About Gale and Michele Notestone

Hana By The Bay is Gale and Michele Notestone. We both live and work in Hana. Michele is a paramedic and Gale is Hana's Resident Fire Captain. They have both lived in Hana over 10 years and will live no other place. We are very thankful to live here and wish to share the beauty with others.

Gale and Michele Notestone purchased this cottage in 2006

Why Gale and Michele Notestone chose Hāna

Hana is has the true feeling of a small town community. It is a wonderful feeling to go to the stores, the post office, the bank, the gas station, etc. and you know everybody by name, and they know you. As secluded as Hana is, the community relies on one another for assistance. One of the true meanings of Aloha is 'to give.' When you do, time

and time again, the return is often abundant. It warms your heart.

What makes this cottage unique

Air conditioning in the bedroom. There are countless benefits. Additional to what was described above, Hana looks to the East. There is nothing upwind of you but the beautiful blue Pacific. The air is very clean, clear and fresh. Hawaii's trade winds split at the point of Hana, Kauiki Head. From the front of your cottage, you will see the lighthouse there, blinking at you throughout the night.

Another great thing about Hana is you can see the sun and the moon rise from the oceans horizon. This is spectacular.

Staying in Hana when there is more than half a moon is a wondrous time to visit. Full moon is best. If you don't catch the moon, the stars will 'fill the bill'. Because Hana has very little 'city lights', the stars are easily seen. The North Star and Big Dipper await your visit.

Great property. Lovely town.

  • 5 of 5

This place was beautiful. Very well kept and clean. Had everything we needed and more. Gale came over the first night to greet us (with fresh-made banana bread) and make sure all of our questions were answered. The bed was incredibly comfortable and the amenities were beyond what we were expecting. Recommend this place 100%!

The best VRBO experience ever!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Michelle's cottage in Hana for our 5th anniversary and we absolutely loved our time spent there. The property has a great view of the Hana Bay! It is beautiful, clean, well-decorated, in a quiet community, what more can I ask for! Michelle also greeted us with freshly home baked Chocolate chip Banana bread on our arrival and locally harvested fruits the next day. Thanks Michelle, we'll definitely stay at your property again on our next visit to Hana. Mahalo.

Perfect for our Honeymoon!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Hana by the Bay Cottage for 3 of our 8 nights in Maui and our stay in Hana was definitely the highlight of our trip! Michele and Gale were excellent hosts and the homemade banana bread was delicious! Michele greeted us and made sure we had everything we needed and gave us tips on where and when to go places. They also have very helpful maps and information on places to go on the south side of the island in the cottage. The cottage was beautiful with high end finishes and bath products. We used the beach chairs and they also provided surf and boogie boards as well as other fun things to take with to the beach.

If you're worried about being too secluded or not having enough to do in Hana, don't be! You can walk to Red Sand beach, hike up to Fagan's Cross, and its a short drive to many other beautiful sites. The most beautiful sites we saw on Maui were during our time in Hana!! There are only 2 restaurants but there are several food trucks and a couple of small grocery stores so we had no trouble finding our meals. We also enjoyed grilling on the patio. It is peaceful, beautiful, and so much less crowed than other parts of the island! We had both Red Sand Beach and Black Sand Beach to ourselves since we went in the morning instead of the end of the day when most people stop there after doing the Road to Hana.

Hana by the Bay

  • 5 of 5

Michelle's home was our absolute favorite thing about Hana! What a lovely place to relax. We had access to her paddleboard, washer dryer, and even had a hose to rinse off sand outside. The home is much bigger than expected - roomy and has everything you'd need for a weekend. Loved the small details (soaps, shower gels, spices, etc). Location is wonderful - easy to walk to Hana Bay, and close to a few food trucks in town. Perfect stop if you're wanting to explore Hana for more than the 1-day road trip! The homemade banana bread was a treat! Thanks, Michelle - we will definitely return!

Immaculate cottage in Hana!

  • 5 of 5

Hana by the Bay provided the most peaceful, relaxing and delightful place for us to spend the final few days of our vacation. We really appreciate how much care and attention to detail Michele and Gale have put into this cottage - they know how to make their guests feel welcomed and comfortable. The cottage has everything you could need for cooking (we recommend you stock up on groceries before driving to Hana), and was spotlessly clean. The bed is super comfortable. We enjoyed sitting on the lanai in the late afternoons listening to the ocean. We only wish we had been able to stay longer!
