I grew up in Olympia, graduating from Olympia High. My parents and family live across Eld Inlet. I now live in San Francisco and run an interior design firm. I like to come to Olympia often for family visits and to enjoy the Great Northwest.
Kathy purchased this house in 2007
I bought this property because of the fabulous Mt Rainier views and the waterfront location. It is amazing to watch the water change with the seasons and the time of day. It is amazing to wake up looking across Eld Inlet to Mt Rainier! I often kayak across the Bay to visit my parents who live on Cooper Point. Or, it is a short drive.
'Pickering' is an amazing retreat! It is a great place to decompress and relax. It is very romantic! One can take walks on the beach and enjoy the views. There are lots of outdoor activities available nearby.
We booked this waterfront flat for the hot tub but it came with much more. While I was packing, I received an email that the flat was ready and I could move in anytime. I have rented many VRBOs and no one has proactively let me know I can move in early until Wendy, one of the homeowners. This is a family owned respite and has such a feel. We felt at home preparing meals, enjoying a fire in the fireplace, and selecting a novel from the abundant library. It was Seahawk Sunday so we enjoyed the game on a TV much bigger than our own. And then there's the view. It was sunny and clear so we experienced Mt. Rainer over the water while in the hot tub. Not to be missed. You can't go wrong with this vacation rental!
We love the Olympia cottage, the deck views were spectacular, the rocky beach always fun to explore, the hot tub inviting at night. Some people have called the decor dated, we found it charming and cozy with plenty of space to hang out between excursions. The location is just remote enough to not have the city next door but not so remote as to make groceries and dinners a bother. It's only about 20 minutes to Olympia but it's also close to parks, nature trails and other goodies. The cottage was very well stocked, in fact I would say the most well stocked of any of the VRBO homes I have rented. The pantry was stuffed with cooking essentials that you might forget when shopping. The bed was comfortable and there's a great TV room and an extra bathroom. The kitchen is small but has a table and everything you may need. There are bookshelves crammed with books, binoculars to view across the sound and an amazing view of Mt. Rainier, which is spectacular at sunset. We would go on excursions during the day and then go back to the cottage and have dinner and soak in the tub under the moon. All in all we had a great time here and I'd highly recommend this location if you're visiting the area. The only drawback was the traffic between SeaTac and Olympia, but that's due to construction on the freeway that I'm sure will be done at some point.
Although the house could use some updates, the bed was super comfortable. A new hot tub was being delivered the day we left which was much needed. Super quiet and secluded area where neighbors are nearby but with the vegetation, privacy is not an issue. Kathy and Wendy were quite accessible with any questions. The view was outstanding!!!!!!!! Although we did not use kayaks they were available for use.
Our family enjoyed the view of the Puget Sound, the beach combing, and the remote location of the home. Seeing deer every day and enjoying the fresh air was wonderful.
We do feel like the level of cleanliness left something to be desired. Sitting on the furniture produced a cloud of dust, many spider webs in the air vents throughout the home, mold and a definite musty smell underneath the sink in the kitchen. Many of the things in the house are over 30 years old and not well taken care of. Also, the home is advertised to include children, yet the manager of the home had a hard time with our daughter playing with a soft, pillow-like door stop, that was on the floor. There is a request to leave our shoes outside the home, but the floors were filthy and not well cleaned. The level of expectations for the renters seems to exceed the level of expectations for themselves.
The first time I did dishes there was a lack of drainage in the kitchen sink. It was taken care of very quickly, and we appreciated that.
In the description, it is mentioned that there are full amenities. My understanding is that this would include a washer and dryer. We rent from VRBO multiple times per year and all the houses (with all amenities) include a washer and dryer.
We will not recommend this property to our friends or relatives.
My boyfriend and I stayed for 2 nights during the 4th of July weekend to get away from our every day busy lifestyle. The beach home is a bit outdated but we both loved the eclectic furniture and decor. It felt very at home and quite cozy. It was perfect for us. There were quite an array of books. It was fun to peruse through them. There were a few games. We took advantage of playing Risk and Mancala. We don't watch much TV so we never turned on the TV even once. However, the internet connectivity is quite lacking. It's very slow. I ran a speedtest on it, and I was getting 5 megabits per second if I'm lucky. It was no big deal as it wasn't important to us. We were getting excellent connectivity with both Verizon and AT&T on our phones. The kitchen is well-stocked with all the amenities that we needed. We brought food & snacks so we didn't have to leave the home so we can just concentrate on relaxing and not have to think of anything else. We did take advantage of cooking meals on the grill. There were charcoal briquettes provided and there was a lighter device in the kitchen. We ate all our meals on the deck overlooking Eld Inlet and even had an amazing view of Mount Rainier. We brought two of our own 12 1/2 foot paddle boards with our own safety equipment so we didn't take advantage of the kayaks provided. We were able to easily store the paddle boards on the deck at night. During the day, we kept them at the bottom of the wooden stairs leading to the beach. The water can get quite choppy in the afternoons. There is a considerable difference between low and high tide. I would advise bringing thick soled shoes to walk along the beach during low tide as it's very rocky. It's great for beach combing and we found quite a few pretty shells to take home. We especially took advantage of the hot tub. It was perfect to relax in after paddle boarding and perfect at night with some wine. Wendy did a wonderful job of keeping us updated throughout the whole process and even surprised us one morning with a very cute gift basket of goodies. The thought and details that went into everything was just amazing! The bed in the main bedroom is a comfortable king size bed. We shut off the hot tub at night so we can listen to the water. We really enjoyed our stay and would do it again!
