Secluded Forest Retreat With The Little Devil Track River Running Through.

Bedrooms 1
Half Baths1
Space 1,100 sq. ft.
Property type cabin
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

Bedroom With 1/2 Bath, Sleeping Loft and a sleeper Sofa in the living room.

Open May - November this is a wilderness beaver, eagles, mink, moose, and the silence. We are surrounded by state forest all around and our one neighbor is rarely heard from for seen at all. The small river is accessible right out your front door, and kids like to splash, catch and net things!

But so many things to do beckon beyond the cabin property it's almost overwhelming. The Lake Superior Hiking Trail (which runs from Duluth to Canada) is very nearby. Devils Track Lake, a rather large lake has good fishing and swimming is down the road a couple of miles. The galleries, food and music in 'town' are extraordinary. Grand Marais really has become quite a hub for artists of all types. The North House Folk School is a one of a kind craftshop with adult classes and the Gunflint Tavern features local and national talent in a funky intimate atmosphere.

Almost half of the people who stay at our cabin are repeat visitors. When you read our guestbook you can see the fun (and quiet relaxation) unfold for so many, rain or shine.

About Chris Gillis

We inherited this one of a kind bungalow from my parents some years ago and has proved to be very popular spot indeed!

The cabin is very cozy in any weather, and is filled with local and family memorabilia. Chris' father was a famous jazz pianist. Chris is also a pianist and often performs in town.

We ourselves live in a condo in town and keep an eye on details that need attention or that would make renter stay a little more comfortable. By reading our guestbook over the years, it is only too obvious that everyone is enjoying themselves!

Chris Gillis purchased this cabin in 1964

Why Chris Gillis chose Northeast

We mention our guestbook because it is so full of the many things families found to do, in great detail. What animals they bumped into, which videos they watched. It is a little treasure trove, so please do page through.

The pond is really just a woodland creek to be enjoyed for it's own sake, kids do get in, canoe or no. It can be hot in high summer and a little wading can go a long ways. We usually keep a little net under the cabin near the water there for frogs and what have you!

What makes this cabin unique

We are close to town and yet well off the road and tucked into the forest on all sides. The cabin itself is a gem and the glass wall facing south makes for a beautiful bright view. Large grassy (mowed) area in front with the firepit is nice to lounge on right up to the Little Devil Track river. The fishing (and swimming) here is for kids, but there are unlimited places a few miles away for various types of adult fishing. Beaver, Great Blue Heron, Kingfisher, mink and moose move up and down the river at dusk.

We have a complete circle turnaround for parking. The woodstove is modern and efficient with ample split birch firewood, and small European wall heat panels heat the rooms. The loft has a full mattress although many people, especially the kids prefer sleeping bags. All linens and towels are provided though.

You can see the water from our Artesian well flowing just outside the window, ice cold and pure.

This is a truly enchanted enchanting piece of land that embodies nature, peace and wonder 2nd to non

My family enjoyed this gorgeous A frame to an almost immaculate degree! My son, 5 years old, my wife and Dog were all very thrilled upon Arrival, when entering you will instantly feel a unique feeling of peace, in this cabin is very good energies, we enjoyed the excellent books, it's unique layout is open and yet cozy, the deck overlooks a backyard reminiscent of any fairytale story with a backdrop of forest and calm river shallow and slow enough to not encroach and at the same time , foretelling of the depths and awe inspiring nature of the Lake superior to which it flows... words hardly do justice even to a poet, the grand piano is amazing! I hadn't ever played one, and consider myself a musician, now i have a new outlook, my son and wife as well, found this grand piano to have an evokative force to create. We will definitely be coming back, And for the record, i have seen most of the united states and all of its wonders, Lake Superior and this particular stretch of its shores are the most powerful empowering piece of nature i have felt to date... Thank you Chris Gillis and Family!

Quiet, secluded, and peaceful.

  • 4 of 5

We saw a black bear... it walked past our vehicle and towards the cabin at 6:45 a.m. on Wednesday. The sound of the stream behind the cabin was very calming. The VHS movie selection was nice during rainy days/evenings.

Loved our stay!

  • 5 of 5

We loved this beautiful cabin! Our daughter spent the entire time fishing and even learned to bait her own hook and take off the fish! It was very quiet and peaceful, and the cabin was beautiful with everything we needed. Huge bonus was the washer and dryer! I loved going home with clean clothes in our suitcases. Can't wait to stay again and for longer!

Wild and private but minutes from a lovely town

  • 5 of 5

We loved the cabin! It was so private with no other cabins visible. We swam in the small swimming hole in the river. There were no mosquitoes during the day, but they did come out at dusk. It was great to great books on the porch without getting mauled! The space inside is beautiful, and we loved looking through all the interesting book titles. There were even children's books, which our 16 month old enjoyed pulling off the shelf. We hiked at Pincushion Mountain nearby, which has some of the best views of Lake Superior I've ever seen. We enjoyed some meals in Grand Marais, and watched the sun set over the bay. We had two adults and one baby in the bedroom, which was a little tight with the pack and play crib, but it worked. Then one adult in the loft, one on the futon, and one on the couch. Only the bedroom was private, but it did amount to four different sleeping spaces, which worked for us.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the details on the sleeping situations. It can be difficult for guests to get the full picture of our layout. Everybody seems to figure out how it will work best for their gang! Hope to see you another time...... Chris & Anne
