Why Deborah Krzyzaniak chose Willoughby Spit
This property was built during the early 20th century. This house was used as an officer's quarters during World War II. General McArthur actually stayed in this house at one time. Aside from it's history it is only steps from the Willoughby Beach. The view from the back porch is spectacular, especially the sunrises! You will be amazed at how close you are to the water. It will be an experience you will not forget!
What makes this House unique
Prime location in Hampton Roads Virginia. The house is located on Willoughby Spit next to a fabulous fishing pier and restaurant. Downtown Norfolk is 15 minutes, Virginia Beach front is 30 minutes, Hampton is 15 minutes, Newport News, 30 minutes, and Colonial Williamsburg is 45 minutes away. If you want to take a day trip to Charlottesville and visit Thomas Jefferson's home, it is worth it! It is 2 and 1/2 hours each way.

House was beautiful inside and out with lovely beach view.
Beach house was the pefect place for all our family to stay together celebrating our daughters college graduation weekend. House was clean, ready with all amenities needed.
Outstanding rental property and communication
The house was spacious and up to date. The rooms were spacious and the beach views are gorgeous. The kitchen was well equipped and had plenty of dishes and pots and pans. The owner was very responsive. One room was missing a TV remote and she provided a replacement same day. Will definitely stay in this home again.
Our group enjoyed the stay.
We enjoyed having a quiet spacious place to stay on our business trip. It was nice having all the cooking utensils we needed, private and common areas, and having a washer and dryer. The internet was fast and the beach was pretty. The house wasn't quite as clean as I would have liked, and basic hygiene items such as body wash and shampoo was not provided as I have become accustomed to in similar rental situations. It was also hard to control the heat on the first level, on cold days we were cold while watching television or eating dinner. Overall we were happy with our stay.
Dear Derek: Thank you for reviewing our property. I am glad that you were happy with your stay overall. I wish you would have called about the heat since we do have a back up heating source (radiators) for those very cold, windy days. Thank you for letting me know that we could improve on the cleaning. I will definitely check more carefully behind my cleaning staff and investigate how we can improve on that. Sincerely, Deborah K.
This is a cautious review and future renters must decide on their own how they would have responded this specific situation. We've use HomeAway successfully for years and never dealt with this problem. A rental experience isn't just based on the home alone but on the owner's response and attitude towards the comfort of their guests. Initially i wanted to give this property a one star review but i felt i needed to be totally honest and fair.
First of all, the property is exactly as described....a beautiful 1910 Victorian style home on the beach. It has been updated and remodeled.
My negative review is based on the owners response to a maintenance issue. During one of the coldest days of the year (30's day and 18 degrees F at night), we had no heat. Well, not exactly no heat but pretty much close to it. Our stay was 3 days. The thermostat never got above 67 degrees on two of the 3 nights we stayed. That first freezing night we called the property management company listed in the house manual and the property manager was , according to the voice mail, on vacation so we hunkered down and shivered. The next day i contacted the property owner and she came over within an hour (excellent response time) to check out the house. She engaged a secondary heating system. That never came on. That was our second night sleeping in sweat clothes , hats and socks. The next morning the property management company called to say they haven't been the property manager in years. The owner did send a heating repair man that morning but by that time the system began working. Unfortunately the back up system is either on or off (the owner's words) and we spent the final night with the thermostat reading 78 degrees.
My 3 star review is based on the fact I requested a partial refund for the 2 days of freezing and one day of sweating. The owner's response was 10% and "happy new year".
To be totally fair, i did not ask the owner for a specific amount but i think 10% was woefully inadequate.
It's not just about $. It's about the attitude. If you are in the hospitality business then you need to respond appropriately.
Again, you decide.
Yes, I agree: everyone reading this should decide for themselves. I responded to your request to bring the temp above 67 degrees by coming over and turning on the alternate heating system. The next morning, I made a second trip over and turned the heat even higher. In addition I made a trip to the store to purchase space heaters to supplement the heat just in case you were not warm enough. When I stopped by to deliver them, I was told I was a "miracle worker" and that is was nice and warm inside. Had I known that it was "too warm" , I would have come back over and adjusted the thermostat to accommodate you. You always had access to the oil burner thermostat and could have adjusted it yourself. In conclusion, it is always my intention to be kind and to make my customers happy. I am sorry that you were not comfortable during your stay.
Super location. Nice kitchen amenities, good for families and couples. Great porch, right on beach!
Highly recommended. Responsive owner and very accommodating. Would definitely stay here again and will happily tell others about it!
Beach house with character
Our family stayed at the Blue Beach house for 4 days while celebrating our daughter's wedding. Plenty of room for our group of 7 adults and 2 children. Kitchen is well stocked with plenty of table ware, pans, utensils. I liked the gas stove with griddle. We spent much of our time on the porches and walking the beach front. Bathrooms and kitchen are updated. Comfortable beds with plenty of pillows. Nice to have laundry. My only recommendation is to have a larger and cleaner outdoor grill. The owner was quick to respond to emails and very easy to work with. This is an older home, but has been well maintained. I recommend for anyone needing a place in the area for a larger group. Thanks!!
Kriste: I am so happy that you enjoyed your stay! Thank you for your suggestion about the grill. I will be replacing the grill this fall. Deborah K.
