Slate House is a spectacular and unique post-and-beam artist's home, located in a private wooded setting just around the corner from the picturesque village of Bernard, where the town dock and local favorite restaurant Thurston's Lobster Pound is located. The colorful and comfortable interior has a large, open living area upstairs, along with a fabulous kitchen equipped for the gourmet cook, a cozy master bedroom with beautiful tiled shower, and a deck outside the bedroom door. The downstairs bedroom has a separate entrance and bathroom. The artist owner, who lives on the property and works in her studio here as well, maintains an extensive landscaped garden as well as a small orchard and vegetable gardens - guests are welcome to roam! The upstairs living room and bedroom look out onto a small, peaceful perennial garden and the woods beyond.
This is a perfect home for relaxing in a quiet, out-of-the way spot, yet close to the village of Southwest Harbor (4 miles) with all of its amenities.
Pets are generally welcome, please ask! Dogs do need to be kept on a leash however as there are many gardens on this property. Longer term rentals are possible, feel free to call to discuss options. A deposit of $400 is requested to secure a rental, refundable up to 45 days in advance of the rental; after that I am happy to refund your deposit if I am able to re-rent the property. Slate House is available for rental from June-October, other times of the year if available.

As you can see in the photo collage above, I love the outdoors and spend much of my time (when I'm not working in my studio) hiking and kayaking in Acadia, relaxing with friends and perusing my rather sizable garden, in which I grow most of my own food and maintain a varied perennial, tree and shrub landscape. In college I studied arts and languages (B.A. in french and fine arts, Tufts); I grew up in the Northeast and have lived in Maine since 1974
cherie purchased this House in 1986
Why cherie chose Tremont
When I moved to Mt. Desert Island from Washington County, Me in 1983, I was already very involved in the artistic community and wanted to find a piece of land here on which I could build my home. With several other artist friends, I bought property which we then divided into separate lots, mine being about 4.5 acres on which I personally built my own cabin, then my studio and house followed in 1999 and 2004 respectively. My involvement in the Island's artistic life includes co-ownership of Island Artisans Gallery (from 1983 - 2015, 32 years!) in Bar Harbor, as well as working in my own studio. I had for years also been an avid organic gardener and have been thrilled to have the land to work....
What makes this House unique
One of the great and fun aspects of my home is everything that happened long before I actually built it: for years I have collected re-cycled building materials, odd bits and pieces that I thought might go into a house someday. The flooring upstairs came out of an abandoned woolen mill in Lewiston, Me.; the slate siding on the house was salvaged from a roof in Portland, Me. - so much of what I see every day in the house has a story and a memory for me.

Greatest Trip Ever!
This house was way beyond our expectations! The chefs kitchen, the craftsman ship, décor, the fact we could do laundry and have our dogs also was just wonderful! The house was secluded but yet close to everything. Cherie was a great hostess and have even invited her to visit us when she comes to Georgia!
We drove all the scenic highways, but let me assure you do NOT miss Schoodic Point. Thunder Hole is just a burp compared to it!
So delighted you had such a great time - and yes Schoodic is a gem! Fall is a perfect time to be here - hope you'll come back to visit again, I really enjoyed meeting and chatting with you....and would love to see you if I get to Georgia!
and ps, thank you so much for leaving the house in such great condition!!
We had a great time on Mt. Desert Island with Slate House as our base. Everything was as advertised and Cherie was very gracious. The "quiet side" of Acadia is just that, and is reflected in the environment and the way people give each other their space. Cherie had some great suggestions for activities and food as well. Thanks!
Not your grandpa's camp
Cherie refers to her compound on the "quiet side" of Mount Desert Island as "the camp," but growing up, "camp" never had indoor plumbing, let alone a piano and a restaurant-style kitchen. I would have done a lot more camping if that had been the case. We didn't explore much of the outdoor spaces because of the unusually high number of mosquitoes that were around the property, though a couple of citronella candles and some Off! enabled us to spend time on the little balcony outside the master bedroom. We wished we could have explored more of the woods and gardens around the property. However, the interior was surprisingly light and airy for a cabin in the woods and was very artfully appointed. We were a little intimidated about lighting the professional-grade gas stove, but soon got the hang of it. Cherie has a home and studio in the same compound, so she was very accessible and helpful, but also unobtrusive. She checked in on us and our dog to make sure we were settling in okay, and she was quick to address any issues that arose. Enough can't be said about being on the quieter side of Acadia. You're not more than 30 minutes away from any of the action, but you can leave it all behind, too.
A wonderful vacation, staying in a wonderful house
We loved our stay at Slate House. Cherie's place is very comfortable, very beautiful and extraordinarily relaxing. While we ate out half the time, we made good use of the well-appointed kitchen, buying local produce and cheeses at a nearby organic farm and wine, beer and proteins in Southeast Harbor. The piano was great fun and in good condition. We fell asleep to the sound of the wind through the surrounding woods and woke to the singing birds. After a full day hiking, canoeing or just sightseeing gardens, museums and pretty little towns, we loved being able to come "home" to Slate House. Being on the quiet side of Mount Desert Island has its benefits, and staying here is definitely one of them.
Perfect, private and well-stocked
We had a lovely 5 days at Cherie's beautiful and unique home. The kitchen is amazing and the space was perfect for our family of four and dog. Cherie was easily accessible and we were close to hikes, restaurants, art and lobster :) Thank you!
The best ever!
We've been vacationing in the Bass Harbor area for over 15 years and Cherie's Slate House has been the most pleasant of our rental experiences. The pictures can't capture how unique and comfortable the house is, with works of art everywhere. The surrounding gardens make the stay even more special. Cherie is there if you need her but you also have complete privacy and no road noise- - a real plus. Be sure to ask her about the construction and planning of her beautiful home.
Slate House is located on the 'quietside' of Mt. Desert Island which boasts some of the island's finest restaurants, beautiful trails along the shore and in the mountains, a ferry serving the outer islands and charter boats available for whale watching and sightseeing, all within minutes of Slate House. 5 minutes away in Seal Cove you'll find one of the best antique auto museums in the country! The Island Explorer free bus also runs very near by and travels all over the island. A few miles away, Southwest Harbor has small boutiques, a great library, excellent food stores and restaurants, as well as a golf course; the larger town of Bar Harbor, with more extensive shopping and nightlife, is about a half hour drive. And of course Acadia National Park offers miles of hiking, biking and horseback riding trails along its spectacular mountains, lakes and ponds, and carriage trails.
