Why Deborah Krzyzaniak chose Willoughby Spit
This property was built during the early 20th century. This house was used as an officer's quarters during World War II. General McArthur actually stayed in this house at one time. Aside from it's history it is only steps from the Willoughby Beach. The view from the back porch is spectacular, especially the sunrises! You will be amazed at how close you are to the water. It will be an experience you will not forget!
What makes this House unique
Prime location in Hampton Roads Virginia. The house is located on Willoughby Spit next to a fabulous fishing pier and restaurant. Downtown Norfolk is 15 minutes, Virginia Beach front is 30 minutes, Hampton is 15 minutes, Newport News, 30 minutes, and Colonial Williamsburg is 45 minutes away. If you want to take a day trip to Charlottesville and visit Thomas Jefferson's home, it is worth it! It is 2 and 1/2 hours each way.

We spent a long weekend at this wonderful home celebrating our 35th Ladies Weekend Out.
It is in a great location. The restaurant at the Pier and Thirsty Camel are within walking distance.
There was enough more than enough room for the ten of us. The kitchen was well equipped. The deck is fabulous.
I would highly recommend this home!
Super location and great beach access
Our second stay here was every bit as terrific as the first. Our tennis team (6 couples) needed a place midway between Norfolk and Newport News... Couldn't have found a better place for group meals, beach access, and just relaxing. Thanks to our hostess for her always great communication! We hope to return next year!
Beautiful house with character
The house had everything we needed. The view from the second floor porch was amazing.
Perfect house for our family!
Several members of our family traveled to Virginia for my son-in-law's retirement from the Navy. This house fit our needs perfectly. We love to cook and relax and be together and we were able to do all of those things. The house is big enough so that you are not tripping over each other. On Saturday there was a group in the living room watching college football, some on the beach and a few taking naps! Speaking of the beach, this house is in a gorgeous spot. There were very few people even though it was Labor Day weekend and the sunrises were worth getting up for! We also had a thunderstorm one night and everyone was out on the porch enjoying nature's show. Debbie was great to work with. She responded within minutes for the few questions we had and even contacted me when we hadn't checked in by 4 pm. Everyone agreed we should make this an annual trip to the beachhouse at Willoughby Spit.
Gorgeous and Relaxing
The home is as advertised. Appliances are up-to-date and well kept. We took full advantage of the wrap around porch. We probably spent more hours on the porch (watching the sunrise and the ships) than we did in the family room which has an up-to-date TV with all the channels could possibly need. Kitchen is well equipped to cook in. We baked, fried and griddled our breakfasts in everyday to start our days slow and ramped up from there. With the ocean literally feet away my family made time for the beach everyday. My wife and I came with our family, 2 adult children, their spouses, three grandchildren and two dogs. Plenty of room for everyone with the home and property is very child and pet friendly. Finally as a host, Deborah was very responsive to any questions or needs we may have had.She was a delight to deal with and made our stay in Norfolk that much more enjoyable.
A lovely house with lots of character and a great view and beach!
We have stayed in many beach side properties over the years (mostly in NC and with many more amenities) and this Chesapeake Bay house is our favorite! We love the history of the house (One of the locals shared that the house was built by a sailor for his wife in a town about 20 mins away. She couldn’t see when he came in from sea, so he had the house moved here where she could easily watch for him from the “widow’s peak”.) and its wooden floors and door trims.
Important things to note - It is not possible to access the widow's peak nor right under it (although a door is visible in the pics). You are not supposed to go out onto the middle deck given that it is a rubber membrane (as opposed to real flooring). Also, it is near a naval base so there were planes and helicopters flying around, but we liked them!
Things we particularly loved - the house has many bedrooms (mostly with shared bathrooms of which all but one have been renovated). My bro (who sells appliances) heartily approved of the gas stove and w/d. The wrap around porch is amazing. We loved the wicker furniture and two tables facing the bay. We spent little time inside. The pier provided interesting sights as did the ships going in and out of the bay. There is a fenced yard (So you can let the dog and kids out w/o worrying about them taking off.) and you can park your cars inside of it. There were a few flat screen TVs in the house which was nice for the kids. There is also a dead end street one block towards town that had good dog walking areas.
Some reviews talk about the lack of sufficient a/c, but there were special extra units on the second and third floors that kept it cool. Perhaps they were put in after the reviews?
Most of all - there were few people on the beach the whole week we were there. It seems to be more of a residential area than the usual rental areas.
Think about making the trek over to Fort Monroe and doing a Segway tour with Patriot Tours and visiting the museum.
FYI - There are 14 steps to the middle floor bedrooms and another 14 to the top MBR. But there is a bedroom street side that is on the ground floor. There are about 8 steps up to the porch on the side, so someone with some mobility would be able to access the house.
The owner, Deborah, was so nice to work with. We would definitely return to this place!
