Tigh Beag Writers Retreat. Secluded Waterfront acreage.

Our Tigh Beag (little house in Gaelic) invites you to relax and unwind. Enjoy reconnecting with nature and with yourself at our secluded waterfront home on the Bras d’Or lake (the largest inland salt water lake in the world).
Nestled amongst mature trees, our three bedroom house is a short drive to world class golf and within a day’s drive to many of the best seasonal attractions Cape Breton has to offer.
Guests enjoy access to the entire house and over an acre of treed property. Hi speed wifi, a fully equipped kitchen with dishwasher, gas BBQ, washer and dryer, full bathroom as well as an large screen T.V with ROKU, an assortment of DVD movies, video games, books, indoor and outdoor games and an electric fireplace make for a comfortable stay. Our beach is private and peaceful connecting to the house via a whimsical path. There is a spot on the beach for fires and a propane fire pit on the deck. We are 30 minutes from grocery/gas so be sure to stop in Port Hawkesbury or St.Peters for supplies on your way.
The house is small and caters to couples or small families. NON-SHEDDING dogs will be considered on a case by case basis. We are located in St. George’s Channel, half way between St. Peter’s and Port Hawkesbury. We are 5 miles from the Dundee Golf Course and less than 10 miles from a Provincial Park boat launch. “Fishing Booking “ names the Bras d’Or lake as “a golden ticket to both freshwater and saltwater fishing adventures”. As well, we are within a day’s round trip drive to The Fortress Louisbourg, Miners Museum, Highland Village, Cabot Links Golf, Alexander Graham Bell Museum, Gaelic College, Glenora Distillery, local vineyards, and many other attractions. The Cabot Trail is also accessible and can be driven round trip within a day if you get an early start.
Celtic Colours is one of many music festivals that takes place on the island, and we are perfectly situated for easy access to the many venues.
There is a lot to see and do in Cape Breton. We are a great stopping point as well for folks heading on to Newfoundland via North Sydney if you chose the scenic route 4.

The cottage was clean, well decorated and contained everything we needed. The host was very easy to contact. All appliances, bbq and tv worked perfectly. Our little dog enjoyed the yard and beach. Of all the cottages we have stayed at, this is definitely our favourite.

Very clean, had everything one would need. I'm more of a minimalist but that's an individuals taste. It was quiet which I was looking for. Wifi/phone is spotty, had to go outside to get a signal..not a big deal. love the walk to the water, the beach was lovely. Overall, I would definitely rent there again.

We spent a week at this charming location. The cottage had all the conveniences we wanted and was decorated beautifully. We appreciated the private beach area where we could relax and enjoy the views including amazing sunsets. We enjoyed seeing wildlife around the yard —— a fox, deer, eagles and multiple birds. We highly recommend this place if you are looking for natures beauty and peacefulness!

This Cape Breton "cottage" has everything you could hope for. Quiet, daily sightings of deer and red fox and eagles and other birds. The "magical" nature walk to Lake Bras d'Or added joy and whimsy and time for reflection. The water is crystal clear, and the air is so clean and fresh. The "little house" is homey, very clean, and has everything you need to cooks some meals, and enjoy a mug of coffee or tea. I brought oatcakes, but Cape Breton has no shortage of excellent bakeries (Aucoins and Cedar House are top of the list!). We did not even reach the Causeway til my husband and I wanted to U-turn and stay longer. We will recommend to friends we know who will visit Cape Breton, and we hope to be back someday too. Thank you Sandy and John for everything!

Quiet spot

We stayed there while fishing so we were gone early and back late but its a beautiful spot. With every thing you need for a perfect vacation stay. Dundee just down the road with a beautiful beach.

What a wonderful place ! Absolutely everything you would need. Definitely bring all your provisions it is secluded as advertised so a bit of a drive to pick up groceries etc but we had read previous reviews and were prepared. There was a little bit of property damage as we came just after the state of emergency in September 2026, but the property owners made us aware and the property was fixed up almost immediately after we arrived. What a beautiful beach, amazing rocks …we swam in the lake ( just after Labour Day)and walked the picturesque beach .The walk to the beach from the home maymaybe be a little bit challenging for people with mobility issues but manageable even when wet if you take your time.We would love to return next year.

This cozy house was perfect for us. We felt right at home here. The house was beautifully decorated and every window has a gorgeous view. The backyard is large and the trail to the beach makes you want to go every morning and every evening. The host was super helpful to us during our stay. I would give it six stars if I could.

We loved the stay here at the Writer’s Retreat which was only a short distance from a wedding venue (Dundee Golf and Country Club). It is pet friendly and our dog Charlie felt right at home plus it was great to have a nice safe path to walk Charlie to the lakeshore where we enjoyed the beautiful scenery of the salt water lake. Sandy and John are excellent hosts.

The cottage is secluded with plenty of wildlife and amazing scenery. We were visited by fox, deer and hummingbirds!The kitchen is well appointed and beds are comfortable. Our host was very responsive to questions before and during our stay.The short walk to the shore leads to a rocky beach with lovely views and awe inspiring sunsets.Would definitely recommend if you are looking for a place to relax and unwind. Make sure to stop for provisions on the way to the cottage as the nearest grocery is about 30 minutes away.

We loved everything. It had everything you could possibly want or need. The path to the lake could use some lighting. Otherwise it is an amazing place to unwind and decompress. We definitely want to go back.

We had a wonderful one week stay in July. The home is stocked with everything you could need, plus lots of labeled extra supplies. I found the home very clean and very organized, which I love. Saw many fox and deer right out front and back, which was such a treat. Its a pleasant stroll down to the lake, and a nice long shore to walk on (rocky, for those with mobility issues). St. Peter's is the closest small town (20 min) which has some of the necessities. Walking or biking along the historic locks there, and the adjoining Coastal Trail, is a pleasant local activity. The home is a great place to relax and unwind. It is about 1.5 hours from the start of the Cabot Trail, which itself is hours long. Just something to note if that is your primary reason for visiting Cape Breton. My favorite spots on my trip was the Groovy Goat Farm on the Cabot Trail, and Donelda's Puffin boat tour.

What a wonderful week! The cottage is so cozy with all the conveniences one could want. A beautiful location and magical path to the lake. Such peace and tranquility. My only regret is I didn’t get to stay longer! I’ll be booking again for next year and won’t make the same mistake :)

Peacefully Bliss

The cottage is very comfortable and well equipped for all your needs. We brought our own groceries and enjoyed bbqing and sitting on the deck. The private path to the beach was such a pleasant addition. Great cell service and lots of movies and games to pass the time. Close to St Peter's and Marble Mountain to see the scenery. Enjoyed 5 evenings of beautiful sunsets. Highly recommend.

Perfect little quiet home.

We chose this location by proximity to the lake. It was clean and well appointed and did not disappoint (other than we didn’t catch any fish). Home was well stocked with necessity item including cookware which was important for us as we cooked our own meals. It also had dishwasher and detergent along with washer and dryer and laundry soap. It was a quiet peaceful location and I would definitely stay there again!

The place is good, and we had a good time in the area. The place is not right on the beach--it is about a 200 meter walk through the woods. The house is pretty remote, which can be a good thing, but every place we wanted to visit is at least an hour drive away. We did a lot of driving and spent a lot on gas. We wish we had stayed in Baddeck.

As indicated in our listing our cottage is secluded and is connected to the shore via a rustic treed path which is pictured. It is unfortunate that you did not reach out to us with questions about driving distances when you asked us about kayak rentals as we would have been more than happy to help you with your trip planning.

Beautiful spot.

This is a lovely cottage fully equipped with everything you need. The path down to the water is magical and the scenery is breathtaking.The only reason that I did not give it 5 stars is because we had a difficult time finding food when we arrived. The nearest market is 25 minutes away. If you come prepared with provisions you are all set for a wonderful time.

Relaxation

After a VERY minor glitch with the alarm system we settled in to this lovely and extremely comfortable home. Everything we needed was there, from kitchen utensils to squirrels and deer to the most amazing sunset! Even a day of rain was not an issue. It was perfect for hot chocolate and curling up with a good book. The only thing that would have made it better would have been more time there.

Sandy and John are what Cape Breton hospitality is all about. Their well appointed home has everything you need and more. The magical path to the beach is lit with fairy lights and although a fire ban was in place during our visit we enjoyed their deck fire pit on crisp October nights. The house is secluded and surrounded by beautiful fall foliage. Internet and a large screen smart tv are available for rainy days. Not a sound was heard or a living soul spotted during our stay and we slept oh so well. Our only complaint is that we couldn’t stay longer. John and Sandy are responsive hosts and we highly recommend their lovely home.
