About the Property
House, 4 Bedrooms + Loft, 2.5 Baths, (Sleeps 6-7)
About our house: we know that comfort and facilities are as important as old fashion charm, so of course we have Wi-Fi internet and basic cable t.v. The house is attractively furnished with a fully equipped kitchen. There is a large wrap-around veranda, plus screened-in porch and small 'breakfast' balcony with sea views off master bedroom. The finished attic doubles as a playroom/office (if you must work!) or room for extra overnight guests. The garage has parking for two cars and room for two more in front of garage. Use of bikes. Outdoor shower. Large corner lot with ample yard.
In other seasons, our house is still a lovely place to stay. We have just replaced the wood burning fireplace with a gas fireplace which is much easier to use and keeps the downstairs really cosy. The Madison Beach Hotel is open year round, as is Christy's on the next block. Winter walks on the beach are one of our favorite pastimes as our bike rides down Middle Beach Road to admire the changing colors of the marshes and the great variety of wildlife at Hammonasset State Park, which has free admission after Labor Day.
Located one house back from the beach with views of Long Island Sound, close to the Madison Beach Hotel, which offers cocktails overlooking the sea and is open for lunch and dinner. In the summer, you may walk up the beach or along the road to the Madison Surf Club that has a large playground, snack bar and many family-oriented activities. A good spot for more casual dining is 'Christy's' about a block away. They are famous for their pancakes and have established quite a following in town. Walk or bike into town, only a mile away.
Madison has much to offer including: beautiful beaches, many restaurants, independent bookstore (with book signings and other events), art cinema and numerous one-of-a-kind shops. Ten minutes from outlet stores, convenient for Shoreline East Train, with connection to Grand Central Station, New York. Close to picturesque seaside towns of Stony Creek and Mystic Seaport.

Madison exudes New England charm. In summer, the uncrowded beaches, parks and variety of outdoor activities make this a popular family destination. The nearby hotel has free summer concerts and is particularly convenient for last-minute dining, as is the new Christy's of Madison, on the opposite corner. The town is lively throughout the year with the independently-owned bookstore, R.J. Julia hosting many author events and the in-town Madison Arts Cinema offering carefully selected movies as an alternative to the usual blockbusters.
Year Purchased: 1999
About the owner: I'm originally from England but feel very much at home in New England. My husband is Italian and feels equally at home here, especially as there is good pizza to be found locally. I manage a number of properties we rent - including our beautiful apartment in Tuscany - and teach Italian. My husband has his own business which installs and manages charging stations for electric vehicles. We both love to cook, garden, play tennis and be outdoors.
Why the Owner Chose Madison Center, Madison, CT, USA:
More than a vacation rental, this is our treasured refuge. We bought this house in 1999 when we were about to be transferred to South America - we couldn't bear the thought of not coming back to Madison. The town has so much to offer: small enough for people to say hello when you pass them on the street, large enough to offer everything you need in the way of shopping and entertainment. The easy train ride to New York or Boston was also a big plus for us.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
We enjoy having breakfast on the veranda, sunset strolls to the wharf, listening to music on the lawn of the Madison Beach Hotel. We can bike into town and pick up bagels and the newspaper. If we feel energetic, we can cycle all the way down the beach road and come back through town. On summer evenings, we arrange to meet friends at the Surf Club for a picnic dinner - although we also love eating on our screened porch. In winter, there is no shortage of things to do in town. Our beloved bookstore, R.J. Julia holds many book signings by well-known authors, as well as drop-in bookclubs and events for children. Scranton Public Library also offers interesting events, a good DVD library and story time for children. The Madison Art Cinema is a shoreline favorite for finding those movies not shown at the blockbuster theaters. There is always something worth watching at this cinema. The French restaurant Bar Bouchee is always very popular with with the locals. It has a real French bistrot atmosphere and menu to match. For a great hamburger and contemporary American cuisine and a lively bar scene, we recommend Moxie on Wall Street.
