Overview

About the property

Spacious layout, many activities available or just relax.

Authentic Mathews County Fisherman’s Farmhouse located in New Point, VA. This renovated 3 bedroom farmhouse is waterfront on Dyer Creek which opens on to the Chesapeake Bay. Situated on 6 acres next to the Nature Conservancy Preserve makes this rental a nature lover’s paradise. “Bayside at Bavon” is framed between twin mature Magnolia trees. The sweeping front porch has a porch swing and chairs, which make it an ideal spot to drink morning coffee or meet for a cocktail. The wrap-a-round porch leads to a screened back porch ideal for lounging under ceiling fans, grilling today’s catch of the day or watching the boats come in from a day out on the bay. Whether you decide to cook in the well equipped kitchen with rustic beams or eat on the screen porch, the full lite French door makes it easy to entertain guests in either location.

The middle parlor, now a comfortable living room with leather sofas, Heriz rug, Adirondack twig rocking chair and a walnut dry sink is an easy to use room whether you want to read a book or watch a movie. (Flat screen TV only for DVD & AmazonFireStick, no cable). The downstairs full size bath has been finished with nautical charts and an old painted chest with stripped top that has been converted into a charming sink. The shower is extra hot to wash off the day’s excursions or use the deck outdoor shower overlooking the water. The middle upper hall leads to three comfortable size bedrooms and a new full bath with a small washer dryer. Guests must bring their own linens, bath and bed. Bed comforters and pillows provided. The front bedroom features 5 windows with water views and a double size comfortable oak bed. The painted floor hallway leads to the two other bedrooms each equipped with new windows, double beds and a pair of bunk beds ideal for children. Guests provide all linens and bath towels.

“Bayside at Bavon” is an ideal weekend or week retreat for kayak lovers, bird watchers, artists who are looking to capture a photographic image, or a cozy family get-a-away. The rustic charm will put you in touch with nature and wash any stress away. Enjoy an easy 15 minute walk to the overlook which provides easy kayak & canoe launch. A short boat ride leads you to a large white sandy beach overlooking Thomas Jefferson’s New Point Comfort Lighthouse. Although the lighthouse is not open to the public, it gives explorers a historic destination point and you can kayak out to it, if ambitious, (about a 1/4 mile off the beach).

Easy day trips can be made to Colonial Williamsburg, Yorktown, Jamestown, and other historic sites. Charter fishing trips and boat/kayak rentals are available throughout the County. Marinas and public boat ramps are nearby. Busch Gardens and Water Country U.S.A. are about an hour away – but why leave…Mathews is the best kept secret on the Bay!

Mathew Courthouse Village is a quaint town with several restaurants, shopping, Food Lion grocery store, gourmet pizza parlor, antique stores and small boutique shops. Be sure to stop in the Visitor’s Center at Old Sibley’s Store and pick up a copy of the BluewWater Trails or find it on-line. Mathews has 2 public beaches – Haven Beach and Bethel Beach Preserve. More information can be found at Mathews County info site or google them. We are glad to talk about the house and area in detail!

About Nathan Beck

We found this house in Mathews on a Saturday when we decided to look for waterfront property on the prior Wednesday, it was that easy! When we drove through downtown Mathews, even before seeing the house, we knew Mathews was the place for our future getaways. And then it took us about 6 years to rehab the house to it's current state.

Mathews is a special place for those looking for relaxation, peace and to get away form it all to recharge.

Nathan Beck purchased this farmhouse in 2007

Why Nathan Beck chose Port Haywood

We are happy to talk with you about the house and the Mathews area! This is our fourth season (2018) and we have been joyfully overwhelmed by the interest! Every year we update and try to improve the property in various ways.

What makes this farmhouse unique

We have no visible "next door neighbors", (although the neighbors are great). To one side of the property is a Nature Conservancy coastal area, approximately 100 acres. The picture here is just past the house making the 15 minute walk to one of the overlooks facing Mobjack Bay. You can see the Chesapeake Bay too. From the screen back porch "room" 28x16 you can see the Wolf trap lighthouse at night and sometimes during the day. There is much wildlife and on the ground and flying above to watch while on the porch and property!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Enjoyed the deck during a mild temperature stay. Loved walks to the overlook, kayaking behind the property and just relaxing on the screen porch and deck. The town of Mathews has a kayak put-in we visited. And the town restaurants were great.

Beautiful home, relaxing environment.

  • 5 of 5

My family loved everything about out stay at here. Nathan was responsive with communication and the home was exactly as described. We spend the week kayaking exploring the marshes and beaches. It was the perfect opportunity to relax, unplug (even though there is wifi and TV reception), and reconnect.

Lovely private quiet home and land

  • 4 of 5

Old property beautifully furnished with everything we needed in the kitchen. Great screened in porch. Lovely area close to mathes and gwyns, restaurants were outstanding and the farmers market fun. Fun fishing ar the end of the property but not too successful with our crabbing! The mud and the flies were a bit of a pain but this is clearly pointed out in the listing so was no surprise. Beautiful views from the house over the water and a short bicycle ride to the nature preserve. We had a great time

Quaint, quiet and relaxing stay.

  • 5 of 5

Nathan did a great job of accurately describing the house and surrounding property. There's plenty of room in the house for adults and kids to be together as well as spaces for kids to be doing their own activities without adults. Our boys loved the marshy area seeing all the snails and crabs, kayaking and secluded feel. Because there were two adult-sized bikes we only had to bring bikes for the kids which allowed us to get out and leisurely explore other points of the bay. Drove to explore various beaches nearby. Amazing screened and wrap around porches where we enjoyed morning coffee and evening cocktails. Attractive, comfortable, spacious bedrooms. We highly recommend for people with and without kids if you want quiet, privacy and love the outdoors.

Exceptional, private, relaxing, and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

We wanted an escape from the city and the property's kayaks let us explore the beautiful waterways. Or, the screened-in porch let us enjoy it all from a safe bug-free distance when feeling lazy or during some torrential downpours. Well equipped kitchen and gas grill made life easy. Host recommendations were spot on. We hope to come back.

Magical Bay Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

Charming home. Perfectly decorated with every amenity you need for a relaxing time by the water's edge. Canoed to New Point Lighthouse from Dyer's Creek. Rode bicycles to lookout. Listened to live music and had dinner at Southwind Pizza. Canoed and kayaked to sandy beach from Mobjack bay. Visited Bethel Beach and Haven Beach. Drove to Gwynn's Island and also picked up crabs from Sea Farms. This home provided the best hub for all of our activities. Best sunrises and sunsets. Best bird chirping to lull you into a sunny nap on the screened porch. This house is an absolute winner for us. Looking forward to renting it again. Comfortable, cozy, clean, remote, tranquil. A real memory maker. <3<3<3

Wonderful Country Farmhouse

  • 4 of 5

My wife and I enjoyed a much needed relaxing weekend in this wonderful old farmhouse. We enjoyed the bikes, kayaks, and reading on the porch. The walk to the water is as advertised, so be ready. There are mud boots available on the porch.

Downtown Mathews is small quaint and wonderful. It was just what the doctor ordered to get away from the stress of daily life. Thank you for sharing this lovely home.

Owner's Response: Glad you enjoyed! We are changing the path to the water in the next few weeks. We've had more rain than the last hurricane lately, which was 14 years ago!! We plan to have an improved path to include walkways and a video tour to create a better visual picture!!
