About Joan A. Thacher
I have lived in the area since 1978 but am originally from Oakland, California. I instantly fell in love with Southern Utah! The landscape is like nowhere on earth and the sky is so blue you'll wonder if it's real! I love the outdoors and always have. I love gardening, hiking, walking the dogs and rockhounding. If you're a rockhound this is the place for you! My husband and I love riding our motorcycle through Zion National Park! I worked for many years in drug and alcohol prevention education and now am part-owner in the local pet store. We'd love to have you stay at Mom's and we can guide you to all the out-of-the-way places nearby.
Joan A. Thacher purchased this House in 2005
Why Joan A. Thacher chose Kanab
Mom's Place is actually that - my Mom's House. She moved next door to us from Walnut Creek, CA in 2006 after my Dad died. She moved all her lovely furniture and belongings into this charming single story home. We were very lucky to have her here for ten years before she passed away last year. Kanab is a much safer place to live than California!
What makes this House unique
You'll love the layout of the home. First, everything is wheelchair accessible. The livingroom/diningroom is light and spacious. The master bedroom has a "retreat" room which we use as a TV/sitting area. You can sit on the front porch and enjoy the quiet with views of the Vermillion cliffs.

Great place , friendly folks ,thought of everything.
This is a great place to stay..We met Joan the owner on the property.
.A very friendly lady ,and informative. She thought of everything you might need
for your stay.Very clean and comfortible.
Kanab is central to all the canyons we wanted to see .The area is beautiful and interesting. Joan suggested we should come one year in the fall.
We would definately stay here again.
Mom's Place felt just like home
Our seven night stay was just perfect. Joan provided everything one could possibly
need. Brochures for the many attractions were laid out for us to go over -- there
is so much to do in the area. Local hikes as well as national parks.
Mom's Place was clean and tidy. The property was pleasant and well maintained.
We would definitely return. Thank you Joan and Al,

Beautiful, gracious home, owner thought of everything
This is a beautiful, gracious home with spacious rooms. It's hard to tell how large the rooms are in photos. Large master and bathroom. Roomy second bedroom, all tastefully decorated. The owner has thought of everything you might need. It's easy to feel at home here and the home is clean. The concrete and maintenance free decking outside is lovely, as are the yard decorations. It's a super nice property. From here, you can go to several national parks and state parks and also to Lake Powell and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Owner lives behind the house in another home. She can recommend many things to do and see.
A serious word of warning if you like to explore like we do -- DO NOT take Johnson Canyon road beyond the paved length. It splits and the right fork goes to Cannonville. Under no circumstances take this road! We did, with a storm moving in, and you take your life in your hands, literally, without rain. With rain, you might never be found and could be washed off of many areas, be stuck there for a very long time, or not make it through areas like a sand pit near the end which could easily flip a vehicle off into an abyss. This road shouldn't even be open to the public, except the first half which is a gravel, washboard-like road that leads to some ranches. The rest is a nightmare. There are areas in the bottom of the canyon where one has to drive through water, on dry days. The hairpin turns are tight and one after another pushed together. You won't be sightseeing here, even if there was anything to see.
The VERY BEST VRBO or Airbnb I have ever stayed in......
Joan was so accommodating from the moment I booked this vacation home. Mom's Place is clean, immaculate, comfortable, and roomy. You honestly feel like you are in your own home. The bedrooms are on opposite ends of the house so each person (or couple) has their own privacy. The beds are SUPER comfortable and Joan supplies extra blankets and pillows if needed. The kitchen is well stocked. Beautiful dishes to eat on each morning and evening. Joan even left a pitcher of filtered water for us in the fridge. One of areas we used the most was the patio in the front of the house. Talk about relaxing!!!!! We enjoyed our breakfast and dinner out on the front patio each day. There are so many great things about Mom's Place.... let me list a few.
Joan left maps and information we could have on all the National Parks in the area. Information about Kanab, Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, and some books about the Grand Canyon.
The sitting room off the master bedroom has a bookshelf of movies you can watch on the dvd player she has set up. The TV's all have Dish network with directions on how to work all the equipment. The sitting room has a couch and one of those comfy big chairs you can just sink into.
The location is PERFECT. It is right between Zion and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. You can make Mom's Place your base and make several day trips out to various National Park.
With a washer and dryer located in a utility room off the 2nd bathroom you can wash your clothes each day if needed. Joan supplies detergent and non-static sheets for the dryer.
If you are looking for the perfect VRBO rental in this area ...... You have found it in Mom's Place.
comfortable and clean
We really enjoyed our stay at this place. It was clean and comfortable. My elderly mother especially enjoyed the house and its nice quiet location. This home away from home has everything one needs. Thank you Joan for reaching out to us about the arrival. The entire experience was over and above.
Great location for Bryce Canyon, Zion Canyon, North Rim of Grand Canyon, Glen Canyon, and Lake Powel. Mom’s Place is super nice.
The perfect place to come back to after a day of hiking and sightseeing. This is one of the best places to stay when you’re away from home.
