About Jonathan Willick

My wife and our family are Canadians living in San Diego and we bought this little place to have somewhere to go with the family to get away from the city and experience a bit of winter fun like skiing and sledding. We love heading up to Big Bear whenever we have a free weekend, its a great place to visit year round and has a lot of beautiful scenery and things to do.

Jonathan Willick purchased this cabin in 2013

What makes this cabin unique

The place is an easy walk to Bear Mountain for anyone wanting to ski, you can go back and forth or go home for lunch and it is convenient with small children. There is also a lot of mountain biking in the area during the summer months. The deck has a great view of the trees and is a relaxing place to kick back and relax.

Clean and Cozy

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay here. The cabin was freshly cleaned and vacuumed when we arrived, and we appreciated that. We could tell the owners took pride in their rental. It was also great to be able to have our two small dogs stay with us on our long weekend. They loved the comfy sofa. We saw a few creepy-crawlies, but I suppose that is to be expected. The cabin is set low off the street, very quiet and private, with an amazing view from the back porch. Very cute property!

Cut short due to power failure

  • 4 of 5

A fire broke out during the 3rd day of our 7 day vacation. The Bear Valley Power Co. experienced a city wide power failure due to a fire in the Mtns North of the lake. We were told it could be 24 to 48 hrs until power was restored. Because of the heat wave hitting the valley we were not able to stay as we had a small animal that would also suffer from the heat. I called the owner and he responded within a few minutes to say he understood the reason we would not stay any longer at the cabin. Since then the owner has very graciously said he would refund half of the rent for the week. The few days we stayed in the cabin were very nice - all was as said it was on the website. The cabin was very comfortable, clean and very private.

Cozy Cabin was COZY....and QUIET too!!

  • 5 of 5

I picked this one out of the many I looked at online because it appeared to be set back in the trees, with no immediate neighbors. I was not disappointed! I wanted peace and quiet, and wanted to leave the city behind and feel like I was in the mountains. I brought my Mom here for her Mothers Day gift, and we fell in love with the place instantly. It was as good if not better than the photos, and our hopes were exceeded. The east neighbor house is currently vacant and for sale, and the west neighbor house was empty too. This yielded absolute quiet on the rear deck, where we ate breakfast both days before exploring the town and lake. The only thing you could hear was the breeze rushing through the pine trees, and Blue Jays chirping. Also, we printed out a map of the neighborhood streets, so we could take walks without getting lost. There is very good walking around this neighborhood, with lots of neat cabins to look at, and the streets are not too steep. Previous reviews mention the steep driveway, but it was not an issue when dry. It was not really that steep. My Mom is 82, and this place is very senior friendly being only one story, with no stairs except for the side deck entrance which we never had to use. This place is well maintained, quiet, charming, rustic but not too rustic. I would definitely rent it again. VRBO and the owner were top notch and very efficient. Thank you Cozy Cabin!!

Cozy Cabin is perfect for a quiet getaway for a couple

  • 4 of 5

My husband and I (over 55) enjoyed our stay at the cabin over four days. I cooked a lot and liked the gas stove and full size refrigerator. Only wished I had brought my own pan because all pans in the kitchen had a deteriorating finish that even with a lot of oil could not manage to fry eggs. No lids either, had to use a dish to cover pots. Lots of silverware, glasses and dishes and sharp knives (a real plus)

The heating system worked really well and it was quiet too. Liked the hot water; and clean, large towels. No soap in the shower/bathtub.

We liked the beds- very comfortable, perhaps memory foam. However, the blankets were super thin so if we didn't bring our own blankets we would have been cold at night. Also, we were asked to carry all trash to the city dumpster but the only bags provided were very small about 2 gallons. We had to buy large bags to consolidate all the little bags of trash otherwise they would make a mess between our luggage in the van. The area is super quiet off the large deck with zero traffic noise. It is definitely farther then two blocks to the slopes and not within a walking distance especially due to steep roads. The driveway to the property is very steep and narrow which requires two people to back out of it. We mainly stayed at the cabin because there were no trails nearby and filled our time with reading. Very good internet connection which we also used for phone calls via wifi. There was no AT&T service for about 2 miles around the cabin. TV reception is very good after you figure out how to use two different controls. Written instructions would have been helpful. The carpet is worn out and wavy in spots so could be a tripping hazard- time for replacement. Good ventilation, plenty windows, and all walls and ceilings finished in pine which makes it very authentic and cozy.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the great feedback Renee, we are happy you enjoyed your stay and really appreciate. We will have a look at getting some new pans and larger trash bags as soon as we can and I will add a note about the two remotes for the TV/cable box (one remote is for each). Also upgrading the carpet is one of our next projects as we continuously try to keep the place in good shape, we just got a new dining room set and painted the deck last summer. As far as walkable to the slopes goes, we specify it is walkable to the mountain and then you ski down to the challet at the bottom (we are located at a higher elevation than the ski challet, it would be a bit more of a walk to the actual challet if you couldn't ski down). In the winter we walk back and forth with our young children several times. According to google maps it is 0.2 miles. Also there is a nice wooded area with several hiking trails that branches off of it, it is located at the corner of Shasta and Ridgecrest, we walk there with our kids whenever we are up, its probably about a 10 or 15 minute walk. Its 0.5 miles away if you choose to walk. One thing to note when we first starting going up there is that the elevation really does affect you if you aren't used to it and every hill in the road feels like more work than it would at sea level.
