Masseria San Michele is a completely unique stone masseria, parts of which are medieval in origin. Tastefully restored the large and luxuxy four/five bedroom four bathroom property offers discerning guests the opportunity to enjoy the relaxed Puglian lifestyle. The property was featured in the Daily Mail newspaper 'Perfect Puglia' and is situated at the end of an impressive drive in over 5 acres of grounds with extensive areas of gardens and olive trees. The beautiful large pool (15.5.x.6 m) has covered cabanas on which to relax, a large covered dining area and external kitchen and barbeque. This unique property offers total privacy and seclusion but gives very easy access to the vibrant and charming Puglian town of Ceglie Messapica, famed for its restaurants. The house and grounds are family friendly, and the house is comfortably and stylishly furnished and offers very spacious living areas and modern facilities. A veranda leads off the original 'cantina' of the house. The cantina is the heart of the house, where our guests like to congregate around the large dining table. One of the main highlights of the property is the beautiful garden, unique in the area with hundreds of varieties of mediterranean and dry garden plants. Private cook, olive oil and wine tasting, local guides and and cycling tours can arranged for you

About Ian Campbell-Smith
I am often in Italy for my work and I originally wanted to find a small trullo to restore for myself and family to enjoy quiet holidays together. When I saw this grand house at the end of its long private drive I fell in love immediately, and despite being three times the size of a trullo and probably much more money than I could afford I set my heart on it. Because of its listed status and much bureaucracy I had to wait the best part of a year until the house was finally ours. One and a half years and much stress and hard work later the huge project to restore the house, un-lived in for thirty years, was completed. Now I consider this my true home, the locals my friends and I delight in being able to share the house with others.
Ian Campbell-Smith purchased this House in 2005
Why Ian Campbell-Smith chose Ceglie Messapica
I love this area of Italy for its simplicity and friendly, open hearted people. It is no wonder the Italians themselves choose this particular area of Puglia for their own summer holidays: fantastic weather, great fresh local food and produce and a choice of beautiful beaches with sparklingly clear water.
What makes this House unique
For me, it is a privilege to own this unique property and I often have to pinch myself to think how lucky I am! I love the sense of history attached to the house and the fact that I am only the present custodian. How lucky too that we are under five minutes drive to the town if we have forgotten to buy something or need to go to the bank, and yet from the roof terrace it is clear we are really in the country, surrounded by what seems like thousands of olive trees as far as the eye can see. Our guests have genuinely enjoyed staying in this amazing house, and always comment about the amazing pool and the day beds on which to laze the day away.

Beautiful space with incredible charm
We spent a week at Masseria San Michele this summer. The home is exquisite with breath taking beautifully kept grounds. The grotto is something my family will never forget. Maria met us at the house and was incredibly gracious and available by text whenever we had a question or need. One evening her lovely mother cooked for us and it was a feast. We spend a lot of time in Italy but this was our first trip to Puglia and we were struck by the stark beauty and the generosity of the people. We can't wait to return.
A beautiful and luxurious house with a family friendly feel and great pool in an interesting area with good beaches and brilliant restaurants if you do your research. All our party of eight aged 26 -
60+ loved it!
It was very well equipped and the gardens were especially good with lots of places to sit and enjoy the fig and olive trees and mediterranean planting. A little sneaky peak of paradise!
lovely property with stunning grounds
would have preferred heated pool as I like to swim early in the morning and it was too cold.
Our escape to the Puglia tranquility !
This is our second stay at this beautiful home in Puglia. What a delight it was to enter those gates again knowing what lay in store for us. The house description doesn't tell you of the unique experience of staying within these walls. It fed our souls & relaxed our hearts with emotions from the moment we arrived . A beautiful house set in rustic acres of land, ancient olive trees & the feel of time stood still. The delight on closing those big wooden gates behind us ,looking towards the Monastery & the bright blue pool surrounded with chamomile plants ,Cacti & lavender. Within the house is a cool beautifully furnished place to sit & relax & just take in the eclectic stylish carefully chosen furniture & pieces around the house. The crockery, glassware all the beautiful little touches that pleased our senses. Oh the the many times people must say I " wish this were mine !" It was ours for if only for a week ,every piece of of this wonderful house & land to wander. Every day to to eat alfresco ,cook , swim forage & smell the herbs. Every day we would walk the land & stroll around picking dried walnuts & fresh fruit taking in the smells & senses. We felt a million miles from our mad city lifestyle. Evenings eating out in local but for sure the best of Puglia restaurants, recommended by the owners. But for us we loved eating at home, shopping & choosing many local products as our holiday bounty. The choices for our all morning lazy breakfasts on the outside dining area shaded & a chance to see our surrounds froma different angle. Our late lunches when we moved to the pool area with its fantastic outdoor kitchen & shady dining area. Swimming, lazing & feasting our days away in such a rural setting. Yet 10 minutes to the town so we can shop for fresh bread, cakes & fruit each morning. We spent our days as if in a different life it was an experience of something special it gave us back time & a place to be simple & to chat & just to look around & feel something which we are always seeking on our vacations. Thank you Ian & Dimas for letting us be a part of your idyllic Puglia home.
Absolutely stunning villa situated just outside a gorgeous little Italian town with food to dine for. Recommend to anybody, particularly families looking for a complete retreat
Fantastic property in a superb location
We had a wonderful week at Masseria San Michele, what a beautiful home among incredible surroundings. The house, gardens and pool were beyond our expectations, all in very good condition and well equipped with all your holiday essentials (down to every herb in the garden!). Conveniently located to explore Puglia, and excellent restaurants in arms reach. We'll be back!
The Adriatic coast is 25 minutes drive where there is a wide choice of beaches, from secluded coves with aquamarine waters to long sandy beaches backed by dunes. Some beaches provide facilities that make them perfect for families. The Ionian coast is around 30 minutes drive on the other side of the peninsula. There you will find mile upon mile of stunning white sandy beaches and crystal clear waters.
Brindisi airport is 30 minutes and Bari airport is 1 hour 10 minutes. Both are served by Ryanair as well as Alitalia/Air One which offers comfortable and reasonably priced flights from the UK with short connections in Rome or Milan. EasyJet and BA flies directly to Bari (1 hour 10 minutes) from London Gatwick. A hire car is recommended so that you can explore the delightful area surrounding the house.
The medieval town of Ceglie Messapica is 2km (5 minutes) where there all amenities from delightful restaurants and stores serving and selling locally grown and raised products; supermarkets; banks and many festivals during the summer. Nearby and within easy driving distance of the property are many fascinating towns such as Ostuni, the White City; Alberobello a Unesco site famed for its trulli dwellings; Martina Franca a sophisticated Baroque town and Lecce, the 'Florence of the South'.
Puglia offers a taste of a simple life that has been forgotten in our frenetic times, with an easy going charm that is making this once quiet peninsula a firm favourite for holiday makers. The relaxed way of life here combined with the abundant fresh local food makes a holiday here both calming and memorable.
Ceglie Messapica is a charming small town of white washed houses and narrow streets located in the province of Brindisi, on the edge of the Valle Itria, famous for its Trullis. The captivating landscape here is typical of the area: dry-stone walls, olive groves, vineyards, and woods with ancient oaks.
Puglia is considered one of the best places to eat in Italy by the Italians, and Ceglie Messapica is considered one of the best places to eat in Puglia! There are many restaurants in Ceglie from simple trattoria to Michelin starred affairs. Many of them will offer some version of what is known as 'Cucina Povera', literally 'poor cooking' derived from a time when the residents of this area of Italy had to make do with simple ingredients and transform them into something more than the sum of its parts.
Restaurants and bars, shops supermarkets and banks are all within 5 minutes drive. Riding facilities nearby. Sailboat rental available nearby as well as yacht charter in Taranto. Many local markets. Fascinating festivals to enjoy during the balmy summer evenings. Enchanting Baroque towns and fairy tale trulli dwellings. Tasting sessions at local vineyards where ever more appreciated wines are produced.
