Wisconsin’s second-tallest mountain and a peaceful, clear-water chain of lakes are among the many features of our family cottage located in unincorporated Mt. Morris, in the heart of recreation-rich Waushara County.
Wake up to the sparkling, spring-fed, 15-acre Emerald Lake. Dive off our wide pier and splash out to our swimming raft. Kayak, canoe, row or motor under a white footbridge onto Morris Lake, the skiable 180-acre lake and heart of the five-lake Morris chain.
Watch the sun rise over Mt. Morris, and walk just a few steps to our private beach on Morris Lake for a flaming central-Wisconsin sunset. Back at The Cottage, an over-sized hammock invites you to an afternoon nap. When the moon and stars come out, grill a dinner and sit down at our 8-seat picnic table, then enjoy a campfire on our spacious sand patio. Ample split wood is provided.
Guests have free access to our rowboat, canoe, paddle board and two kayaks, with paddles and life jackets provided. Powerboat rentals are available in Wautoma, seven miles away. Large-mouth bass, bluegill, and sunfish are abundant and ready to strike. Spend the day netting painted turtles or searching for herons, beavers and deer along the shores of the chain of lakes.
The cottage's large, glassed-in porch has a panoramic view of Emerald Lake and is ideal for evening card games or quiet reading. The vintage tube-powered stereo radio was recently restored and is ready for your listening pleasure.
The master bedroom is set apart from the three others and just steps from a new wood-burning stove with a hearth made of local stone. The cottage's beds comfortably sleep eight. While we have set our occupancy limit at eight, if your family requires a little more room, we have two canvas cots and a reclining leather couch that may accommodate your needs. Please remember, there will be an additional charge for guest counts over eight.
The kitchen is fully stocked with pots and pans, a gas stove and microwave oven, a two-well sink, refrigerator and utensils. An antique oak pedestal table comfortably seats six, expandable to eight.
From The Cottage, it’s just a short walk to unincorporated Mt. Morris, which features a quaint, 19th-century mill that is enjoying a second life as an ice cream and coffee shop. Just steps down the road is The Trading Post, a popular restaurant and night spot where good food and live music attract locals and visitors from throughout the area.
Hike or drive up Mt. Morris and enjoy the panoramic views of central Wisconsin farmland, as well as tennis, horse shoe pits, a play lot, and picnic area. On the other side of the mountain is Nordic Mountain resort, offering exciting mountain bike trails and a wake-board training facility. An archery golf course--where bows and arrows replace balls and clubs--can be found just a short drive away.
Mt. Morris is in the heart of Waushara County, a recreational jewel in heartland America. Within a 10-minute drive from the cottage, the 27-hole Waushara Country Club features elevated tees, wooded fairways, and plentiful hills and water features. Waushara County’s rolling hills and smooth-running roads are ideal for bicycle touring. Nearby farms offer strawberry picking and foot-long sweetcorn all summer long.
Visit a cluster of Amish farms outside Wautoma, where baked goods, quilts, furniture and crafts are sold. Explore the antique shops of nearby Wild Rose or Berlin. Visit the rock quarry-cum-nature park in Redgranite, and swim in the deep quarry lake. Enjoy a polka band at the Golden Nugget in nearby Pine River, or rent an over-sized inner tube or a compact canoe and paddle down Waupaca’s Crystal River.
The Cottage has been in our family for nearly 70 years, and some of our guests have been visiting for 20 years and more. Decades have passed since our immigrant grandparents bought the cottage as a wedding present for our parents, but the rest and recreation of a week on the lake is one thing that, thankfully, never seems to change.

Cozy, great getaway
This was our second visit to the cottage and we had an even better time this visit. Walking in, it smelled like fall (leaves and pine wood and grandma’s cabin)! The new bathroom/remodel was a hit and the wood stove took the bite out of the chilly October air. My family loved the record player and lake view. This is a great place to unwind and make memories with family. I hope it never changes!
So glad to have you back again in Mt. Morris. Hope you got under some of the thick warm blankets we leave up there, although between the heater and the wood-burning stove, it is usually nice and toasty.
Our favorite in the fall is to take a hike to the top of the Mountain to look at the colors for as far as the eye can see. Nice time for some mountain biking or hiking the trails too. We love to hear that new families are building their own memories. Hope to see you back again.
Just what I needed!
Spent a long weekend at the Mt. Morris Cottage...so peaceful and cozy! Really appreciated the water equipment (kayak and SUP) and the fire pit, and enjoyed hanging out in the hammock, hiking to the nearby coffee shop, restaurant and scenic mountains. The cabin itself is so clean, roomy, and comfortable, with a beautiful view of the lake from the porch. Thank you, Marcia, for all of your input and for sharing your cabin paradise!
We are so happy to hear that you enjoyed your long weekend at the Cottage. Those few days usually do a great job of recharging the batteries! Our family takes great pride in having the Cottage clean and ready for guests, and we hope the night sky was as beautiful as always while you were sitting by the fire...did you have a chance to enjoy S'mores? Thanks for the great review, and we hope you find time to come back and visit again.
Just spent a week at this lovely cottage with our family. The location was really wonderful. We had lots of swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding and fishing. The cottage provided everything we needed! The cottage is a short walk or kayak trip to a delightful coffee/ice cream shop and a restaurant/bar. Be on the lookout for lots of little fish and turtles swimming right by the dock.
Thank you kindly for the great review! Sounds like you mixed in some of our family favorites, with rest, relaxation, activity, and adventure. Rumor has it that the lake has some big fish in it too...Bass and Northern for sure. We seem to find the same ones you found...lots of Bluegill, Sunfish, and Perch. Loads of fun for the kids off the end of the pier.
Exceptional Quality Family Time
I am a single mother of four. I have three teenagers and a six year old and trying to find things to do as a family that suits all of our needs is a task. At this destination I could not have asked for a better time. Our family connected during our stay whether we went out into the middle of the lake to swim, go quarry jumping, a bonfire, turtle hunting, listening to records, or playing games. What a great stay! The cottage was in impeccable condition and very clean. The owners have been very prompt in responding when an email was sent. Honestly, great lifetime memories were made for my family and we will for sure be going back! It was just perfect. Thank you, for allowing my family to enjoy this time together.
We are so happy to hear that you thoroughly enjoyed your stay at our Cottage, and we are pleased that you found everything in impeccable condition. Sounds like you found the quarries in Red Granite, so you must have had some wonderful summer weather! In case of rain, Red Granite also offers bowling at Lambeaul Lanes; there is also bowling in Wautoma at Dogger's Bar & Lanes. With the wide range of ages you have, you might consider a 30 minute ride north to the Waupaca area, where you can hike or bike trails at Hartman Creek State Park. There are singletrack bike trails ranging from 'easy' to 'most difficult', and the Ice Age Trail passes through the park. One family secret when you go turtle "hunting"...we used to paint our initials on the turtle shell with just a tiny bit of nail polish, then we would see if we caught the same turtle later in the week! Thanks for the kind review, and we look forward to more family memories next summer!
Sure to return to this tranquil vacation spot
This cabin was such an unexpected find! I was thrilled to find such a reasonably priced, lakeside cabin within a couple hours of my home. It exceeded my expectations. The setting was perfect for a relaxing and rejuvenating getaway. I could not ask for more than mornings on the sunlit porch, afternoons on the water, and evenings by the campfire. Visiting from the city, it was such a blessing to gaze at the star-filled skies at night and listen to the sounds of nature. I also loved all of the personal touches - the helpful local guidebook on the kitchen table, all of the cookware and amenities, and the stocked game closet. And I cannot say enough about the helpfulness of the property manager. My calls and emails were always answered promptly, the booking was a breeze, and she was immediately responsive when I called during my visit. I only wish that I might have stayed longer.
Sounds like you played for the cycle--morning coffee on the porch, swimming in the lake, relaxing by the fire. The night sky really is impressive, especially when roasting marshmallows on the lakeside patio.
Thanks for mentioning the guidebook. Everyone in the family loves highlighting their favorite restaurants, golf courses and bike rides.
"Mini-moon" at the Cottage
My husband and I were looking for somewhere to relax for a few days after our wedding. I have been calling this vacation our "Mini-moon" as we intend to go on our honeymoon in January. This cottage was perfect! We had such a wonderful time. The cabin was clean, cozy, and well stocked with everything we needed. It was a bit chilly during our stay, but the wood stove and blankets kept us warm, and we enjoyed the board games and record player. Our dog loved swimming in the lake, and it was so nice she was able to join us. Marcia was very responsive, and quickly answered any questions we had. We cannot wait to come stay here again!
We're happy to hear you had such a wonderful time at our cottage. Glad the new wood fireplace took the chill off a brisk late summer evening. Glad your dog liked it too--ours has learned to climb the ladder onto the raft! We hope you stay again next year!
