About the property

This 2 BR+ 2 BA Cottage sleeps six people and welcomes up to two dogs

Nestled in the quiet woods on Oak Island and within street view of the Intracoastal Waterway, Snapper Cottage offers a spacious layout and is loaded with amenities to make your visit as easy, comfortable and enjoyable as possible.

Relax on the platform deck under the Oak tree draped in Spanish Moss, or take an afternoon nap on the screened-in back porch. At night, when it's quiet on the island, you can hear the ocean waves in the distance and see millions of stars in the darkness.

Newly renovated, the living room, dining area and kitchen have an open floor plan. Relax on the sofa, turn on some music and stir up the ambiance with a very realistic electric fireplace. Too hot for fire in the summer? No problem! Turn off the heat control, and enjoy watching the flames in the central air conditioning.

We have a large flat screen TV with a DVD player, along with extended television cable services. We also have with several family friendly movies in our DVD library. You can easily connect your laptop to the TV to stream your own programs on the big screen. If you need to work, there's also a small desk for your use.

The kitchen is fully equipped to prepare, cook and serve meals. Included in the kitchen: Refrigerator, glass top cooking stove and oven, dishwasher, microwave, toaster oven, coffee maker, food processor, and blender. We have stainless steel pots and pans, pyrex baking and serving dishes, serving utensils, knives and cutting boards, a knife sharpener, whisks, spatulas, stirring spoons, spatulas, a colander, salad spinner, corkscrew and a bottle cap opener. There are plenty of plates, bowls, cups, glasses, wine glasses, and silverware.

There are two bedrooms, both with memory foam mattresses. We provide sheets, pillows, and quilts. The two beds in the bedrooms will be made up when you get here. The master bedroom has a king sized bed. It also has a large closet which can be used to tuck away your luggage, or perhaps even for a quiet place to set up the playpen or a portable crib.

The second bedroom has a queen sized bed. There is also queen sized sofa bed in the living room, and there is also a memory foam mattress topper to make the pull out bed just as comfortable as the beds in the bedroom. If you need it, there's also a folding twin sized cot with a memory foam mattress. Sheets, blankets and extra pillows for the sofa bed and twin cot are also provided.

Both bathrooms are full baths, with both a shower and a tub. We also have a washer and dryer in the closet in the hallway. We also provide a set of bath towels and a beach towel for each guest. There are also extra towels in the hall closet for your dog.

Your dogs will love our fenced in backyard, and you'll love the ease of letting them out without having to go out with them. We ask that you to clean up your dog's solid waste, along with a $50 pet fee for each dog.

We strive to keep the cottage clean and fresh for everyone who visits-including for our guests without dogs. We apologize for the inconvenience, but due to our insurance restrictions, we are not allowed to accommodate Rottweilers, Dobermans and German Shepherds unless the dog is a service animal.

We provide a small supply of paper towels, toilet paper, trash bags, dish soap, dishwasher detergent, and laundry detergent for your stay. We also offer a full sized Graco pack and play, a high chair, along with plenty of games and books.

If you are bringing a boat, there is plenty of parking here to accommodate it, both on the property and along the right of ways on the street. We are located less than a quarter mile from the 14th St NE Waterway Park on Yacht Drive, which is a great place to launch kayaks, have a picnic, or to go fishing. There is a small gazebo where you and several others can get out of the sun and relax on the benches. From spring to fall you'll love watching the ships, sailboats, and fishing boats go by. If you're lucky you might spot the occasional dolphin swimming, or possibly one of the smaller cruise ships.

Of course, there's the beach. It's a 0.9 mile walk through the nature trail to reach the closest beach access on foot, or a 1.4 mile drive to the closest beach access by car.

Don't overlook going through the nature trail over the marshes and Davis Canal. It may be your favorite walk ever! This area has most scenic nature spots on the island, and you can only see it on foot or by boat. At the beginning of the bridge, there's also another spot to launch your kayak. It's also a fantastic place for watching sunrises and sunsets, along with spotting birds such as pelicans, hawks, cranes and great blue Herons. The water bridge trail cuts straight through and over the marshes of the brackish Davis Canal, between two rows of beach houses, and leads you straight to the 9th Place beach access.

Finally, our cottage is family owned and operated. We live just down the road and can be easily reached for assistance. We also recommend visiting our website to learn all about what our area offers and the things to do and see here. We hope to see you soon!

About Melonie Dappie

After a life of moving up and down the east coast, my husband and I finally decided that I was going to settle in my favorite place. Having spent my summer vacations along most of NC's shore, I chose Oak Island for it's laid back atmosphere, the natural beauty and wilderness, along with a close proximity to a larger city (Wilmington), located just 45 minutes away.

Melonie Dappie purchased this cottage in 2013

Why Melonie Dappie chose Tranquil Harbour

I chose not to live right on the beach for several reasons. I enjoy my quiet and privacy and didn't want to be in the middle of everything during the vacation rush, while also aware being aware of the potential catastrophes that a hurricane could bring. I settled roughly right in the middle of the island, perched on a slight hill near the IntraCoastal Waterway. It's close enough to walk or ride bikes to the beach, and you can't beat the scenic path of taking the nature trail bridge over Davis Canal and the marshes. There's also the waterfront park, located along the Intracoastal Waterway, less than a quarter mile away. There you can fish (with a license), launch your kayaks, have a picnic, or take your dog for a run around the park. My place has the best of it all!

What makes this cottage unique

Even though my cottage is not located right on the ocean, it's still within earshot of it when southern winds are blowing in our direction. There is something almost magical about sitting on the platform deck, under the huge Oak tree draped in Spanish moss, while you hear the waves crashing and the birds singing among themselves on the island. There's a peace and tranquility that can overcome you as experience life here. I've put my heart and soul into turning Snapper Cottage to what it is today. Special attention has been given to the important details, comfort, convenience and beauty. As a plus, and a rarity on the island, our cottage has only a few steps outside to gain access inside. There's no flights of stairs to have to drag all your luggage or groceries inside. This makes it easier for people with limited mobility and saves your back in the process! Finally, it's no secret that staying right on the beach is wildly expensive. If you don't mind a walk or bike ride, you can save a substantial amount on your vacation costs by staying further back from the beach. Of course, if you're not able to walk or ride, it's only a 1.2 mile drive to the nearest beach access where there is plenty of free parking.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I was very impressed with Snapper Cottage - spic and span clean - well decorated in a whimsical way - love the bathroom bowl sinks, beds were big and comfortable, shower/bathtub had great drainage and good pressure, the owner had a pitcher of brita water (nice touch) in the frig - very dog friendly, all wood-like flooring, fenced in backyard, and a close walk to a "doggie" park on yacht drive. There is a Food Lion and a few coffee shops, but no Starbucks! The Fort Fisher ferry ride is a must from Southport, only $5 one way - sure beats driving the long about way (to the Aquarium and Carolina Beach). I love the waterfront park in Southport with all the bench swings, views, people, and shops. Think I had a nice time!!! Great cottage for sure.

p.s. I like the combination entry - better than keys - good system.

Our host, Melonie, has really thought of everything to make her cottage a charming and relaxing place to get away. I loved the decorations and all the special touches. We had a wonderful time here and hope to stay again sometime.

June 2018

The property was as expected and very comfortable. Loved the sofa! We didn't use it to sleep on. Just to chill and relax. The location is perfect. The one thing I would add is a golf cart for us older people or at least provide information about rentals. They were sold out by the time of our stay.

We were surprised by the deer. They ate the flowers on the front deck! They were so pretty and they ate them. I will definitely recommend the house and return next year!

Perfect spot for a quiet get-away!

  • 5 of 5

Snapper Cottage was exactly as described and exactly what we needed. Clean, comfortable, and well appointed. We enjoyed exploring the area on the bikes provided. (Although, we might suggest you bring a gel seat cover!) We also enjoyed morning coffee and post-beach cocktails out front. We can't wait to come back! Thanks!
