About the property

Historic District - RETRO-LICIOUS SUNSHINE STATE DECOR - Stunning 1920s Bungalow!

This stunning, fully renovated and updated 1920s classic bungalow - The Conch Bungalow - captures the allure of the Sunshine State with bold, bright colors and pre-Disney roadside “kitsch” and souvenirs throughout. Upscale, modern furnishings are mixed with vintage tropical pieces, creating a comfortable retreat that your group will remember fondly, as much as you will the City’s many historic sites. Authenticity abounds at this relaxing home, with 1940s satin Florida souvenir pillow cases, old wooden fruit crates, oars and water skis on the walls, and amazing curio cabinets filled with vintage memorabilia, all perfectly blended with tropical rattan and bamboo furnishings, upholstered in cheerful patterns of retro-style bark cloth fabrics.

Leave your car behind while staying at this prime vacation location! There’s plenty of parking for two vehicles, leaving you more time for exploring and no wasted minutes (or money!) searching for an inconvenient parking space. Aside from day trips to the nearby beaches just over the famous Bridge of Lions, almost all our Guests NEVER use their car once parked at the house!

Situated on a quiet street and surrounded by houses built between 1860 and the 1930s, The Conch Bungalow is located just off San Marco Avenue, the main boutique/ restaurant street, with eclectic shops just a block away from the house’s front door! The house is only a few minutes’ stroll to the City's many downtown destinations: the famous Castillo de San Marco Fort, the Mission Nombre De Dios, Ripley’s-Believe-It-Or-Not, the Old Jail, Fountain of Youth, Lightner Museum, Flagler College, and other popular sites, plus many restaurants and small “locally owned” shops.

Fully equipped with amenities galore for your comfort and privacy, the house can accommodate to a MAXIMUM group of six (adults or children combined), with three private bedrooms (two queen and one full – with Cool Gel/Foam Technology Serta Hybrid mattresses) all decorated in a vintage “Floridiana” style; bathroom with extra-deep soak tub/shower, double sinks, and handicap bars throughout; a big, beach boardwalk-like outdoor hot/cold shower; and an 8-foot-high privacy fence surrounding the yard. With a spacious living room, dining room, and den, your group will have ample areas to spread out indoors, or enjoy a cocktail hour out back on the rear deck, sheltered from the sun or rain by a large pergola, and equipped with a propane-charcoal grill. The classic bungalow front porch is a peaceful place for morning coffee or an afternoon book. Spend an evening at “home” enjoying the many books on old Florida, or watching our house copy of John Sayles' Florida flick “Sunshine State.”

Preservation was a top priority when restoring the house to the original character of the 1920s and Guests will notice top-of-the-line architectural details, including bungalow window moldings and tinted glass door handles, creating a look that exudes old Florida charm, while offering modern conveniences. Important amenities include a touch-screen computer, Wi-Fi, DVD, CD stereo, two flat screen televisions, Samsung washer/dryer, stainless appliances, thick bath and beach towels, comfortable linens, a fully equipped kitchen, AND a fragrance (animal-pet-smoke) free environment. Breathe comfortably - all linens and towels are washed in fragrance-free detergents, and no harsh chemicals are used when cleaning our home. Absolutely no animals are permitted on the property (aside from the occasional Blue Jay or squirrel who might play in the yard), making it a comfortable environment for Guests with allergies to dogs, cats or other critters. A note about our beds: Guests rave about their comfort - telling us amusing stories about copying down the manufacturer label so they can research for their own home. And, our pillows are just as great!

Picture-perfect, private and comfortable, The Conch Bungalow is situated within the historic district, for a quick walk to the City’s most popular sites, and just a few minutes’ drive to St. Augustine or Vilano beach. The Conch Bungalow is a unique complement to your St. Augustine vacation. You are invited to experience the BEST in authentic Florida décor and ambiance that the Old City offers!

The Conch Bungalow was awarded the Certificate of Improvement for revitalization by the City of St. Augustine's City Commission and Mayor. The Mayor’s letter accompanying the Certificate states “The efforts you have made during the course of the restoration and renovation of the property have definitely made a positive contribution to the Uptown Neighborhood and to St. Augustine. We appreciate your investment of time, money and talent.”

Please Note: We have an excellent record of positive reviews. Prospective Guests should be aware that when reviewing a property on VRBO/HomeAway, an offhand comment or anything less than 5-star rating can affect a Home Owner's placement in listings for many months to come, and result in fewer bookings for the Home Owner. For those who depend on the income from VRBO/HomeAway, a less than 5-star stellar review, or off-hand critical comments, can be devastating. Just as a prospective Guest may carefully review a property's Reviews, so too may a Home Owner carefully evaluate a prospective Guest's reviews that that Guest may have left for other places they may have stayed. And, just as a prospective Guest will look at reviews prior to deciding on a property to book, so too will a Home Owner look at the prospective Guest's prior reviews of properties, in order to determine if the Guest is reasonable and fair, or if they are instead the type of person who enjoys exhibiting an elitist attitude filled with criticisms and condescending remarks. In our home, our attitude is: Do onto others as you would have them do onto you. If we cannot give someone who has been a Guest in our home a perfect rating of 5-stars across the board, then we do not provide a Review, thus not harming them, and not making ourselves look like nit-picky jerks.

About Annette & Stephen

We’re a “coastal family,” raised on the East Coast, although our military travels took us around the world (including to Hawaii for several tours). Upon retirement from military life, we settled in Florida, embarking on second careers and raising our family.

When we purchased The Conch Bungalow, our friends thought we were a little bit bonkers to take on the daunting task of a full restoration, so forlorn was the poor house when we first saw it. But with an eye for retro-design, and employing one of St. Augustine's finest general contractors specializing in historic home restoration, we were able to retain the home’s original 1920s charm and restore those accents that had been destroyed over time, as well as create the look and style of an “old Florida” home with a retro-modern, Florida twist. The end result is The Conch Bungalow!

As the promoters of the Floridiana Festival & Highwaymen Artist Show, we have an understanding of Florida’s rich cultural and tourism legacies, and strive to provide the discriminating traveler with an authentic “Old Florida” experience at the house. Many of our Guests have remarked that a stay at The Conch Bungalow is like a journey through Florida’s past!

Now a comfortable vacation spot for ourselves, we are delighted to share The Conch Bungalow with travelers appreciative of upscale decor and lodging, and St. Augustine’s rich history. We also offer another “themed” weekly vacation property – The Hula House - in the beach community of Lewes, Delaware (the first City, in the first State), an early 1900s Victorian-era home decorated entirely in vintage Hawaiiana.

Annette & Stephen purchased this house in 2013

Why Annette & Stephen chose Saint Augustine

Staying at The Conch Bungalow - with its vintage décor and focus on “old Florida - is a wonderful complement to a visit to the Oldest City in the U.S.. And, the home’s location couldn’t be more ideal, with all of the town’s famous attractions just a short stroll away! Conveniently located smack in the historic district, you can walk within a few minutes to any of the town’s famous sites, and enjoy EVERYTHING the old City has to offer. Your days will start off smoothly; avoid the headaches of meters and just leave your cars in The Conch Bungalow’s private driveway!

Named by us, The Conch Bungalow was built in the early 1920s and passed through the same family from one generation to the next, until our purchase. The house had been constructed using coquina shell for the exterior (a form of stucco, heavy with seashells of varying sizes) and Guests can see much of the original exterior on the east and west sides, and front of the house. While the house had remained essentially unchanged until our purchase, unfortunately years of neglect after the passing of the family matriarch had left it in a downtrodden condition. Although its’ appearance both inside and out might have been off-putting to some, we’re very attuned to historic preservation and saw a beautiful coquina shell home that begged 'SAVE ME'! A new project! Our hearts and attentions turned to this waif of a home that had a 'For Sale by Owner' sign in the front yard. So badly injured was its structure, with a sagging roof, bathroom walls that had collapsed, plaster ceilings bowing down, floors completely destroyed from termites, that one general contractor proclaimed to us upon first seeing it - 'I can build you a new house' - suggesting that it was best to just buy the land and tear the home down. Instead, we found the City's best General Contractor, with a crew of skilled craftsmen, and embarked on an extensive renovation.

What makes this house unique

The house is an easy stroll from EVERYTHING that you’ll want to see in downtown historic St. Augustine (and a very short drive to the beaches on the Atlantic Ocean, just over the historic Bridge of Lions)! With our private paved driveway, Guests can park their car for their entire stay without any worries. WALK to everything - the Old Jail, Castillo de San Marco National Monument, Fountain of Youth, Ripley's Believe-It-Or-Not Odditorium, the Lightner Museum, fantastic dining and shopping the old town, and much more! From the moment you head down the street into town, you'll be charmed by the warmth of the neighborhood, and will enjoy browsing the many small shops that line San Marco Avenue.

We are considerate of Guests who may have allergies. No cigar or pipe smoking is permitted on premises; cigarette smoking may be done outside. Linens and towels are washed in a fragrance free detergent. In order to make the house comfortable for those with allergies - as well as adhere to our insurance policy guidelines - absolutely no animals or pets of any type are allowed on the property.

A small welcome gift awaits you upon check-in!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Well, we have had a wonderful time. This bungalow has everything - the little details and lovely decorations made it very "homey." The sun, surf and relaxation was just what we needed.

The hostess, Annette, made sure we were completely taken care of. I will definitely recommend a stay here. Goodbye to the sunny state - until we meet again. God Bless.

The Conch Bungalow complements your visit to historic St. Augustine - each piece of art, furniture and memorabilia in the home was chosen to accent our comfortable “Old Florida” theme. Vintage art varies from room to room – from 1950s tropical serigraphs to hand-tinted Florida photos of the 1930s by famed photographer William Harris. Books include fiction and non-fiction tales of the South, the City’s ghosts, Southern cooking, Florida kitsch collecting, and more. We provide a house copy of “Sunshine State,” an American epic examining the destruction of small town life in the fictional Delrona Beach and the commercial over-development of Florida. Finally, curio cabinets are filled with fun vintage souvenirs, and introduce visitors to early Florida sites and cities, and the state’s tropical roadside attraction heritage, from dressed up Caymen alligators to 1920s carnival bathing beauties, each one contributing to an appreciation for Florida’s past!

A sweet slice of old Florida

  • 5 of 5

I had never experienced St Augustine before and was passing through with my two best friends to "feel it out" for possible move back to the mainland from Hawaii. My friends arrived first so my first impression of the cottage was via a text from them stating "this place is adorable!" The entire 3 nights we were there we kept remarking how amazing we had scored such a great place. The cottage is a roomy bungalow with huge bedrooms and beautiful upholstery. Living room furniture made me think I was back in Hawaii. Kitchen is small but well appointed and very functional. Although we didn't have a chance to use it (temps were a little chilly while we were there), there is a spacious outdoor dining space on the deck in the backyard. Backyard also has a sweet outdoor shower (again, little chilly to use at the time). The house is also located in a safe and very quiet neighborhood. Although a McDonalds is located nearby, it didn't diminish our love of the place. A block away is great and antiques, and only a mile from there... the rest of the downtown fun. We pretty much walked to everything the entire time, (racking up 4-5 miles each day). We had a delicious lunch at O.C's and dinner at Harry's. My fave place of all was The Blue Hen on MLK ave in Lincolnville. There was a wait, but well worth it. Service was stupendous at all restaurants and bars we visited. I highly recommend the Conch Bungalow! Annette was the perfect host and our visit couldn't have been more enjoyable.

Great house; perfect location; very responsive host

  • 5 of 5

The house is dynamite! Four of us stayed very comfortably in the three bedrooms. All of the rooms are nicely appointed. The kitchen is well equipped with plenty of place settings—you don’t have to run the dishwasher after each meal. The covered back porch has very comfortable chairs and a table for outside dining. A lot of thought went into furnishing this home—it does not feel like a rental. You feel like you are visiting someone’s very nice home. Annette responded immediately to our communications from the very first contact about the house.
