Why Ric Barth chose Rend Lake

My son, Ric, at the age of 15 and I went down to the Wayne Fitzgerald State Park on Rend Lake in 2001 to attend the annual Celebrity Quail Hunt, sponsored by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Foundation. It was such an enjoyable experience and beautiful surroundings that we have attended this three day event every year since then.

As a result of our travels around the area we had the opportunity to meet a local Hall of Fame Fishing Guide who ended up taking us out fishing every time we went south to participate in the Quail Hunt. What was scheduled as a three day hunting event ended up becoming a five day event, split between fishing and quail hunting.

During one of our trips to southern Illinois we came upon a 9 acre parcel of land with a house, 10 stall enclosed boat storage building and a pole barn. It was for sale. Except for one neighbor it was totally surrounded by government land. In addition, it was practically right next door to Wayne Fitzgerald State Park and Rend Lake. We bought it!

Ricky was about to graduate from Bradley University with a degree in Construction Management. As a result he put his education to work and undertook to completely remodel the house and manicure the grounds in 2011.

Upon graduation he took up residency adjacent to the property and accepted a position with Shawnee Professional Services, a local Survey and Engineering company.

In addition, he is now a fishing guide with that Hall of Fame Fishing Guide, Todd Gessner of Todd Gessner Outdoors. He also has access to private goose and deer hunting facilities within minutes from our location.

The property was very nice.

We really enjoyed our stay. The fully stocked kitchen and covered porch were both really nice to have. The house was clean and had everything we needed. We will return next year if scheduling works out.

Overall Great Experience

  • 5 of 5

This trip was a "meet in the middle" event with family. Ric's home had everything we needed. We each brought our dog and it worked out wonderfully. The home is very close to the lake and the grounds were very wet and muddy, so dog stayed out until they were hosed down for the night. There was a winery, convenient store and state park right down the street. As well as a very nice church for Sunday morning.

Sandy & Joe

My husband and I recently stayed for a hunting weekend. Owner was easy to work with. We met with the owners son, Ric, and he provided hunting tips and offered his cell # to call with any questions. His hospitality was more than we expected. We especially enjoyed being able to BBQ and build a fire near the pavilion. Lots of great hunting and fishing close by. Great restaurants in either direction within 3-5 miles. The house was spacious and very comfortable. The bathroom could use a little TLC but was functional. Overall, we really enjoyed the property and have booked again for next year.

Nice option for the area

Overall this was a pretty nice place to stay. Updates on the house are very nice. Cleanliness was marginal. Were not confiedent the bed linens were clean. Be aware that there is no WiFi and the 2nd bathroom is in the garage.

Owner's Response: Dear Ms. Kelly, I would like to thank you for your comments. I response, I thought you would like to know, that I corrected the website to more accurately reflect the location of the second bathroom. The Wi-Fi service in our immediate area, which as you know is rural, has been marginal at best. However, we continue to search for a service provider that is able to provide adequate cost effective accessibility. The bed linens are slightly oversized for the 10 new mattresses currently in use consequently; they have somewhat of a loose fit. Rest assured that all the beds are stripped after the guests have checked out, no matter how many guest have stayed. All the bed linens are laundered and the mattress covers are disinfected. We will continue to make every effort to keep the lodge as clean as possible in order to minimize any concerns of our future guests. Again, thank you for your comments and thank you for booking your recent stay with Gun Creek Sportsmen’s Club. Hope to see you again. Ric

Exactly what we were looking for!

  • 5 of 5

At the recommendation of a friend, my son and I had the opportunity to book a stay at Gun Creek Sportsman’s Club, in southern Illinois. We found it to be a very comfortable and relaxing atmosphere in an impressive setting. I can see why hunters and fishermen like this place. The accommodations were perfect and it is very close to Rend Lake!

Not being familiar with the area, we weren’t sure what activities would be available to us so we contacted the owner’s son, Ric Barth, who also guides for Todd Gessner Outdoors and he was able to guide us to a very good day of fishing (caught a mess of fish). Ric also made arrangements for us to do a little Skeet Shooting and we managed to squeeze in a round of golf at Rend Lake Golf Course which was just minutes away. The hospitality was much more than we expected.

Gun Creek is very convenient to all kinds of outdoor activities. We will definitely return next spring for a longer stay with the whole family.

The experience proved to be well worth the trip and provided for a very relaxing weekend.

Gun Creek definitely brings the comforts and amenities of home to the outdoors!
