About Lionel and Peggy Haines
I am English and my wife is Irish. Although we have been together since 1983 we only got married in 2009 in preparation for our new life together in France.
Lionel and Peggy Haines purchased this Cottage in 2009
Why Lionel and Peggy Haines chose Nant
We used to come on holiday to the region every other year for a long time and the opportunity to live here and make enough money to survive came up. So we have been living here since December 2009 and are enjoying every minute of it. Both of us love the countryside and the wildlife here and in between looking after the gîtes we go for lots of walks. It's a fantastic place to live, come and share it with us!
What makes this Cottage unique
We are surrounded by countryside, both valley scenery and the wild "causse" land above the valley. Boredom is impossible here: we never tire of the scenery from our terraces or driving down the Dourbie valley to Millau. I love to go fishing in the beautiful crystal clear Dourbie trout river if only for "a walk on the wild-side", catching a fish is secondary to watching a beaver swim past or catching a glimpse of a deer or red squirrel drinking from the river while a kingfisher darts by! Peggy, on the other hand prefers having a coffee on dry land, meeting friends and watching village life in nearby Nant.

Wonderful hosts, great location
Before we arrived, we received useful instructions on what to do/where to park/phone number - and this information turned out to be very helpful.
Lionel and Peggy are exceptional hosts. We received a warm welcome, and assistance bringing our luggage to the apartment, where there was a very acceptable bottle of rose waiting for us. The apartment was clean and the beds very comfortable. Lionel and Peggy were always available to help/advise us, but were never intrusive. They took us for a very informative walk in the location and around the interesting village. We were shown native orchids which we would not otherwise noticed. The eagles/vultures could be seen soaring in the sky, but unfortunately we never got close for a good look. Highly recommended place to stay, but 2 nights was not enough. Very close to Millau - the bridge is well worth seeing. Thanks Lionel and Peggy for great stay :)
Cantobre is just an amazing place
The gite was fantastic stuck high on the top of a limestone escarpment. It was clean and spacious, with a fantastic shower that never ran cold. The hosts Lionel and Peggy were very helpful. The view from the rear garden from the top of the mushroom lump of limestone is awesome. If you like wine, just ask Lionel. The walks around Cantobre are fantastic and the air quality lovely. A visit to the Millau town and viaduct is a must, and driving thru the gorges is amazing, you might be lucky enough to get close to flying vultures!
Thanks for your review Ian. It was a pleasure having you stay with us, we hope to see you again later in the year.
Well equipped and comfortable Gite
Although we know Cantobre well, and keep going back, this was our first time in the larger of the two gites. It is comfortable and well equipped in every way.
It was, if anything, larger than the two of us needed - but we booked it because the smaller Gite was already taken. This area is so special to us I hardly want to tell you about it.
Thanks for your review. We actually have a group that have come back to us many times who refuse to give a review because they don't want other people to know about our gites. Thanks for letting it slip out.
Never fails to amaze - our favourite place!
Castel de Cantobre is a magical place to stay in a part of France that never ceases to amaze us with its beautiful and varied scenery, picturesque villages and cultural and historical perspectives. The comfortable accommodation affords stunning views of the valley to the south and a short walk to the top of the gardens provides an amazing vista in all directions - a perfect place to share a bottle of wine or play a game of pétanque (watched by the chickens).
The hosts are never intrusive but always friendly, charming and helpful when needed.
We recommend Castel de Cantobre unreservedly - of all the places we visit, it comes at the top.
It's why we live here. It used to be our favourite holiday destination too.
Thank you for your kind review.
Fantastic Gite and hosts
This is the second time we have stayed with Lionel and Peggy. The gite is wonderful, its clean and well maintained with a lovely veranda to eat meals from with fantastic views of the gorge.
Lionel and Peggy are such wonderful hosts, very knowledgeable and helpful. There is also plenty to do in the area, caves, canoeing walking, visiting Roquefort to see how the cheese is made etc.
The gite has all your need, we mixed our time there eating out or making use of the gites kitchen and using vedge and eggs from the gite. We will certainly return again.
Thanks for the nice review and yes, it's nice to share our eggs and vegetables (when we have some spare) with our guests. I don't think we could buy eggs from a shop ever again, they just don't taste the same. Hopefully this year we'll have a surplus of Peruvian Chillies grown from the seeds of the chillies that you gave to us, thank you.
We hope you can make it back this year, if not then see you next year.
Well appointed house with stunning views
We loved our stay in Cantobre, and this property was a perfect base of operations for exploring the area. The property itself is beautiful, and the house is spotless, with everything you could possibly need for your stay. Lionel and Peggy are so friendly, and go out of their way to make sure you are comfortable—everything from the offer of fresh eggs and produce from their hens and garden, to individual maps of trails to bike and hike, tied out with hand held GPS to take with you. Both are incredibly knowledgeable about what to see and do in the Aveyron. But it’s the sweeping view down the valley from your private veranda that make this spot over the top perfect. We are coming back in 2019 and can’t wait! Sarah & Tom R.
Thank you for your kind review, see you again this year.
A 10 minute walk from our gîtes gets you to a pebble beach on the Dourbie river. Canoeing is possible on the river but canoe hire is at Millau. For Inland water sports the Lac du Salagou is a about an hour's drive to the south and driving a little further south takes you to the beaches of the Mediterranean.
There are several airports which serve the region, the ones that we have used are Rodez, Béziers, Montpellier, Nimes and Carcassonne, car hire is essential.
Driving time from Calais is around 10-11 hours (via Rouen or Paris) including stops and the Eurostar takes you to Paris or Lille and then you take the TGV (same station in Lille but you have to change stations in Paris) to get to Montpellier. We have a web page that shows how to get here, we can send you the link after you make your reservation.
The village of Nant is 6 km up the Dourbie valley, the vibrant market town of Millau with its world renowned viaduct is 27 km down the valley, both are worth the drive in themselves.
Knights Templar villages are within 25 km from us and Roquefort (cheese) is about 40 km away. The Jonte and Tarn Gorges to the north are about 30 - 50 km away and Mont Aigoual (the tallest mountain around) with magnificent views and a weather station open to the public is 35 kms away.
Our Castel de Cantobre website has lots of information, 60 pages of photos of wildlife and the area, activities, local information, wine trips, places to visit and webcams for the valley etc.
