Bracken House is located on the outskirts of Old Town; close to wineries, theatres, parks, biking trails. Ideal for groups of friends, families or small staff retreats; this newly renovated, 1,085 sq.ft. bungalow is pleasantly situated on 2/3 acre. Bedrooms: Master has queen bed w/ensuite bath, North has a queen bed, and South a double bed. Fully equipped kitchen, wood-burning fireplace, patios with BBQ and dining table, fire pit. WIFI, and TV/DVD players in living room and basement meeting room. The basement room has 2 queen-sized hide-a-bed couches for additional guests and a third bathroom adjacent, upon request. Use of the basement room for overflow is available for an additional surcharge. Further accommodation options include 2 full suites at our adjacent property, Bushy House B&B. Relax, kick back, and slow down. Aaah.
When we moved to Niagara-on-the-Lake from Calgary, we were drawn by this beautiful town, its architecture and environs. We purchased an acre property, designed and built our house (my husband, David, is an architect). We have successfully operated Bushy House B&B since 1999, and have enjoyed the many guests that have come, quite a few of whom come back every year to their Niagara home away from home. We are raising our family here, and love living where we are close to the town, but surrounded by parks and woodland. We have big perennial and vegetable gardens, chickens, and are even trying our hand at beekeeping!
Bracken House is a natural extension of this life we've built, and the two properties merge, separated by a wooded ravine and the path between them. We have enjoyed renovating it, and have come to realize what a gem it is, with its bright and sunny aspect, and mature gardens rimmed by parks and orchards behind.
I am an artist who works sculpturally, lives creatively, and volunteers teaching art at various local elementary schools. We are quite involved in our church, have some great friendships here. I love my book group; enjoy gardening, and our chickens. Life expands even more as we have come to form friendships with some of the Jamaican seasonal workers who labour in the orchards and vineyards around us. We are rather fond of this place we live!
Jodie Godwin purchased this house in 2014
It has always felt like a gift to live on the lovely green corner, and we feel more like stewards of it, and grateful to be here. I grew up in cities, but now I love being a part of this beautiful small town. Sometimes, when I see a horse-drawn carriage going by, I enjoy a chat with a friend at the grocery store, or I catch a glimpse of the blue-green lake, and wonder at the striation of colour of an orchard in spring - I am so glad to live here. Bushy House has been a place of renewal and refreshment for our guests for years, and now we look forward to extending that to those who come to Bracken House.
You can spend your day wandering the Old Town, sightseeing in Niagara Falls, doing winery tours throughout the peninsula, or taking in a show or three at Shaw, and then? Then, you can retreat to the quiet and green space that is Bracken House. One of the last stands of Carolinian forest on Lake Ontario is just down the road, so many species of birds can be seen amidst the mature gardens. Before we owned it, Bracken was home to an avid gardener for years, and so we can all enjoy the fruits of her labours throughout the season. The home is bright and clean, and affords a place to unwind and enjoy time with friends in a casual atmosphere. Because it can be combined with the accommodations at Bushy House, Bracken House can also be a place for small group retreats. If your arrival is going to be a later one, or if you just want a chance to get your bearings, provisions for your first breakfast can be stocked at Bracken upon request. For those at Bushy House, our full breakfasts are still being served, brought to your suite in a large basket. At Bushy House, you can enjoy breakfast in the privacy of your suite or out on the garden deck or porch outside your room.
We strive to serve or make available fresh and local fare - Niagara is a good place for just that!
There were two couples, so we only rented half of the house.
The house was clean and beautifully decorated. Jodie and David were helpful and attentive hosts. If anything, the listing did not do justice to the house. I expected a lot, and our stay far exceeded my expectations.
I will recommend this house, and Bushy House (we stayed there one night too) to anyone travelling to Niagara-on-the-Lake.
By the way, the wine is very good too...
Stayed at Bracken House with a group of 10 girls and loved every minute. The house was clean, beautifully decorated and equipped with everything we could possibly need (the slippers were especially appreciated). Jodie was friendly and accommodating and went above and beyond to make sure we felt comfortable! Really enjoyed my stay and will definitely return!
Niagara-on-the-Lake is a beautiful historic town situated on the Niagara River and Lake Ontario. Home to the Shaw Festival, you can experience world-class theatre, dining, and wineries. Biking is a popular pastime especially along the Niagara Parkway, through vineyards and orchards. There are wine tours available, or you can do your own!
Stroll along Queen Street, do some shopping, and enjoy quaint and flower-filled streets. The Old Town has many beautiful Georgian homes. Is a romantic carriage ride more your speed? How about a jet boat tour? You'll have the opportunity to see things from the river - fast! There are also several places to launch a kayak if you like a slower pace.
Fresh and local food opportunities expand when the food trucks at the Farmer's Market converge on Wednesday nights and Saturday mornings. It's just down the road from Bracken House. There are many fruit stands around the peninsula - bring some back to enjoy at Bracken.
There are many shops along Queen Street to satisfy that itch, and you can go one further with a trip to the Outlet Mall at Niagara, near the QEW exit. Do come enjoy our peninsula and get some time away!
