I am frequently asked about fishing in the river .. recently “Tim” was staying at Bocatura and contributed the following (Feb 2016).
“Fishing was good and I caught permit, barracuda, snapper, jacks and catfish just in front of the property (Bocatura)…..The water was clear and I caught on both lures and shrimp, fish and conch baits. I put in the hours to get the results but quickly learned that sunset and the first hour of darkness was the best time no matter what time the high tide was. Tony told me I was the best fisherman that had stayed but I expect I just stuck at it to find what worked and when. Fishing from the kayak was great fun.”

Recent guest comment: ”We had a fabulous time in Hopkins and at Bocatura. We ended up doing more diving than we planned, and had a really amazing time with Lucie, Declan and their crew. Because of that, we didn't spend a ton of time on the river or any time at all at the beach! We went out to South Water Caye and to Glover's Reef. Fantastic weather and beautiful diving. Saw lots of wildlife down there, turtles, rays, eels, even a blacktip reef shark!
As for the cabin, it was totally lovely. There wasn't a lot of wind and we were there right after some rainy weather, so I think the mosquitoes were in full effect, but we had a nice time hanging out on the deck, and it stayed pretty cool indoors. You've done a great job making it comfortable, and it had everything we needed. Maybe one thing that would have been nice would be a place to put a little clothesline on the patio, to hang wet things out to drip-dry? Bet the guys didn't think of that! That's my only tiny suggestion.
Anthony and co were all really friendly, great and helpful. In fact, every single person that we met in Belize, locals, ex-pats and travelers, were all totally nice and helpful. We couldn't have asked for a better trip.”

About Doug Barber
Saltwater fly fishing was the addiction that brought my family to Hopkins, Belize has a laid back atmosphere and warm, friendly people. We enjoy scuba diving and have wonderful pictures of our experiences.
Doug Barber purchased this Cabin in 2016
Why Doug Barber chose Stann Creek
Hopkins was a natural choice for me. The flats are a quick panga ride away and the local restaurants are excellent. If you are looking for a relaxed, laid back town, Hopkins fits the bill perfectly.

My experience with our stay at the Bocatura cabins near Hopkins,Belize Nov. 4th to Nov 17th 2017
Even before we arrived at the location i asked many questions of the owner Doug Barber. He answered each and everyone plus added other pertinent advice which was most beneficial to the enjoyment of our stay. Due to unforeseen circumstances the actual cabin we had paid for became unavailable. He upgraded us to another cabin which would have been at a substantially higher cost at no increase. The cabin was well equipped and in the few instances where items we thought should be available through his onsite "property manager" remedies were forthcoming very quickly. During our stay of 2 weeks the owner was personally in the country for a few days and visited us to ensure our needs were being met and went out of his way to assist us. I would however draw to the attention of any would be person contemplating staying there to be aware that it is about 3 miles to the central area of Hopkins (where one would have to go for any grocery shopping etc.). Though two bicycles were provided the roads are atrocious and extremely difficult to travel on by bicycles. Were i to stay there again i would only do so if i had motorized transportation. This information is only provided for knowledge and in no way reflects on the care and attention given to us during our stay. Also as an example of the attention given unfortunately the onsite "caretaker" abandoned his job and left. However immediately Mr. Barber through his property manager arranged for another couple close by to "keep an eye" on us and our interaction with Israel and Elvira became a memorable part of our stay. This location has a great deal of natural beauty in a jungle like environment on the Sittee river. If one desires that and peace and tranquility it is in abundance at this location. We kayaked and fished on the river about 20 feet in front of the cabin. The river is tranquil with a slow current to the sea. For those that have not been to Belize one should not expect the the luxury amenities that they might be used to in their home countries as Belize is a very poor country. Our choice of the Hopkins area as our vacation choice was based on numerous online notations of the friendliness of the local population. This was demonstrated abundantly during our stay. We felt very safe there.Mr. Barber demonstrates those most desirable qualities that exemplify a caring and considerate host. We thank him for the assistance in adding to what will be fond memories of our stay in Hopkins/Belize.
Thanks Fred and Christine. Btw Fred is a spry 78 and made the trip to the Oasis on bicycle every other day for his smoothie and then bicycled into town for shopping and adventure. I think he knows more residents then I do.
We were robbed in Cabin 4, Cabin 2 robbed, we left early.
Sad to say, we were robbed in Cabin 4 and so were the people in Cabin 2. This is one of the few times in our years of travel and living in other countries we have to write a negative review about security and safety. Bocatura Cabins was beautiful, tranquil and an ideal out of the way place to stay. The cabin was clean, well-furnished and adequate. However, security was a major issue. We were robbed of cash within 24 hours of checking in to Cabin 4 and a week later Cabin 2 had the door kicked in and was robbed of cash. On arrival the safe locked shut after following the instructions and we were not able to open it or use it until several days later when the property manager sent out a key. We were robbed sometime the day before having the key to the lock box. We filed a police report, as did Cabin 2 and we were both told by the police and several locals they had a suspect or suspects in mind. We passed this information on to the property manager and since Cabin 2 was the 2nd robbery during our stay we checked out 2 days early. The owner did not respond to our email for several days and his response was patronizing and very disappointing. Bottom line –this is a beautiful but risky place to stay and there are many other choices.
This is a beautiful place to stay. And I did arrive in Belize to inspect the units about three days of the alleged incident. The guest exaggerates the situation. Yes, the world over can be vandalized if you do not lock up your unit. The unit shows no signs of forced entry, the keyed entry knob and dead bolt were intact and working. If the dead bolt is used the door would have to been kicked down to gain entry. When I inspected the the unit the safe was operational. And there are security bars on the windows. There is no indication this unit was entered. Units should always be secured when you leave.
Look at my VRBO response rate and you see i respond with 24 hours. But will not engage in war of words over the internet.
We are in a beautiful rural setting along the Sittee River. We have several repeat long term guests who find Bocatura to be a peaceful retreat. Please read the other reviews.
A great experience!
My wife and I had a great 5 days at the Bocatura Banks. The location is private, quiet, well maintained and right on the river. It's important that you understand that the Banks isn't a "resort" where people will cater to your desire for a Mojito, it's a beautiful "fishing camp" and a perfect location from which to explore the rest of Belize and get a feel for what it might be like to live in that remarkable country. Our cabin was comfortable, if rustic, and had everything we needed. Maybe a bit hotter water for the shower would have made my wife happier, but otherwise we found it perfectly fit our needs. Because we had other business I never got to fish the river but the amount of splashing, jumping, swirling and general fishy activity made it clear there would be more than enough action for any fisherman. We awoke every morning to keel-billed toucans and green parrots zipping back and forth through the trees and occasionally coatimundi roaming the property, and at night sat on the deck and watched the stars. Our first night we were surprised by a huge tapir standing in the parking area for our cabin. It was quite a thrill. I would most certainly recommend Bocatura Banks to anyone who wants an experience that isn't a hotel, chi-chi resort type of place. It was amazing.
Great place, great location
I really loved this cabin. It is out of the way of the city enough but not too far away. I made the mistake of only choosing to stay one night and really wish I had more time here. Doug was very helpful with all of my questions and needs. It was very close to the river, in fact it's in the front yard. We really loved using the kayaks and going up and down the river. Wish we had more time to go further. Went to Barricuda bar and grill for dinner and had some very amazing seafood and great drinks. The owners were nice to talk with as well. I highly recommend it. The cabin had everything we could ever need. We definitely felt spoiled. Was very thankful for the sun room. It was very peaceful to sit in at night and listen and breathe in the fresh air. Thanks Doug!
Birder's paradise. Eco Lodge like setting and rustic comfort.
Well maintained, comfortable stocked with everything you need!
The owner is super responsive to any questions, sends out great local information as your dates get closer. One day we saw 17!!!! toucans playing in the yard.
Very Cool Cabins
The cabin had everything we needed. It was spacious and more than enough room for two. We loved Hopkins village and met many wonderful people there. We missed it as soon as we left. If you are going for a get away and leaving the phones at home, this is the place for you. The internet is available but is spotty at best. However, I did not come to Belize to sit on my phone. I came for rainforests, and ruins, and to dive into a new culture. I got all that and more. The cabin was just beautiful and you can sit on the porch and watch the iguanas, as the river rolls quietly by. There is one tiny complaint. I think the parking should be closer to the cabins. It rained the first night and we had water over our ankles. The crab were everywhere, which was new for people from Central Texas. I highly recommend a 4x4. We requested one, but Avis gave us a Suzuki Sidekick, which is a very tiny car. That car handled the roads and mud holes like a champ, but would have been a much faster trip with the 4x4. I absolutely loved it here and cannot wait to go back. Other than the parking and the crab, it was perfect! I highly recommend a trip to Bocatura Cabins. You can sit back and enjoy peace and quiet by the river. If your feeling like getting out, venture the mile into town and eat at one of the wonderful restaurants. I personally know I will be coming back. I came with my best friend of many years, but want to share the magic of Bocatura and Stann Creek with my husband. We put over 1600 miles on our rental, venturing around Belize. Pack some baby oil for sand flies (around beach areas), some bug spray, and take off. Have a wonderful trip and take Doug's advice...... stop for the ice cream/ frozen yogurt. It is out of this world! I am not sure if I used the excuse to get ice cream to drive Hummingbird Highway, or the drive on Hummingbird Highway to get ice cream. It was so spectacular. Thank you Doug for allowing us to enjoy a little piece of your heaven. I will absolutely see you soon!
yes, it when it rains it pours in Belize. Best to have two pairs of footwear!
Please you enjoyed the cabins..
