About this property
Shiki Homes | ASUKA 飛鳥
What do you get when you combine a traditional Japanese machiya with an injection of New York loft-style interior design? The answer is Asuka, a home with elegance and personality in equal measure. This unique, double-story, six-person-capacity home is situated just a short walk from Kyoto’s lively Gojo area, offering easy access to the city’s busy entertainment districts and key landmarks. It’s also close to the UNESCO World Heritage temple Kiyomizu-dera.
Completely renovated to both showcase its original beauty and invigorate the home with new, modern energy, this home is a wonderful combination of the traditional and the modern.
With its large windows, floods of natural sunlight, and open-plan living, dining and kitchen space, Asuka boasts a free-flowing feel and a sense of lightness not often found in too many Kyomachiya (traditional Kyoto homes). Upstairs are the generous and elegantly simple bedrooms, designed to maximize space and privacy.
Asuka has the potential to be more than just a holiday home. Its effortless livability and thoughtful design that prioritizes comfort make it a great longer-term rental option. Guests love turning Asuka into their own little home away from home, and you can too!

We had a very comfortable stay, the place had everything you need to be comfortable. Was in easy location to anything you wanted to do. So happy we chose a Shiki Home.

Thank you very much for your kind words and review. We are glad that you have enjoyed your stay with us. We look forward to hosting you again.
This house was exactly what we needed for two couples staying 5 nights in Kyoto. Having two toilets was important to us and the combo washer/dryer was an added bonus. We did have to hang dry some items as the dryer portion only somewhat worked but they had a clothesline in the kitchen and clothespins. The location is walkable to the river and Gion as well as bus and train stops. We did have issues with taxis not coming down the narrow street but it wasn't far to walk. They had umbrellas and bikes available but we didn't use them. Would stay here again!

The house was fine, spacious for Japan, had everything we needed, and convenient for public transport.
We felt Vrbo were unreasonable to request extra City Tax be paid on a Friday evening, banks not open until Monday, and said they would not give the Entry Code until it was paid. The problem was eventually sorted out, but caused us considerable trouble and worry.

Thank you for taking the time and effort to write a review for us. We appreciate your compliments and feedback and will continue to improve the products and services that we provide.
For the Kyoto city accommodation tax separate charge portion, we apologize for any inconvenience. Most hotels and accommodation properties on Vrbo also charge this separately and if this can be included in the initial pricing, we hope this will help you in the future when choosing a place to stay in Kyoto on Vrbo.
Best regards,

This was a comfortable place for 2 of us. We didn't use the 2nd bedroom, but it has 3 additional beds for a family. Having a 2nd toilet upstairs is convenient. The double bed was comfortable. We had one small issue which was promptly resolved; the property owners were very responsive. It was a nice break from staying in hotels.
We spoke quietly while in the house and kept the TV volume very low (per a written request in the property manual), because you can clearly hear neighbors talking outside, and they can hear you. There's a gap in the front window frame that's open to the outside. On the upside, it's a narrow and quiet street with very little activity. It didn't bother us, but I wouldn't recommend it for a loud group or family. (I'm from a loud family, so I speak from experience).
We were able to walk to a number of temples, shrines, the market, and the National Museum. Otherwise, we relied on the Taxi Go app for further destinations, because the train and subway stations are a bit further from the townhouse location.
