About Teresa and Steve Magill

Teresa and Steve Magill 'retired' to France in 2005.

When we bought the property, the Stone Barn had already been converted into 4 Gites.

We spent our first winter redecorating, refurbishing, repainting and re furnishing and generally bringing them up to date.

We live here full time with our two sons, a pony and our two lovely friendly dogs, Frank and Betty (!) and two cats. We are both Londoners, real townies, and after 10 years, we still have to stop and listen to the silence.

Of course, we miss 'civilisation' but after two or three days in London, we long to get away from the traffic, the noise, the hustle and bustle and the grime and back to our clean air, our traffic free roads (no traffic lights for 20 kilometres!!!!) and our peace and quiet.

Running the gites was an eye-opener , although I am a qualified chef, we had no experience of this sort of enterprise and the business came ready made so we really hit the ground running. It took us a year or two to get into the swing of dealing with all that was involved, but I think we have got the hang of it now and we have several clients who come back time and time again so we must be doing something right.

We have met (and made friends with) a great many people from all over the world and this has been a hugely enriching experience.

Teresa and Steve Magill purchased this cottage in 2005

Why Teresa and Steve Magill chose Salviac

We had holidayed in Rural France on several occasions, and were really taken with this area. It's green and undulating and fresh and peaceful and clean....... I could go on and on.

When we made the decision to move to France, we probably looked at 30 properties. This old stone farmhouse seemed to fit the bill perfectly and although we did a lot of work to upgrade the gites and then more work on the house, it now works for the whole family and we feel it was worth it.

We are close to a village with an all year community, which was very important to us, as our boys both went to school in Salviac and the locals have made us very welcome. The area is not densely populated but at the same time, we are not completely cut off. The shops still close for lunch for two hours, which takes some getting used to but, hey, we now embrace this very French tradition and do you know what? We think they have got it about right!

What makes this cottage unique

Even in the winter, when the trees are covered in frost, we can wrap ourselves in fleeces and sit outside in the morning with our coffee and crosissants and take in the breathtaking view from our terrace. We may not be earning city salaries, but this is priceless.

Although the gites are usually let on a self catering basis, Teresa was happy to provide breakfast and evening meal for my group of motorcyclists - including shopping for our wine and beers! Steve got fresh bread from the village each morning, breakfast was served before a days ride in a stunning area of France. Each evening cold beers were waiting on our return. Teresa's evening meal set menu provided good quality food. Time off the bike was spent chilling by the pool or canoeing on the Dordoyne, or a leisurely stroll into Salviac. Gites were clean and comfortable with good self catering facilities. Thoroughly recommended.

An absolute delight and highly recommended

  • 5 of 5

When I first arrived, I was awestruck! The property itself is absolutely beautiful and far surpassed any expectation I had. The grounds themselves are extremely well kept with an abundance of space. For my children, there were excellent facilities, such as a football field, fenced swimming pool area and even an outdoor play structure, complete with swing.

The accommodation was extremely well maintained, clean, tidy and has everything one could ask for. Cooking facilities were more than ample, with the added bonus of a communal , rustic BBQ area. Basic amenities such as large supermarkets are all within a 5 minute drive, too, which kept us in plentiful supply of local wines and food.

As for our hosts; Extremely welcoming, friendly and made us feel at home for the entire week we were there. Nothing was too tall an ask and at the same time, that our privacy was invaded in any way. Quite often in this setting, one can feel a little pressed upon, though this couldn't be further from the reality. Such a lovely couple and we are already looking forward to our return next year.

The surrounding area - luscious countryside, rolling hills and some absolutely charming villages with quaint café's and restaurants, with our favourite being 'Damien's' which is located a few kilometres away in Salviac.

One major recommendation, should you feel the need to venture a little further, is canoeing on Le Lot. A great day out and an excellent way to see the natural splendour the region has to offer.

I couldn't recommend this place highly enough, whether for a family getaway, a romantic break or just a breath of fresh air from the hum-drum of daily life . I have already booked my return trip here for next year and shall be singing it's praises for a long time to come. An all round 5* experience.
