Situated on 6 acres next to the Nature Conservancy Preserve makes this rental a nature lover’s paradise. “Bayside at Bavon” is framed between twin mature Magnolia trees. The sweeping front porch has a porch swing and chairs, which make it an ideal spot to drink morning coffee or meet for a cocktail. The wrap-a-round porch leads to a screened back porch ideal for lounging under ceiling fans, grilling today’s catch of the day or watching the boats come in from a day out on the bay. Whether you decide to cook in the well equipped kitchen with rustic beams or eat on the screen porch, the full lite French door makes it easy to entertain guests in either location.
The middle parlor, now a comfortable living room with leather sofas, Heriz rug, Adirondack twig rocking chair and a walnut dry sink is an easy to use room whether you want to read a book or watch a movie. (Flat screen TV only for DVD & AmazonFireStick, no cable). The downstairs full size bath has been finished with nautical charts and an old painted chest with stripped top that has been converted into a charming sink. The shower is extra hot to wash off the day’s excursions or use the deck outdoor shower overlooking the water. The middle upper hall leads to three comfortable size bedrooms and a new full bath with a small washer dryer. Guests must bring their own linens, bath and bed. Bed comforters and pillows provided. The front bedroom features 5 windows with water views and a double size comfortable oak bed. The painted floor hallway leads to the two other bedrooms each equipped with new windows, double beds and a pair of bunk beds ideal for children. Guests provide all linens and bath towels.
“Bayside at Bavon” is an ideal weekend or week retreat for kayak lovers, bird watchers, artists who are looking to capture a photographic image, or a cozy family get-a-away. The rustic charm will put you in touch with nature and wash any stress away. Enjoy an easy 15 minute walk to the overlook which provides easy kayak & canoe launch. A short boat ride leads you to a large white sandy beach overlooking Thomas Jefferson’s New Point Comfort Lighthouse. Although the lighthouse is not open to the public, it gives explorers a historic destination point and you can kayak out to it, if ambitious, (about a 1/4 mile off the beach).
Easy day trips can be made to Colonial Williamsburg, Yorktown, Jamestown, and other historic sites. Charter fishing trips and boat/kayak rentals are available throughout the County. Marinas and public boat ramps are nearby. Busch Gardens and Water Country U.S.A. are about an hour away – but why leave…Mathews is the best kept secret on the Bay!
Mathew Courthouse Village is a quaint town with several restaurants, shopping, Food Lion grocery store, gourmet pizza parlor, antique stores and small boutique shops. About Nathan Beck
We found this house in Mathews on a Saturday when we decided to look for waterfront property on the prior Wednesday, it was that easy! When we drove through downtown Mathews, even before seeing the house, we knew Mathews was the place for our future getaways. And then it took us about 6 years to rehab the house to it's current state. Mathews is a special place for those looking for relaxation, peace and to get away form it all to recharge.
Nathan Beck purchased this Farmhouse in 2007
Why Nathan Beck chose Bavon
We are happy to talk with you about the house and the Mathews area! This is our fourth season (2018) and we have been joyfully overwhelmed by the interest! Every year we update and try to improve the property in various ways.
What makes this Farmhouse unique
We have no visible "next door neighbors", (although the neighbors are great). To one side of the property is a Nature Conservancy coastal area, approximately 100 acres. The picture here is just past the house making the 15 minute walk to one of the "walkable" overlooks facing Mobjack Bay. You can see the Chesapeake Bay too. From the screen back porch "room" 28x16 you can see the Wolf trap lighthouse at night and sometimes during the day. There is much wildlife and on the ground and flying above to watch while on the porch and property!

only negative experience we have had with VRBO
positives: quaint rustic farmhouse - plenty of room
quiet location with privacy
large screen porch
the web site clearly states 2 kayaks – due to weather we were unable to go to the mooring until the 3rd day when we found only 1 kayak. The owner replied that we “missed it” and that it most have blown off the rack in the storm and was lying in the marsh grass. All I can say is that we walked around the area searching and did not see it and checked the water and nearby shore to see if it was sunk or beached nearby. The checkout instructions clearly say to secure the boats – but the only ropes at the mooring were attached to a Hobie cat and rowboat. There was no way to secure the kayaks or canoe. ? maybe someone “borrowed” it?
The description does say that you have to traverse a marsh to access the boats – and boots were provided. However it is a long wet slog and not recommended for the aged or infirm.
We did not feel that the house was properly maintained as a rental:
• There were several burned out light bulbs and we could find only 1 spare bulb
• The screen porch had large hole in the screen that looked like it had been there for some time
• The front door knob kept falling off
• The refrigerator was clean but stank
• The dishwasher sounded like a jet engine [annoying] but the real problem was that the lower basket had only enough prongs to wash 4 dishes
• There was no dish drying rack at the sink so items were stacked on towels to dry
• The silverware drawer slides were broken and the drawer couldn’t be opened all the way
• The gas grill was filthy with baked on food and rust, and a nasty greasy cleaning pad on the shelf
• The owner refunded our security deposit but did note that there was damage to a chest in one of the bedrooms. [did not state which bedroom] We stayed in the master bedroom which did have a chest which we did not open and we didn’t notice anything [our daughter and son in law stayed in the middle bedroom and we don’t remember seeing a chest there. As stated the farmhouse was rustic and the furniture was well worn so ???
Basically – we had no complaints about “rustic” but as a VBRO the maintenance was subpar – and for us the missing kayak was a major downer.
I visited the property the day before this check-in and after check-out. I always check the refrigerator. The kayaks were there (after check-out - one was off the rack and onsite), light switches (all working-I checked) are labeled, but not always read, chest of drawers are in 2 of 3 bedrooms and item mentioned is a blanket box in the living room. Cheers and please read prior reviews!
A wonderful time had by all, more eagles than seagulls
We were aware we had to bring around bedding and bath towels, but no kitchen towels in the kitchen were very hard to adapt to, as we like to wash your own dishes every night especially the big stuff when doing lots of cooking, the silverware drawer needs to be fixed underneath as each time we pulled it out we thought it would land on the floor, that did not happen, found the rain boots after the fact when we were leaving, very large puddle with the rain near the drive area should have better drainage or raised so that you don't get soaked when walking to the car, overall it was A grand time was had by all we will definitely be back, The 30 day return on the deposit seems to be too long other places are 1 to 2 weeks that should be adjusted. The front doors needed to be latched as the wind would blow them open and the door knobs should be replaced as they do not close the door securely, originals are a nice touch but should be updated.
We plan on off-season work to drainage - thank you. Will get dish towels there too! Thanks for the feedback!
Clean, quiet, leisurely, and fun exploring
We had a great time on this trip. Enjoyed kayaking (boots came in handy) and fishing, local pier for crabbing, and used the crab traps. Found a small shaded, shallow beach as recommended by someone in the general store. Ate at the cafe and family restaurant in town, both delicious. Loved the porches and home setup was great for meals, play area, TV area, and game nights. Beds are really comfortable, only problem was some ceiling leaking in one of the bedrooms. Definitely bring boots or water shoes for the kids to walk down to the kayaks. Also bring lots of bug spray. Great trip overall!
Theses folks were great and thanks for the quick and timely notification on the roof maintenance issue!
Big Rustic Away from the Hustle
Loved staying in this beautiful and cozy home! The area was laid back and the perfect get-a-way! The only draw back was that the walkway to the creek out back was too wet and we were unable to access the water there the entire visit. The mud sucked you in up to your knees. So no kayaking! However, we found plenty of small beaches to enjoy! Loved the small towns too!
To future guests - this summer has been much more wet than recent past years. We took immediate action after this party checked out and moved the stepping stones to an undisturbed and less soft area to make water access easier. This area is still affected by tides and storms here next to the Chesapeake Bay. Cheers!
The home was very comfortable and our stay was restful.
It was fantastic.
