Converted chapel, private heated pool in Loubes Bernac, Nr.Duras, Lot et Garonne, Aquitaine, France - Ideal Location For The Dordogne River, Wine Tasting And Night Markets
About James Linton
Having studied at Sheffield University and had engineering and I.T. companies in the UK, a gradual transition into property development led to the purchase of the ruined chapel in Loubes Bernac in 2011. With only one wall and a swimming pool to start with, the renovation took three years to complete and now provides an ideal holiday location.
James Linton purchased this House in 2011
Why James Linton chose Loubès-Bernac
Set in the north of the Lot-et-Garonne, I'd previously had properties in the Dordogne area, but wanted to venture further south for a mildly better climate and different surroundings. I found the ruined chapel on an internet site and decided it was the perfect project. Three years later it has been transformed into a lovely property in the heart of a quiet French village and makes a convenient and unique holiday location.
What makes this House unique
A converted chapel with hand made stain glass windows based on Matisse drawings. A unique open plan space downstairs with 5.2 meter patio doors opening out onto a patio area with a heated pool. Set in a quiet French village with a shop which is open seven days a week and an excellent restaurant. Conveniently located near to Bergerac Airport and one hour from Bordeaux.

Coming from rural Wiltshire we are used to quiet, but this holiday situation was perfect for its peaceful outlook on the edge of a small village but with the advantage of a small and handy shop and sweet restaurant. In the middle weekend of our stay the village fete took place which allowed for great fun and much people watching, it included a gargantuan French traditional meal with wine in the village square for about 300 people and some fairly interesting lawn mower racing the following day. The house is beautiful with Matisse inspired stain glass windows coupled with fresh and modern accommodation, a lovely kitchen to cook in and a perfect eating space inside and outside. The pool was lovely as was the comfortable seating around and we were able to read and relax and sightsee and shop in this gorgeous part of France. I would wholeheartedly recommend La Chapelle, all details for a perfect stay had been covered and it was blissful. Thanks James
Brilliant Holiday Destination
Beautifully converted building with all modern conveniences and a great atmosphere. Local area very attractive and peaceful, small shop close by for essential supplies with large supermarket at Ste Foy le Grande. All in all a great holiday so we have booked again for next year!
Our stay at La Chapelle was fabulous, we had the most restful and relaxing break with our 2 children! The renovation has been completed to the very highest standard and it was a very comfortable place to stay with everything catered for. The location was good with the most glorious countryside and vineyards. Communications with the owner were very efficient. Highly recommended.
Many thanks Steve and Vicky et al. See you next year! Best regards, James.
Fab amazing place
La chapelle is a amazing place to stay, the accommodation is finished to such a high standard with everything you could need for a relaxing and fun holiday. Family of 6 of us stayed and had a brilliant time. James and Emma where really helpful and clearly take a lot of pride in this wonderful place. We would happily stay again and recommend to friends. The small village is also great with a very well stocked local shop where you can get fresh bread everyday. The location is also great for the airport and vineyards which we frequented often!
The perfect sanctuary
It was an absolute pleasure to have stayed at La Chapelle on holiday. It is an outstanding holiday home, in a peaceful and idyllic setting. The owner had thought of and provided everything we could have possibly needed to ensure that our stay was a really relaxing experience. We have returned home with some lovely memories of La Chapelle that is, undoubtedly, the perfect sanctuary. Thank you so much.
The nearest beach to the property is at Arcachon which is 2hrs drive away. Ten minutes from Arcachon is the Dune de Pyla, the highest sand dune in Europe and well worth a visit. The coastal town of Biarritz is 3hrs SW by car.
The chapel is situated 25 mins from Bergerac airport (Flybe/Ryanair) and 1hr 15mins from Bordeaux airport (Easyjet/BA). If driving from Calais, it is 8hrs 30mins, or from Caen it is 6hrs 30mins. The TGV high-speed train passes through Libourne with a connection to St Foy le Grande, 10 km from the property.
The chapel is situated in the heart of the village of Loubes Bernac. The town of Duras is 9km south and Bergerac is 20km north east. The Dordogne river is just 10km away at St Foy le Grande and provides an ideal location for water activities such as canoeing. The famous wine producing town of St Emilion is 50km west of the chapel.
The village has a shop that provides foodstuffs and essential items, including fresh bread and croissants, 7 days a week. There is also a Post Office and a hairdresser.
A bar/restaurant is a 30 second walk form the chapel, with lunchtime and evening menus available. They also have a delicatessen, so food is available to purchase over the counter..
Approximately 1.5kms away is the internationally famous Buddhist meditation centre, Plum Village. The chapel would be an ideal location for anyone attending a course at the Village.
