We found this house in Mathews on a Saturday when we decided to look for waterfront property on the prior Wednesday, it was that easy! It is a special place for those looking for relaxation, peace and to get away form it all to recharge.
Nathan Beck purchased this farmhouse in 2007
Call with any questions before renting. We are happy to talk with you about the house and the Mathews area! This is our second season and we have been joyfully overwhelmed by the interest!
We have no visible "next door neighbors", (although the neighbors are great). To one side of the property is a Nature Conservancy coastal area, approximately 100 acres. The picture here is just past the house making the 15 minute walk to one of the "walkable" overlooks facing Mobjack Bay. You can see the Chesapeake Bay too. From the screen back porch "room" 28x16 you can see the Wolf trap lighthouse at night every 15 seconds. There is much wildlife and on the ground and flying above to watch while on the porch and property!
Enjoyed the deck during a mild temperature stay. Loved walks to the overlook, kayaking behind the property and just relaxing on the screen porch and deck. The town of Mathews has a kayak put-in we visited. And the town restaurants were great.
This property was a great place to sit back and relax. Amenities were nicer than anticipated for an older house. Our favorite room was the ample screened-in back porch. It was lovely to sit out there on a rainy morning!
Mr. Beck was very responsive to all of our questions. The house is a neat, old farmhouse, typical of early 1900s Port Haywood. Great, old wooden floors, rough-sawn wood beams in the kitchen, low ceilings and door ways, etc. So very charming and reminds you of great-grandma's home. Drove up at dusk and saw an 8-point buck in the yard. Loved the porch swings on looking the old, magnolia trees. Very private and close to the park and lighthouse. No TV channels, which we were aware of, but that was one reason we rented the home. Wanted to spend quiet, family time together, playing games, walking, dominoes, cards, foosball, etc. Great, relaxing time and exactly what our soul needed. Just wish we could have spent more days there.
Even though the storm Hermione had dropped by we enjoyed our stay. We spent most of our time on the screened porch playing games, eating and enjoying each others company and the view. It was very peaceful but not to far from Mathews.
We returned to this house once again this year, and it's even better than it was before. They've done an amazing job continuing to improve the property, with a new bathroom upstairs and so many other details. It's such a relaxing home, and was very much enjoyed by the kids and adults in our group. It's not far at all to get to several different bay beaches, water accesses or boat docks. And you get the feeling that you're at your own country cottage, and not at some cookie cutter beach mansion. Love hanging out on the big screen porch. We very much look forward to returning again next year!
Our stay was with our grandsons, 8 and 14 years old, their parents, our adult son and my husband and I.
The 3 bedrooms were adequate with the air-conditioning units in the windows. The air-conditioning on the first floor was barely adequate during the heat of the day. Our stay was in August with high heat and high humidity outside, which is typical for that time of year on the Chesapeake Bay . The screened in porch on the back of the house was large and could have been wonderful. The screens needed some repair, so we needed to buy wasp spray to keep them at bay. There was already an empty can in the kitchen of wasp spray, so we were not the first to experience this. Our grandson was stung by something we did not recognize in the kitchen. As a result we sprayed around the window air conditioner in the kitchen which seemed to be not completely sealed off. We were fortunate, that our grandson had no reaction to the bite.
The property was wonderful for rest and relaxation. We enjoyed the kayaking, even brought our tandem kayak. The public access to a swimming beach was 30 minutes away by car. We did one day kayak to a beach recommended at the tourist center. FUN! The bicycles were great. We picked figs from a very old fig tree in the back yard, charming. Lots of privacy on the property is a plus.
I would give the rating of 4 stars because, I think, that there needs to be more attentions to minor repairs. The house was very clean however. Restaurants in the area were good, some needed reservations, which surprised us.
We had a lovely long weekend in Matthews County with our friends and 4 small kids. The house is a good amount of space with lovely character and is decorated well. We loved the screen porch. We'd hoped to take advantage of the kayaks, but at Nathan warned us, it's quite a long slog through the mud at low tide to get to them - didn't work for our kiddos who would have been in up mud up to their waists! But we enjoyed daytrips to nearby beaches where we looked for creatures and were generally among only one or two other families on the beach. Given the time of year it was pretty buggy - including voracious deer flies - but that par for the course in summer. Overall we enjoyed our visit to the area and were glad to be in such an interesting environment (spider crabs everywhere!)
