That's the description of Buttonwood Hammock written in the house guest book recently. The house sits above the trees, a peaceful, private oasis on the tranquil north end of Elbow Cay, just one mile north of the quaint settlement of Hope Town. The spectacular ocean beach is just across the sand road, and the Sea of Abaco's pristine gentle beach is nearby as well. From the widow's walk atop the house, a 360 degree water panorama awaits; star gazing at night is breathtaking.
Perched on stilts, this beautiful 3BR/2Bath home has commanding views of the island and the sea surrounding it. High ceilings lend spaciousness to the living room, dining room and fully-equipped kitchen. The wrap-around deck is perfect for al fresco dining, and birdwatchers will be enthralled, especially with the hummingbirds visiting the feeder.
The master bedroom has a queen bed an attached bath, featuring a tub with shower. Twin beds grace the 2nd downstairs bedroom, next to the 2nd bathroom. The loft, comfortable for children or a 3rd couple, has a queen bed.
If you love deserted beaches, the sound of the ocean lulling you to sleep, spectacular snorkeling and diving, boating to other islands in the clear aquamarine Sea of Abaco, abd generally un-plugging from the world, this is for you!
The owners, full-time residents of Hope Town, are always available to be of assistance.
We sailed into Hope Town harbour in 1995, and instantly fell in love with it! We built the house in '96 and moved to Hope Town to run a sailboat charter company. We retired from that in 2007, and are permanent residents of Abaco -- this is our home, and we love living here!
Chris and Jill Prewitt purchased this house in 1996
Having fallen in love with Hope Town, we bought the lot on the beautiful, quiet north end of Elbow Cay.
We designed the house as an open, airy beach house, with spectacular views of the surroundings. We love to have all the windows and the French doors open to the outside....though there is always the chance that a bird will join us! -- opening the hatch to the widow's walk is the quickest way to provide him with an exit. The deck is the perfect spot for eating, reading and just enjoying nature. We have welcomed renters to the house since we built it, and they all comment that they love the peace, quiet and beauty of the spot, especially after a busy day out on the water.
Our stay at Bottonwood Hammock could not have been more special. From the moment we arrived greeted by Jill and Chris at the dock to our departure knowing that we had found such a special place that would call us back to return. Everything you need to enjoy your stay Jill and Chris have supplied or will help you coordinate to make things easy. Fom the very first step of booking their home, Jill goes above and beyond to make sure you understand how to get there, how to book a cart or boat, she even contacted our airline to make sure our early departure would work with the ferry times. They welcomed us into their home like we were visiting family. We were ao capitivated by the peacefulness of the North End of the island and the house is perfectly situated between the
Atlantic and the Abaco sea, only a few minute short walk to both, and both equally postcard perfect. The house is beautifully decorated and has everything you need. We fell asleep each night to the wonderful sea breezes and the lulling sounds of the crashing waves. With our family of 5, there was plenty of room for everyone. We loved this island and because of Jill and Chris's exceptional hospitality it made our trip more special than we could have imagined.
Jill and Chris' house was a fabulous relaxing beginning to our sailing trip in the Abaco. Perfect size for 2 couples. Very quiet location.
And they were both amazing arranging our late night ferry charter from Marsh Harbour on arrival.
Having the bicycles made it easy to tour the island.
An idyllic slice of paradise indeed !!
The house is located on a great spot in the North End of the island. The charming road that leads from the dock to the house gives you already an instant holiday feeling.
Stunning beaches of the Atlantic and Abaco Sea (great sunsets) are a short walk from the house.
Everything you need is in the house. It was spotless, enough towels, fully equipped kitchen, the Wi-Fi works great.
We had a lot of pleasure using the bikes, which is a perfect way to explore the island, which is just beautiful. No resorts, colourful painted wooden houses; it is breath-taking everywhere you look.
We also enjoyed just relaxing on the deck very much. It was nice to be high up between the trees and watch the little birds. Very calm and peaceful.
Jill and Chris were an amazing help with everything we needed to know about the house, the island, boat renting, groceries shopping, restaurants,…. Incredible thoughtful of them to arrange a pick-up in Marsh Harbour by boat late in the evening when we arrived and they were there to pick us up at the dock and bring us to the house. Also for our return home they arranged that the ferry made a detour and could pick us up at North End dock which was very convenient. Thank you again for everything !
We would strongly, strongly recommend this holiday rental and hope we will visit again.
Stayed 1 week in June 2016, had a great time. House is very close to both beaches and has everything needed. Kitchen is very nice and house has Wi-fi and towels, etc.. House was very clean and has bikes to ride into town for dinner. We love the Abacos and the blue water. Dock is a short walk from the house. Great location on North end of Elbow Cay.
Buttonwood Hammock was the perfect getaway for us. We loved the comfort of the home and the feel of the North End of the island. Many thanks to Jill and Chris for their hospitality and flexibility, as we hit a couple of bumps in our planning. We would definitely recommend this rental to other vacationers!
Buttonwood Hammock was a delight! Had all the creature comforts one could ask for (Central air-not needed, internet, ice maker, excellent water pressure, ceiling fans, TV-we did not even think to turn it on) No comparison to other houses we have stayed in Hope Town. They thought of everything to make us feel at home and was easily reached by VHF radio if needed.
This was the first time staying on the Northside of the island and it was super quiet, bug free (the house is above the tree line) and Buttonwood Hammock had plenty of natural light inside and the most amazing sea breezes. The ocean waves will literally lull you to sleep. Kitchen was fully equipped. We cooked 3 nights with ease.
We decided not to rent a golf cart and instead use Jill and Chris's bikes. Each bike had a large basket and we were able to use these for our transportation into town which was about 1 mile or less or 20 mins by foot. One of the several beaches were just around the corner from the house too.
We rented a boat from Harold, CatsPawsRentals in Hope Town to explore other islands. His boats were as advertised/reliable and the transaction was a breeze. You have to rent a boat from him if you decide. Harold & his team were fantastic.
Every morning (8:15am) we listened to the Cruisersnet on the VHF 68 at the house to get the marine forecast and hear the specials from some of the restaurants in town. What a great information outlet.
We absolutely endorse ButtonWood Hammock and Jill and Chris for their warm hospitality.
