing recent electrical shortages. The breech is now repaired. I keep drawers full of lightbulbs for guests to use if one goes out, and have also reminded my cleaning crew to check for burnt out bulbs. Since the cabin is made of logs and has new hardwood flooring, it can feel dark inside. Just raise all the shades on the large picture windows to let in natural sunlight. The Pioneer Trail has many ways to go up, some steeper than others. It levels out near the property line of the National Forest, and then keeps going up to the log chute trail and finally Animas Overlook and the Colorado Trail. Our kids and guests of all ages hike it frequently. Good hiking shoes are needed, as well as your body's adjustment to altitude and good physical condition. The lake can be seen within a two minute walk from the cabin; it's the trail just past the firepit leading into the boulder garden. We call this "moonrise point". It is great for stargazing. I even had renters have their wedding there. Turtle Lake is privately owned by surrounding property owners; Haviland Lake for rainbow trout fishing and swimming is where we like to go, though we do swim in Turtke Lake and have not had a problem using it. Yes the upstairs bath is a tub with a pull-out shower head. The shower/bath combination is on the first floor. So if you are wanting a property with more than one stand-up shower, Pioneer Homestead will not meet those needs. My daughters and I are bath people, so it has never been a problem for us personally. Or we swim in the lake, Junction Creek, or Animas River and call it a day! That's all part of the mountain lifestyle in Durango!
