About the host
Hosted by Chris Cagle
Hi! My name is Chris and my wife's name is Angie - here's the short story of the house.
I purchased the lot back in 2020 because my Dad had built several houses over his lifetime and I always wanted to build one myself. After the purchase, my Dad and I went back and forth brainstorming ideas and he finally drew me some rough plans. I then had them locally altered a bit and engineered, and started applying for permits back in 2021 / 2022 (it can be an extended process :) ).
We began construction in 2022 and finished in 2024. I used local contractors for things like the foundation and framing that had already worked on large custom homes in the area. We did a lot of the work on the inside ourselves, including hanging and putting together all the kitchen cabinets and other things.
Overall it was a long complex project, but we hope you liked you it turned out. We lived in the house temporarily, however due to work we ended up moving to San Jose and are now renting out the house short term.

Why they chose this property
The neighborhood caught my eye because it was peaceful and had a rural feel but was only about a 15 minute drive from most major shopping (like Folsom Costco, the Palladio in Folsom, etc.). Also, the house is basically right next to the lake - you can walk to the lake in maybe 10 minutes, and bike there is about 4-5 minutes. The slope of the lot and the views I knew we'd get also got me interested.
What makes this property unique
I think there are several things that make this property both unique and probably stand out against other rentals - first, this is not a tract or builder grade house - it's a one of a kind custom designed home. Second, and since we are on a steep slope, you really get incredible views out of the back of the house in my opinion - the sunrises are great, and standing out on the balcony on starry nights is awesome. Further, we chose a more contemporary / modern design and felt like we kept that theme throughout the house. The home square footage is not huge compared to other custom houses (at just over 2K vs. some 3K or 4K) but we tried to make the space feel large with high ceilings everywhere we could, 3 bedrooms plus an office, and keeping the entire upper room pretty open so you can talk in the kitchen or converse with people in the living or dining rooms.
