It has one bedroom (king bed), two bath rooms, small kitchenette area and living room/dining area with a small flat screen TV. It has a futon couch and sleeps a total of up to four. This is a great cottage for a couples get away. From the screened in porch that you can see all the action of our property or just take a nap on the day bed. It is a wonderful place to fully enjoy all that the Adirondacks have to offer!
We offer plenty of parking for vehicles, boats and their trailers, cable television, Wi-Fi, campfire pit, and charcoal grill. Swim area with floating dock, deep water to accommodate 25' power boat dock, and sandy beach are available for no additional charge between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

All well behaved pets are welcome at Birchwood! Small pet fee is extra. We do ask that they remain leashed at all times while on our property. Please pick up after your pets indoors and outdoors. We prefer that they remain downstairs if staying in the Lodge and off the beds/furniture in all units (as to help keep allergens to a minimum). Due to NYS Department of Health regulations, dogs are not allowed at the beach, in the designated swim area. We do however, have plenty of lakefront shoreline for dogs to enjoy, docks to jump from and some shallow exit areas as well. If you are using Birchwood as a base for a day trip, we ask that you take your pet with you. If that's not possible, we'd be more than happy to recommend a local "pet day care". Leaving your pet behind without supervision is not permitted. We don't want them to be frightened or rowdy while you're away -- after all they should enjoy vacation as well.
Additional cottages available on property for the extended family that wants their own space at additional cost. Rec Room is open to all Birchwood guests.

Brett - we're so glad you were able to enjoy your stay at Birchwood and the beautiful leaves this time of year! We'd gladly have you back...looking forward to it!
We booked a last minute trip and was not disappointed! The private, fully furnished cabin was perfect for our weekend get away. They also have boats, kayaks, paddle boards and so much more down at the beach free to use. The manager was so quick to respond to our questions/concerns and the check in/check out was SO simple. We definitely found our new place to go yearly, highly recommend!

Victoria - we are so glad you were able to make your last minute get away work for you! Thank you for the kind words, and description of our amenities...it truly is a special place, and we'd love to have you back!
Loved the location. Checkin ran late due to prior people leaving a mess, but they were apologetic. Hot water tank light went out, but they fixed it right away. Bed was super comfortable.

Heather - thank you so much for choosing Birchwood for your get away!! We truly appreciate your understanding of things that are beyond our control in regards to the timing and the water tank pilot, and we are grateful for your open communication so we could resolve it in a timely manner. We hope if you come back to the Adirondacks for a lake getaway, you think of us - we'd love to have you again!
Arrived around 5 on Saturday. Great location. Once I figured out how to open key holder, we moved in. We enjoyed our cabin, found the information folders helpful. We had a nice fire and enjoyed our stay. Our suggestions for improvement. The light in the main room was very bright. A dimmer light switch would have been appreciated. Would like to have had a reading light on both sides of the bed.

Denise, we're so glad you chose Birchwood for your stay and were able to soak in all the wonderfulness that the Adirondacks can offer (and visit with your son)! We appreciate your feedback, and are glad that we could make your trip an enjoyable and comfortable one!
Thank you!
Overall, no major issues. But, cleanliness was a bit poor, extremely difficult to cook with just a poorly functioning hot plate and a toaster oven. Shower's were, well, not normally somewhere I'd step into. That was hard. We actually had bring pots and pans. Bedding isn't fully provided and what was was stained and smelled of body oils. But the location is great except for the busy road and road noise. The lake is lovely, still, but has become very crowded over the years. Lastly, the Carbon Monoxide detector is mounted high on the wall. By the time it goes off to alert anyone, it'll be too late. Move it to below sleeping head height.

Bill - we do thank you for choosing Birchwood for your cottage getaway. Our units are cleaned to CDC / BOH guidelines, but if something was not up to par with your standards, we hoped you would reach out to us or our onsite caretakers immediately, and we could have had our cleaning company come back immediately to rectify the situation. As is listed in our VRBO unit description and email instructions / reminders - unit #2 is an efficiency unit (with no stove), we state this specifically, so no renters are surprised upon arrival that they do not have a full kitchen in this unit. We also state clearly that sheets and towels are not provided and need to be brought in. As far as the CO detector - we have the NYS fire and safety inspection every year (and pass), the CO detectors are placed exactly where they should be, as indicated by our inspector. Since carbon monoxide is slightly lighter than air, and also because it may be found with warm rising air - it is to be placed on a wall at least 5 feet above the floor, or on the ceiling. We do hope overall you enjoyed your mountain lake getaway in the midst of these trying times.
Thank you!
About the host
Hosted by Patrick McGowan
About the Owners: Birchwood Cottages is family owned and operated by Patrick and Margo McGowan, under our LLC, ADK Birchwood. Patrick & Margo McGowan have loved the Adirondack Park for decades and had been searching for the perfect spot to make their own in the Adirondacks. Margo and Patrick have always been drawn to the park; they were engaged in Brant Lake (just down the road) and married in Lake Placid, and vacationed in the ADKs just about every year since then. They have become quite the Adirondack groupies, scouring property and vacationing in various spots within the blue line for years and years, it was time to put down some roots.
Why they chose this property
How we came to love Birchwood: Margo had known about Birchwood Cottages for about 15 years, as she went to college with the previous owners daughter, and had visited Birchwood a few times throughout her college days. In years passed, she had always toyed with the idea of buying Birchwood – but considered it pipe dreams at best. In the summer of 2015, the McGowan’s came to Birchwood to have a mini college reunion with her friends and classmates, and it was then, that the timing was right to call Birchwood home! After a quick discussion with Art and Jill Spierre, and a seemingly short drive for Jen and Steve to check the place out, a handshake sealed the deal. The Hazelton’s and McGowan’s spent the summer back and forth to Birchwood, and in discussions with Art and Jill, and were finally able to call Birchwood theirs in September 2015. In 2020, Margo and Patrick made another leap and purchased the Hazelton's shares of the LLC.
Our goal is to keep Birchwood as a family friendly vacation spot for our loyal guests AND NEW ONES, so they too, can call Birchwood home (if even for a week or 2) for years and years to come!
What makes this property unique
Birchwood Cottages is a delightful set of cottages, and one large main house (The Lodge), settled on the north-west shore of Loon Lake surrounded by the Adirondack Mountains. Our roped swimming area is easily accessible by steps that lead to a sandy gradual walk-in, and include a floating dock.
Loon Lake is a nicely tucked away little treasure in Chestertown, NY. There are multitudes of activities to do for a day trip- or never leave the beach- which ever you prefer. Full service marina located across the lake for all of your boating needs, and our large boat docks can accommodate any size boat!
