Overview

About the property

Bedroom With 1/2 Bath, Sleeping Loft and a sleeper Sofa in the living room.

Open May - November this is a wilderness beaver, eagles, mink, moose, and the silence. We are surrounded by state forest all around and our one neighbor is rarely heard from for seen at all. The small river is accessible right out your front door, and kids like to splash, catch and net things!

But so many things to do beckon beyond the cabin property it's almost overwhelming. The Lake Superior Hiking Trail (which runs from Duluth to Canada) is very nearby. Devils Track Lake, a rather large lake has good fishing and swimming is down the road a couple of miles. The galleries, food and music in 'town' are extraordinary. Grand Marais really has become quite a hub for artists of all types. The North House Folk School is a one of a kind craftshop with adult classes and the Gunflint Tavern features local and national talent in a funky intimate atmosphere.

Almost half of the people who stay at our cabin are repeat visitors. When you read our guestbook you can see the fun (and quiet relaxation) unfold for so many, rain or shine.

About Chris Gillis

We inherited this one of a kind bungalow from my parents some years ago and has proved to be very popular spot indeed!

The cabin is very cozy in any weather, and is filled with local and family memorabilia. Chris' father was a famous jazz pianist. Chris is also a pianist and often performs in town.

We ourselves live in a condo in town and keep an eye on details that need attention or that would make renter stay a little more comfortable. By reading our guestbook over the years, it is only too obvious that everyone is enjoying themselves!

Chris Gillis purchased this cabin in 1964

Why Chris Gillis chose Northeast

We mention our guestbook because it is so full of the many things families found to do, in great detail. What animals they bumped into, which videos they watched. It is a little treasure trove, so please do page through.

The pond is really just a woodland creek to be enjoyed for it's own sake, kids do get in, canoe or no. It can be hot in high summer and a little wading can go a long ways. We usually keep a little net under the cabin near the water there for frogs and what have you!

What makes this cabin unique

We are close to town and yet well off the road and tucked into the forest on all sides. The cabin itself is a gem and the glass wall facing south makes for a beautiful bright view. Large grassy (mowed) area in front with the firepit is nice to lounge on right up to the Little Devil Track river. The fishing (and swimming) here is for kids, but there are unlimited places a few miles away for various types of adult fishing. Beaver, Great Blue Heron, Kingfisher, mink and moose move up and down the river at dusk.

We have a complete circle turnaround for parking. The woodstove is modern and efficient with ample split birch firewood, and small European wall heat panels heat the rooms. The loft has an inflatable (automatic) full mattress although many people, especially the kids prefer sleeping bags. All linens are provided though.

You can see the water from our Artesian well flowing just outside the window, ice cold and pure.

A quiet and sophisticated getaway

  • 5 of 5

A friend and I enjoyed the A-frame experience with its running brook, surprising amenities, wood-burning stove, eclectic and excellent library, and baby grand. We will be back. Excellent hiking is very close, as well as the culinary delights of Grand Marais. Perfect for a small group of friends.

Secluded getaway....perfect escape!

  • 5 of 5

Long overdue review for this property...my parents and I stayed at this beautiful a-frame last memorial weekend and we couldn't have asked for more. For four of us, this was a perfect stay. Perfectly quiet, just far enough out of town to be secluded and feel like you're in the wilderness but close enough to Grand Marais to go in for dinner for a night. The accommodations were great, the cabin is beautiful and rustic but comfortable. And the music collection is amazing...along with the books. And, if you play piano, you're in luck! We saw mink (I think that's what it was!) every morning, running along the river. I would highly recommend this cabin! Oh, and our two small dogs were allowed with us, which was a plus.

Best cabin ever!

  • 5 of 5

I would recommend this interesting A-frame to anyone who wants a quiet and secluded get away. We had 4 in our group; me and my husband who took the one bedroom and two female friends. One slept up the spiral staircase in the loft and the other on the futon in the living room. We were all comfortable and the wood burning stove kept the place warm and cozy. The kitchen was well equipped which was much appreciated since we cooked most of our meals. Great books, music CDs and videos also!

Beautiful family get away

  • 4 of 5

Grand Marais is my family's favorite get away spot. We spent a week in this cabin and it was very secluded, well appointed and close to town! While its not on one of the many lakes in the area the creek running through the back yard provides a relaxing back drop to the cabin. The kids were able to learn some independent canoe skills in the safety of the yard. Elbow lake was a fantastic place to canoe as a family and its just down the road. The hikes, scenery, wildlife, weather, everything was perfect! We would definitely return to this cabin again.

Inspirational Space on an Amazing Property!

  • 5 of 5

Four of us stayed three nights in this beautiful location for a writing retreat. We had plenty of space for people to cook, rehearse, and write music (all at once)! Upon the first few hours of arriving, we cranked out a whole song! As I stated earlier, very inspirational! That night we built a bon fire and were able to look up to a bright night sky! On day two we continued writing (another new song!), went canoeing briefly, and stopped into town to check out the stores and the shore! Day three was exciting because we recorded a few videos of us performing with the beautiful scenery behind us...and of course, wrote another new song! Day four was very relaxing and involved many sad goodbyes to such a fantastic home!

This location contains beautiful scenery, the perfect amount of space, wonderful architecture, a relaxed yet VERY productive environment, and many great memories! We would all highly recommend this location to anyone considering to rent. The owners are more than fantastic and very easy to communicate west!

Best,

The Riverside Coalition

Stretching the truth...not for us.

  • 1 of 5

This cabin has charm and quaintness. You can tell it has family history and the owners obviously enjoy it and have made memories here. As renters with no history here we felt intentionaly mislead by the VRBO discription. This cabin is described as a 4 bedroom cabin. It really has 1 bedroom, a loft, and a" third bedroom" that is the room depicted in the photos as the library with the piano. It has a futon (not pictured) with no arms and is very uncomfortable to sit on or sleep on. It does have a fabric curtain you can pull acoss the opening from the dining area but it is a bit of a stretch to call it a bedroom. The 4th bedroom is nonexistent...not there, yeah WOW. There is a dinning table that could seat 6 if you pull it out from the wall, but it has 2 chairs! It is comical to claim seating for 8 in the discription, again s-t-r-e-t-c-h-i-n-g it. Why? The discription also features the recliner as good place to read.. that is true, enjoy it, it is the ONLY comfortable place to sit. The couch in the living/dinning area has been well used, you sink in! We rented for a week and left on day 4, literally sore from no sleep and poor seating. There is no A/C, we did find a small fan, and a ceiling fan, it was still very warm an muggy. We could not use the 1/2 bath because it had water that leaked from the toliet after using it, the railing on the deck has spindles that are loose and push away at the top. It is ashamed, this could be a fun place with a honest owner, some maintenance, and about 2 weeks of rental money invested in seating. We are not picky people, my husband was in the military for 20 years, we have stayed in many places. We have NEVER complained about a rental before, this is a first. We did address some of the concerns with the owner as far as seating, toliets and maintenance. We think he should offer at least a partical refund, he said" they were trying to resolve a couple of the things we mentioned, but however they do not provide refunds for personal perferences and expectations of their property". He takes no responsibility for the poor conditions or for expectations...really! Run Baby Run

Owner's Response: I think a review this exhaustive speaks for itself. Given that our cabin is not a motel room, we maintain a clean, functional and certainly comfortable place, similar to other Northern Minnesota getaways. We do have the four sleeping situations, and tried to represent that with naming them bedrooms. That we changed, although nobody has ever complained about this or that they were uncomfortable. We have plenty of reviews, all of which are overwhelmingly positive, they are just not on VRBO. When you stay at the cabin, you will see our guestbook with all four years of comments and appreciations. Almost every single guest talks in detail about they're fun stay with us. Given all this, the odd thing is that this guest didn't ask for a refund per se, but wanted to come back to the cabin for 5 days, free, in August! That pretty much takes the cake.

Grand Marais has become a well-traveled art & music village with several very decent restaurants. There is such a diversity of things to do now.A couple of miles out county #8 you run into Devil Track Lake which is quite large and has a resort, lots of good fishing and also swimming at the public boat ramp.
