About Hector or Kim Melendez

Hector grew up in the center of the island (Orocovis) and moved to Michigan in the 70's. Each vacation opportunity, we would return to the island to stay with family. In 2001, we had an opportunity to purchase a piece of land close to a niece's house that we always ended up staying with on vacation because of her great location to everything (and her great Puerto Rican cooking!). When Hector retired in 2010, he returned to his homeland to supervise the construction of this vacation home.

Hector or Kim Melendez purchased this house in 2010

Why Hector or Kim Melendez chose Rio Grande

We chose this location because it is in close proximity to all the attractions and amenities of the big city of San Juan, the kid-friendly beach in Luquillo, and the ferries in Fajardo to neighboring islands Culebra and Vieques. We enjoy the privacy of the home and its surrounding tropical fruit, flowers, rocks, and palms. We are hybrid Tourists and Locals -- we want to see everything the island has to offer, but we don't want to pay the high costs associated with being a tourist, and we know THERE IS SO MUCH MORE TO THE ISLAND THAN SAN JUAN!

What makes this house unique

The location of this home allows you to vacation comfortably with all the amenities of home. It is close enough to San Juan for an easy road trip, very close to Luquillo Beach, one of the best beaches on the island, and very close to the El Yunque National Forest. Move in for your vacation ... the house allows you to just relax, cook meals if you want, and spend quality time together. Excellent restaurants are in close proximity and there is a book in the home with recommendations, but feel free to ask us too!

If you have questions about the property, location, or the island in general, please feel free to contact us by telephone, text, or email.

Guestbook comments from the owner

This house is surrounded by rain forest vegetation and beautiful landscaping, including banana and mango trees. It is on a gated private drive with no close neighbors to deal with, a little ways up a mountain. A comfortable home.

Notes:
This is a family vacation home. We welcome those seeking time with the family, to explore the beautiful island, or just relax in the secluded home. The house is private and the land surrounding it is available to explore. While we reside on the second floor, we completely respect guests' privacy. But we are available if an unexpected surprise occurs, and that provides many guests with a sense of security, just knowing we are nearby in case they need us.

Beautiful Retreat!!!

  • 5 of 5

I stayed at 2 houses while I was in Puerto Rico for my son's wedding. This was by far the nicer of the two. It is hard to tell from the picture how beautiful and private this home is. The landscaping is amazing. The house is very convenient to the entire northeast portion of the island. Unlike the other house we rented, it had all of the things you would need to stay there without you having to pack or buy a lot. Received damage deposit refund promptly after stay. I would recommend this house to anyone and I would definitely stay here again.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your input! We strive to make the experience of vacationing at La Lomita feel like your home away from home, so your energy is spent exploring the island, enjoying family and friends, and not missing the basics in your living space, or running to the store for them. It was great to have you and your darling family here. Come back any time!

Amazing Puerto Rican Mountain Retreat

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful family vacation staying at La Lomita!! Kim and Hector are wonderful hosts who go out of their way to make your stay as special as possible. Kim is quick to respond with advice on foods, activities and places only the locals know about. La Lomita has a beautiful tropical feel to it, with amazing landscaping and mountian views. Our first activity we did while here was take the short hike up the trail on the property to a mountian peak where we could see out for miles even to the ocean. My kids enjoyed seeing Dominoe (their dog) and the 4 stray cats that have made the mountain their home.

The location is perfect for day trips to San Juan, Luquillo, Fajardo, and Ponce. There are so many wonderful activies to choose from but our family (kids ages 11,13,15,18) chose to spend time together at the variety of different waterfalls and swimming holes. We visited El Yunque where we went to La Mina Falls and Angolito's trail.

La Mina falls, about a 30 minute hike, is very busy but has a nice view. Our kids are adventurous so we went directly below the falls to two smaller pools of water where the kids could jump off rocks and go under a small waterfall.

If you take the short 15 minute hike on Angelito's trail you will come to a nice pool of water with a small rope swing and the water is wonderfully refreshing after the short hike.

Las Paylas is a great local treasure with 2 natural waterslides and rocks for kids of all ages to jump off of into the refreshing mountain pools.

Kim took us to Charco El Hippie (about 50 minutes away) for our last day and we loved it there!! My kids wish we had gone every day! It has a very long (and about 20 feet up) rope swing that my 13 and 15 year old loved! Their are multiple rocks to jump off of into the mountain waters and a hike you can take to see the views from above the waterfalls. This was a great day!

We also took a quick trip to Escombron beach in San Juan for a great time of playing in the beautiful sand, swimming in the clear atlantic, snorkeling with the many colorful fish and trying out the new ocean activity that Kim introduced us to: Sea Glass hunting!!

All in all we had a wonderful adventure, made new friends in Kim and Hector and look forward to visiting their island escape again sometime soon!! I highly recommend La Lomita for families and couples looking for an island escape!!

Perfect Puerto Rico Vacation

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved our stay with Kim and Hector. They could not BE more welcoming and helpful, they are such wonderful people. The house was perfect for our family of five (three teenagers) and the setting is picturesque. Our girls loved their property with all of the gorgeous flowers and fresh bananas off the tree! So many things are provided that I could have packed lighter! They were quick to give suggestions on drives to take and restaurants to try when asked, and even texted us the map pins so we could navigate easily. Loved the beautiful sea glass art and jewelry that Kim does and so enjoyed looking for some of my own. We hope to be able to stay with them again someday!! I would highly recommend staying with them!!!

Truly the ideal location

  • 5 of 5

I do a lot of research for our vacations including reading reviews, having maps beside me to look for location relative to activities, learning about the various regions, etc. I love the planning part and spend a long time doing it. We are so glad we found La Lomita instead of staying at a resort as the kids each had their own bedroom and a separate bathroom, we could get our own meals (although, trust me. You're going to PR. Don't bother cooking. Just eat out at the fabulous restaurants). Kim had everything there. Toothpaste, shampoo, beach towels, beach chairs, a kitchen stocked with all that you need, a binder full of local Information, bug stray, suntan lotion, you name it! She was so helpful with answering my questions prior to arrival. The location is ideal for day trips to Luquillo beach, Fajardo, El Yunque, and a real retreat to return back to after those bustling areas. Beautiful views and landscaping. We appreciated Hector's delivery of mangoes and bananas outside our door! Beds were so comfortable. AC a welcome treat after the humidity of rain forest hikes. Our outdoor space felt private and we didn't hear our hosts at all inside or out, but nice knowing they were there for questions, restaurant recommendations and the like. Some of our excursions included: nature tour at las Cabazas, Luquillo beach, Biobay tour with Bioisland Excursions, rain forest hikes of La Mina and Mt. Britton, and a day long catamaran tour to Snorkel/Flamenco beach with East Island Excursions, all highly recommended. Restaurants included Don Pepe, El Pescador, The Patelillos Castle (x2!), Degree 18 Juice Bar, Ekelekua, Luquillo kiosks, and Heladeria Lares. And that doesn't include the places in Old San Juan! We really hope we can return again! So many places in the world to visit. But if we return to PR, this is where we will stay. Muchisimas gracias!
