Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

3 bed rooms and two baths on Amberjack Creek. Beaches and ammenities nearby.

Our property was once part of the old 35,000 acre Vanderbilt cattle ranch on the Cape Haze peninsula. Some of Florida best beaches are nearby which probably originally brought the Vanderbilt family to the area.

Our lot is over ¾ of an acre in what is perhaps the least developed section of the Cape Haze community. It is well protected on two sides by wild natural Florida habitats. A third side is protected by a well-established landscape beds with palms and other plants that provide a screen. Our property runs along 240 feet of Amberjack Creek, a tidal inlet, which provides shallow-draft access to the Gulf of Mexico (boats which draw in excess of 16 inches are not recommended for the creek, however, there are inexpensive slip rentals within 4 minutes of the property at Gasparilla Pass for larger boats). The creek abounds with wildlife. Fish from the backyard or watch for the herons, ibis, sandhill cranes, manatees and the multitude of leaping and swimming mullets and other varieties of fish.

The house has 3 sets of large, double or triple sliding doors that open onto the lanai, and provide views of the creek and mangroves. Walk down to the creek and disappear for a while with a good book. While his home is equipped for privacy and relaxation, and is also within close walking distance of the local post office, grocery store, bank and pizza parlor.

As members of the Cape Haze Property Owners Association (POA), we have access to the association's 400 yard long, private, Gulf beach, adjacent to Cape Haze on Don Pedro Island. The beach is accessible, by kayak, from Don Pedro Island State Park's 100 acre land base, 0.9 miles from our property. It is a 4-minute (280 yard) paddle from the Park's dock to our community dock on the island, then a 5-minute (500 yard) walk to the Gulf.

In addition to the beaches adjacent to us on Don Pedro (Palm) Island, accessible by kayak, boat or ferry, the closest beach by car is at 19th St. on Gasparilla Island (Boca Grande), about 10 minutes away. Once you reach 19th St. there is beach access on virtually every street all the way to the south end of the island, which is another 3-1/2 miles. So there are literally dozens of Gulf beaches. You can also drive north to Manasota Key in Englewood which is only about 15 minutes away. Once on Manasota Key there are three major county park beaches at (1) the north, (2) middle and (3) south end of the Key. In addition, there is Stump Pass State Park, which is at the very south end of the Key and is absolutely stunning.

It is only 4 minutes by car to the Boca Grande Causeway and about 20 minutes by boat (at 'no wake' speeds) to Gasparilla Sound & Gulf access from our property on Amberjack Creek. By car we are minutes (1 to 15) away from multiple resources including Gulf beaches, fine-dining restaurants, multiple state parks, nature preserves, walking & biking trails, boat tours, fishing trips, etc.

Each guest is provided with a personalized code for keyless entry valid for the length of their stay. Check-in is 4:00 pm and check-out is 10:00 am. The rental rate includes the cleaning fee for guests staying a month or more. For guest staying less than a week this fee is $80. For guests staying more than a week and less than a month (28 days) the cleaning fee is $50. Upon arrival guests are provided with a detailed Guest Manual, describing all of the ins and outs of the property, including entertainment system operation, trash day, local resources and activities, etc. Confirmed guests are provided with their access code and a PDF copy of the manual, by email, in advance of their arrival.

Robert and Deborah Haynes purchased this house in 2014

Why Robert and Deborah Haynes chose Placida

We bought this house for a variety of reasons, but based largely because of our experiences in the area and because much of our family has chosen to resettle in this area. Robert's mother's family settled in Florida in the early 1900s and where active in the development of Florida in the Fort Pierce area on the east coast. Early on they were involved growing pineapples and latter in citrus groves and real estate. Robert’s mother in part, grew up in Florida with a sort of Tom Sawyer/Huck Finn existence. Later she returned to live near Fort Pierce and then in Boca Grande on Gasparilla Island. She passed on her love of Florida and its history to us.

Although we grew up and lived in diverse parts of the country and abroad, Robert and his brothers and sisters either live nearby or own property close by. We both love what this beautiful area of Florida and what is has to offer.

Between the two of us we have lived in and or visited many parts of Florida, the Gulf coast is our favorite. The Boca Grande/Cape Haze/Englewood area is the 'sweet spot' for us. We only 1 hour from all of the resources and activities offered by Sarasota and Fort Myers. This area is off the beaten path and with its slow pace, has much of the charm of 'Old Florida'. Access to beautiful, natural areas and Gulf beaches is exceptional. Our house is intended to express and take advantage of these gifts.

Terrible! Couldn't wait to leave this place!!!

  • 1 of 5

Owner said check-in could be 4/22 - then changed it to 4/23 at the last minute, outdoor fabric on very old furniture was in shreds as was an inside chair and another couch, sign on a/c thermostat said "do not set lover than 75" so the two bedrooms stayed hot registering 77, old paper shade on one bathroom window, screen had holes in it from birds, dresser was inside a closet so only 3 drawers were usable when an entire wall was available in that BR, worst thing was the kitchen sink backed up causing the sink and dishwasher to be unusable on day 5 - owner first said he wasn't sure he could get a plumber out to fix the problem until after we checked out 2 days later but then found a plumber for the next day btw 1-3p so we waited all afternoon but no plumber showed up. No grass, just tons of ant hills.

Excellent amenities

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed in several VRBO homes but this place had everything we could possible need. The kitchen was stocked with every type of pan, bowl, & baking accessory. It had enough dishware and silverware for a family of 12+. New granite counter-tops and a large kitchen table. We loved the sliding glass doors that were off of every room, all around the back of the house, which lead you into a large back enclosed patio, complete with furnishings. The patio was a great place to have our morning coffee and watch the Egrets, Blue Herrings, and other birds, as they flew down the stream...and occasionally stopped by to say hello.

This place was perfect for us to relax and enjoy nature. Private, yet not far away from all types of shopping, golfing, beaches and entertainment.

The owner was a pleasure to work with.

very peaceful small quite town!!

  • 5 of 5

Some friends and I went in September for 4 days and 3 nights. Robert was very friendly calling to make sure I had all questions answered and even let us in early to the house. The house was very roomy nice and spacious with a screened porched and river view. WE saw baby alligators and manatees swim by while fishing even caught a tarpon! The beaches are with in 15 minutes and publix and the gas station were in walking distance. There were bikes and rafts to use which were convient but you cant swim in the river. The yard was nice but it had not been cut and the grass was pretty high and the no see-ums were bad along with mosquitos, which was expected but I feel it could have been reduced with a mow and weed eating. Theres certain times of the year when just about EVERYTHING closes for a month we were the 2 days before this and it makes finding food and activities slim. Definetly enjoyed my time and would consider staying here again! The only thing it was missing is a pool. Very respectable and nice renters.

Owner's Response: Thank you for letting us know about the problem with the grass and weed situation. When we arrived here at the house a few days ago, we found essentially the same problems you described. As of today, the old landscape people are history. The weeds are now under control, and the grass will be mowed by the new people the day after tomorrow. We have just added three good fishing kayaks (Wilderness Tarpons, two 14 footers and a 12). Also, the 13 foot Gheenoe (fishing boat) in the back yard is being refurbished. We have just also just added two Dahon folding bicycles. A few trial rides haves shown these to be surprisingly good bikes.

We arrived at about 1AM on Friday night and were immediately impressed with the home. There was a problem with the AC on one end of the house but when I called The owner Saturday morning early he got it fixed within 2 hours. What impressed me was he said I should have called as soon as I realized there was a problem. We were traveling to see our new grand baby who lives on Gasporilla Island. This home was perfect for us. It is larger than we needed but it was well maintained and we will definitely stay here again. Again the owner was great and the property is excellent.

Private Cape Haze Beach on Don Pedro Island

The charming historic village of Boca Grande is located on Gasparilla Island just south of us. Gasparilla is in the same chain of islands as Sanibel and Captiva, but is unique in that there is a 'real' town on our island dating back to the 1800s. Gasparilla Island has been protected from over-development, and much of Boca Grande has been designated as an historic district with many buildings dating from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. There are several historic sites on the island, with one of the true gems being the Boca Grande Lighthouse which was built in 1890.

Gasparilla is famous for its pristine beaches, historic properties, notable visitors and world-class fishing. Everything in Boca is relaxed and moves at island pace. If you are looking for fast food or harried salespeople, you won't find them here.

You will, however, find that the village of Boca Grande offers a fantastic selection of casual and fine dining restaurants (with great bars), art galleries, outfitters, small specialty shops, gourmet shops with prepared foods, wines and cheeses, and our wonderful local market (Hudson’s) complete with a butcher. You will also find the Boca Grande Health Clinic, a Pilates and yoga studio, the Community Center, many beautiful churches and the beach! The beaches are open to the public and there is parking. Last, but not least there is the famous Gasparilla Inn, which now seems to have opened its restaurant to non-guests.

Periodically a sign will appear downtown saying 'shrimp boat is in', which means, get down to Whidden's Marina as fast as you can to get the freshest shrimp you can buy, straight from the man who caught it.

Visitors often choose to travel the island by bicycle. There is a beautifully maintained, paved, 'rails to trails' path that runs the length of the island for walking, running, skating, cycling and carting.
