This island is known for it's ability to take you away from the hustle and bustle of life, reconnect you with nature, and provide the kayaking, fishing, and weather you need to recharge your soul. A vibrant and growing art scene, as well as the Historic Matlacha Fishing Village (where this unit is located) make for a fun trip. Even though Matlacha doesn't have beaches the way Sanibel and Fort Myers Beach do, trips to visit nearby beaches make a perfect day trip (an average 45 minutes by car). We look forward to hosting you in our vacation home!

Hidden Slice of Paradise

Scott is very efficient and was always available if needed. Fortunately, we had everything we needed! The Fishing Shanty is perfect if you like a touch of rustic and being able to walk to restaurants, shops, and the marinas. A very short walk to the Perfect Cup for a wonderful breakfast and good conversation! The kayak shown in the photos is not the kayak that is there, it is only a single. However, that was minor, we just walked past Hooked and rented a double and paddled up to the bridge and enjoyed the dolphins! The only other tip I have for other travelers is bring essentials such as soap, laundry stuff, etc. I use HomeAway for most of my travels and these vary from place to place. We left items such as a bait bucket, lotions, etc. for other to use. I think it just depends on who was there previously. Everything else is there. ENJOY! It is GREAT....we will return.

Owner's Response: We open communication so you can ask questions you may have during your stay. Sorry you didn't ask about our two-man kayak that is located across the canal. Also, extra products available in storage area. We always want you to have what you need! We accept responsibility if we could have made your visit more pleasant and commit ourselves to even more excellence in the future. Thanks for your comments!

Quiet and peaceful place for a vacation

  • 5 of 5

We spent a very relaxing week at the Fishin' Shanty in February. The house is clean, nicely decorated and furnished, with a very well-equipped kitchen, and has a nice canal-side deck for relaxing in the sun. When we arrived, there was a minor problem with the washing machine, but Scott, the owner, got it corrected very quickly, so that we were able to do a week's worth of laundry that we had accumulated since leaving home, and before arriving in Matlacha. The location of the Fishin' Shanty is very good, and it's an easy walk to the Perfect Cup for breakfast, and to the shops in Matlacha for souvenir-hunting. There is a fishing pier in the park right across the road, where you can walk out to see many different kinds of water birds, and if you're lucky, dolphins swimming in the bay. There are also a couple of good restaurants within easy walking distance for dinner. We met a couple of the neighbors, and found them to be friendly and welcoming. We would definitely recommend the Fishin' Shanty to anyone looking for a quiet vacation rental in the Matlacha area.

We enjoyed our stay. It suited our needs very well. It was a bit out of the way for some of our destinations (an hour from Sanibel), but the colorful community was fun and breakfasts on the deck watching osprey nests was great. Bed was high for a short person. A step stool would have helped. Otherwise very comfortable.

A most fantastic hideaway in a most amazing old time Florida town.

  • 5 of 5

Clean, nicely appointed, peaceful historic hideaway in a great neighborhood in old time Florida. Scott was responsive, helpful, non intrusive and a generally great person to deal with. The cottage is known in the neighborhood as "butterfly house" and locals are friendly and helpful. The town is great and quaint and shuttered by 9pm...unless you need a cocktail at the couple of local bar/restaurants we discovered. Walking, biking, kayaking, bird All starting from a perfect location. Feel like a local and.....if you have freckles....BEWARE.....the no-see-ums will LOVE you!! Start a conversation with a neighbor for their thoughts on best repellant and itch will have a friend for life!!

Oh!!! And for extra kayak rental or launch or Eco tour or fishing adventure...toddle down to Carmen's ....she is knowledgable kind and loves to share her secret spots!! ❤️

While being a world renowned fishing village, the area is also known for excellent kayaking, emerging artists, and excellent eateries and entertainment. In less than an hour you can be scouring the beaches of Sanibel or Captiva searching for the latest shells the tide has left behind. Of course, Vida de le Isla, is all about the relaxed island life, so you'll probably like to do a lot of 'nothing'.
