New Custom Mountain Lake House with the Best Views
This is a complete gut renovation and addition to a small family cottage that has been in the family for more than 40 years. The "re-imagining" of the house took a small one level 1800sf 3-bedroom house to a brand new 3500sf 5 bedroom home on Lake Santeetlah, NC. All of the main bedrooms have views of and access to the lake. A large double height "great room" provides a grand common space with incredible views for cooking and eating while also still providing smaller cozy spaces for privacy including an amazing loft. And large decks on every level provide plenty of outdoor space for enjoying the amazing views and outdoor living. It also includes a private dock on quiet island/peninsula with only 6 houses. Perfect for families or groups of adults. ***PLEASE NOTE: the existing reviews before 2024 are before the complete "to the studs" renovation and addition.****
Lake Santeetlah has 76 miles of coastline, but only about 2 miles are developed - the rest is surrounded by a National Forest. Very Quiet and peaceful. Great for families, watersports, fishing, boating. Awesome hiking, kayaking, camping and outdoor sports nearby. Fishing includes smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, walleye, crappie, bream, and lake trout.
There are over 200 miles of hiking trails in the area, and one can hike eight miles from Lake Santeetlah to the Appalachian Trail.
The nearby Cheoah River is noted for its Class IV and V whitewater rapids.
Lake Santeetlah adjoins a portion of U.S. 129 called the Tail of the Dragon, a road frequently used for recreational purposes by motorcycle and sports car enthusiasts because of its purported 318 curves in 11 miles.
Lake has boat rentals available.

A lovely rental with excellent views of the lake and mountains. Owners were kind and very responsive to any questions or issues we had. Will definitely be back.
The lake house is newly built and well furnished . Lovely location with multiple beautiful views of the lake from different location's throughout the house. .

Wonderful vacation!
We have stayed at the Han house for several years in a row. The house is always comfortable and very clean. Our favorite times are sitting on the deck and boat dock enjoying the amazing view. We even had a meteor shower one night!

Thanks so much! We love sitting down by the lake also. All the best!
This property has incredible views of the lake from both inside the house and from the decks. Waking up to those views, enjoying sunset, amd stargazing at night were a highlight of the trip. Having a dock and various watercraft was super fun too - we had the paddleboards out every day. The kitchen is fully equipped for large meals, as is the propane grill. We also enjoyed making smores with the firepit. The neighborhood was nice and generally quiet, and very family-friendly. We had a few issues with finding bugs in the house but that's to be expected, being on a lake. Would recommend this property to others and stay again if we vacation in this area in the future!

Perfect week! Had everything we needed and more. Kitchen well stocked. Extra water toys and life jackets. Not a fancy place but perfect to relax and unwind. The views from the deck and house are unbelievable and the water is crystal clear!

Thanks so much Christina. Glad you enjoyed your time!
We would like to thank you for sharing your beautiful Million Dollar views and including your new home with the deal.
Leaving it was the hardest part.
The dock worked out perfect for our jet ski’s and boat rental,. Thanks again
Wonderful place, perfect house. As soon as you walk in you’re blown away with the amazing views of Lake Santeetlah. Wonderful location for beautiful drives through the mountains and more hiking nearby than you could possibly fit into one week. I recommend a trip to see the three nearby dams (Santeetlah, Cheoha, and Fontana).
The house was very clean, very comfortable beds, everything you need and much more. Kitchen was very well appointed. No issues, no complaints, responsive hosts. We look forward to coming back to stay again.
The Han House home was beautifully decorated, very well stocked and very clean. The views of the Lake from every room were beautiful. Our family of 9 had a great week at this Lake house. We have rented on Lake Santeetlah every summer for over 15 years. This house is by far the best rental we have stayed in on Lake Santeetlah. We appreciate the cleanliness and fully stocked kitchen as no other house on the Lake we have rented comes close to house. We will be repeat renters.

Absolutely beautiful location. Beautiful house. Disappointed because check in was 2 hours late. Apparently, folks before us left quite a mess. Some of the linens needed to be washed. No paper towels. No shampoo, etc. in some of the bathrooms. The tub on main floor was clogged. Note: the umbrella outside had a tear.

peaceful quiet lakefront retreat
This is remote with gorgeous views across lake Santeetlah with national forest surrounding it. Robinsville is about 15 minutes away if you forgot something but we enjoyed most the day we stayed at the house listening to the quiet, floating in the river on a raft then a canoe. There are fish but they are smart. My husband thoroughly enjoyed the day of fishing but did not bring home our dinner from his efforts. The kitchen is fully stocked, beds comfortable and showers fully functional. Wifi worked so I could do a little work as needed. Overall it was a much needed break for our 25th anniversary.

Fantastic View but too many unwelcome guests!
Beautiful piece of property with a million dollar view. Older house with a nice dock and plenty of parking. Furnishings are outdated so don't expect a fancy resort. We only used the master bedroom ourselves but did have some friends stay in the other queen for one night. The consensus was that the bedding in both rooms was worn and not very comfortable. Our biggest problem, however, was the ever present ant population. Despite our attempts to keep kitchen extremely clean, we awoke most mornings to find plenty of small ants on kitchen cabinets and in sink. In addition, large red ants invaded the master bath area and to a lesser extent, the master bedroom. We sprayed ant killer spray each night before retiring and collected the dead ants each morning. House definitely needs the services of a professional pest control company.

Thank you for your feedback, and our most sincere apologies about the uninvited guests. How rude of them!
Just to let you know, we engaged a professional firm in August to get rid of the unwelcome guests, and it has worked great. We also replaced the queen bed with a brand new bed/mattress set and repaired the twin beds as well.
Thanks again for your feedback and we hope you consider the Han house next year!
All the best.

The check in process was seamless. The lockbox worked as described. The home was spotlessly clean. The beds were comfortable and the linens were very nice. The kitchen was very well stocked with not only dishes, serving wear, pots and pan, but also spices and oils and vinegar. But the view is the reason we came and we were not disappointed. It is fabulous. We thoroughly enjoyed the dock and the lake. We even rented a pontoon boat for a couple days. We want to come back again!!!!
Our group of six adults had a relaxing week at the Han Cottage. It lives up to the claim of “Best Location On Lake”! The cottage is comfortable for lounging during T-storms with a kitchen set up for group cooking. The deck is the place to hang for morning coffee and meals. The swim dock almost reigns supreme, second only to being in the lake. We recommend bringing camp chairs for the dock. Swim noodles and stand-up paddle boards for the water. Other activities were morning walks or runs. Road cycling including Cherohala Skyway and Maple Springs. Found some nice swimming holes in river, too. Russell, the owner, was accommodating and rental navigation was with ease.
We had a great stay. The setting of the house is gorgeous - felt very private when in the house and on the deck. Sitting on the deck, you can really only see a bit of the house next door. Otherwise you are staring out at the quiet lake and the undeveloped shore on the other side. There were a couple of times we could hear music coming from neighbors, but it wasn't late at night so not a big deal. The house itself is as described - "old-school-cottage" in terms of furnishings but comfortable and spacious. I had a bit of trouble reaching Russell but it was never urgent so not that big of a deal. One tip - write down or print out the directions because your GPS probably won't take you to the address provided and you might not have cell service as you approach the lake.
The neighborhood and lake access is wonderful. Kitchen well supplied with plenty of cookware. Furnishings are old and mixed mash, handles come off dressers, and carpet needs thorough cleaning. Plenty of towels but shower curtain liners need replacing. Microwave started sparking and contacted owner but received no reply. Access to a dock was what made the trip. Great neighborhood for walking and felt very safe.

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed your stay. We have replaced the microwave and the shower curtain liners, and will be doing a full renovation this fall, hopefully available for next summer!
Nice property with a beautiful view, perhaps a little dated. We enjoyed our stay however there were a few small issues, one being that there was not a automatic drip coffee maker available as listed, only a Keurig with a missing cover for the water tank. Had we of known we would have bought a coffee maker prior to check-in as we stopped at Ingles on the way. My husband had to go back first thing in the morning to buy a coffee maker. That being said, we enjoyed the property and even saw an otter down by the dock.
This is a great getaway location. House is fully equipped and comfortable. Views of the lake are perfect. Very peaceful.
We definitely want to come back and Would highly recommend to others.

About the host
Hosted by Russell Culin
We bought this property more than 40 years ago when Lake Santeetlah was really nothing much more than a very sleepy man-made lake. I found this almost accidentally because as a small town doctor, I used to run a clinic in town once a month. There were only two houses on the island when the developer connected it to the mainland. And for the last forty years we have loved spending weekends and summers here first with just our small family and then watching our children and their friends enjoy the lake and all of its activities and now with our larger family and our grandchildren.
Why they chose this property
Have always loved how close the lake was and the views cannot be beat.
What makes this property unique
The original house was built in 1981, and it would be difficult to build a house this close to the water nowadays. And that view - the whole lake is beautiful and there are many wonderful spots around it - but our view, from the privacy of a little mini-cove created by the road connecting the island to the shore, it's hard to beat. That long vista to the mountains. And even though we are out on the lake, it still feels a little tucked away and private.
