About the property

4 Bdr/4.5 Bath--Enough Room for 4 Couples or 2 Families + Outdoor Shower!

Imagine relaxing in your very own pool, listening to the quiet hum of the distant surf, watching the perfect sunset. All that and more can be enjoyed in HALE KEANI ('House of Gentle Breezes')--a gorgeous home in a private, gated community.

Welcome to Keahou Estates, a private gated subdivision at an elevation 518 feet above the beautiful south Kona coastline, where the surf’s whisper greets you upon wakening and lullabies you to sleep at night. We are just around the corner from several restaurants, a grocery and a drug store, plus a movie theater; the snorkel beach is only 2 miles down the road; and downtown Kona is a short seven- to ten-minute drive. Our home is nestled well away from the main roads and near the end of a cul-de-sac. You'll find lush landscaping on either side for maximum privacy—you won’t even know you have neighbors! We sit well above the houses below, so much so that we can easily boast the best (and dare we say the most romantic) sunset view in the entire neighborhood.

Our home is in like-new condition and professionally decorated. You are going to love the modern furnishings as well as the travertine flooring throughout. Each of the four bedrooms has its own marble-tiled, full bathroom, as well as its own flat screen television, and private lanai. The master bedroom has even more: a whirlpool tub--and our brand-new outdoor shower garden! Guarantee that after using our new outdoor tropical shower garden, you will find it hard to ever shower indoors again! Granite countertops and custom cabinets line the open kitchen, which would make any chef happy with its Jenn-Air gas range and Dacor double oven and microwave. For casual dining, four wicker bar stools pull up to the over-sized kitchen island. The distressed teakwood dining table (one of a kind from Indonesia) seats eight. As for the living room, relax in comfort as you enjoy the entertainment of the High Definition TV with DVD and surround-sound speakers. Or sit back and listen to the concerto of your choice as it is played for you on the baby grand player piano. Finally, don’t miss the vaulted ceilings that span the entire living space! Open the sliding screen doors and let the outside in: ours is truly a floor plan that takes advantage of the island breezes.

Because let’s not forget that you’re in Hawaii; you’re going to want to spend most of your time outdoors. Feel free to laze away your days in both the infinity pool and the heated spa. We’ve got lounge chairs for tanning, cushioned chairs for reading and/or conversation, and Adirondacks for whale-watching--or just daydreaming (coffee, anyone?)! Before you know it, you’ll be enjoying all your meals in our Bali-inspired, covered outdoor dining area--fully equipped with a Weber gas grill, stainless steel sink, Frigidaire refrigerator, Vizio flat screen TV, and cocktail bar. Gather ‘round the antique wagon wheel table from Bali for pupus every night at 6pm sharp: once you’ve experienced our gorgeous sunset, you’ll never want to leave this private island getaway.

About Kathleen

We met 35 years ago at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana. Each of us grew up in suburban Chicago--we both come from families of seven kids! We have three children of our own whom we are very proud of. Together, we enjoy golfing, hiking, fishing, red wine, and watching the sunsets. We don't think we will ever get tired of spotting a whale breaching.

Kathleen purchased this house in 2015

Why Kathleen chose Keauhou

Our first visit to Hawaii was on our honeymoon in 1985. We returned for our 10th, and then again for our 15th anniversary, and we have been coming back to the Big Island to enjoy mini-honeymoons every year since. We've enjoyed Spring Break here with our children many times as well. We just love the Big Island for its beautiful weather and casual vibe.

What makes this house unique

Over the years, we have visited many homes on the Big Island. The first time we walked into this home, we knew it was the perfect one for us. Ocean views, and especially sunsets, are very important to us. Of all the houses we had seen, this was the only one that truly offered an unobstructed view of the ocean. Not a single rooftop blocks the view!

The house is the perfect size for our family: a master bedroom suite for us, and 3 other bedrooms, one for each of our grown children. And since each bedroom has its own beautiful bathroom, everybody gets their privacy! We know that as our family inevitably expands, there will be plenty of room for spouses and grandchildren.

Wonderful Home!

  • 5 of 5

My girlfriend and I just spent 10 fabulous days at this awesome home called “Hale Keani.” The home was exceptional! Beautifully decorated, exceptionally clean, and extremely comfortable. We slept like babies on those mattresses and enjoyed the cool breezes through the screened windows each night. The view is fantastic! We spent many mornings sitting on the lanai, drinking our coffee, peering through our binoculars at all of the boats, and watching the surf roll in—quietly—below. We parked ourselves at the same spot for the sunsets each night, too. It was truly peaceful.

The home is in a quiet subdivision, which was a plus for us. We drove to beaches both near and far and spent many dinners in downtown Kona, which is less than a ten-minute drive. There were several restaurants and a grocery store and drug store just minutes away. One afternoon, we took the tour up to the observatory at the top of Mauna Kea—truly stupendous views!—and watched the sunset from there. It was an experience I would recommend to any and every body (just bring warm clothes).

Thank you, Katie, for opening your home and sharing it with us. We hope to come back some day soon!

Wonderful Experience in Kona!

  • 5 of 5

Upscale beautiful house with a nice Hawaiian touch. We especially loved the swimming pool. Sure, there are awesome beaches nearby, but being able to swim and look out over that amazing view felt incredible, and the kids had a ton of fun. The house itself was clean, and up to date. It felt big and open, the back door even opens up the whole back of the house to lovely views. Every bedroom was beautiful with very comfortable beds. The kitchen had plenty of spices and all the little things we needed to cook nice meals. We used the grill several times and ate outside on the patio most of the time. It was relaxing and nice. The neighborhood was great and was in a good location. If you like to try local produce you ought to try to make it to Cook's Bounty Fruit stand nearby! I got to try several varieties of dragon fruit and on top of that I had the best mango of my life! There is a cocoa farm nearby as well.

Working with Katie was wonderful. We loved every minute of our stay. We loved the Kona area!

Perfect

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a wonderful 40th anniversary vacation at this spectacular home. The view is simply to die for. We loved counting the boats in the ocean each morning and enjoying the spectacular sunsets each evening.

The home is lovely and was spotless when we arrived. The beds were exceptionally comfortable. We enjoyed the house so much we actually spent more time there than we usually do when we vacation. The neighborhood is equally beautiful and very quiet. The location is excellent to see anything on the big island you like. It was a pleasure to return home each evening after touring the area.

One highlight of our trip was a sunset helicopter tour around the island. The whole flight was spectacular but seeing the lava flowing down to the sea was incredible. The later day time made the red lava easier to see. I highly recommend a helicopter tour if you are in the area.

The owners of the house are wonderful. Katie is a joy to work with and really cares about their guests. A stay at their amazing home is a real treat. I highly recommend this property.

Amazing home!

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week at this gorgeous home celebrating my 60th birthday with our family. There were 5 adults and 2 small children. It was absolutely perfect! While the house looks pretty amazing in these photos, it is even more spectacular in person! The house was immaculate and the furnishing beautiful! The outside area is great. We ate all of our dinners outside, watching the amazing sunset over the ocean. Plenty of staples were provided which was so appreciated. When I contacted Katie before our trip to see if there was a pack 'n play for our one year old grandson, she said that there was not and then bought one to leave for us to use. The owners are very easy to work with. If you are looking for the perfect Kona home to spend your vacation in, this is it!

Our 2nd stay at Hale Keani was even better!

  • 5 of 5

Our family visited The Big Island last year and stayed in this wonderful home. We enjoyed it so much, we returned again! Last year we thought Hale Keani was just absolutely the most comfortable home our Family has rented during our trips to Hawaii, but this year it was even better. The owners, who are a delight to work with and are meticulous about all details of how their home is presented to guests, bought some beautiful outdoor furniture for the lanai. What was also added was an outdoor shower garden off the master bedroom. If you have never showered outdoors in Hawaii, trust me, this was special! From the spectacular weather, the sunsets from the lanai every night with a glass of wine in hand (saw my 1st green flash), and spotting humpback whales spouting and breaching almost every day......life is grand. Kudos to the property owners for sharing Hale Keani with our Family again. We will return!
