Hi! We’re Erica and John, the owners of Sandpiper Cottage at Laguna Beach.
We’re both college biology professors and proud parents of five children. Some of our most cherished memories as a family have been made on beach vacations — spending long days in the sun, exploring nature, and simply having time together away from the busyness of everyday life.
Creating Sandpiper Cottage has been a special project for us, and our hope is to share that same sense of connection, relaxation, and joy with the families and friends who stay here. We truly hope your time at the beach becomes as meaningful to you as it has been to us.

We were on the hunt for a home big enough for our whole crew. Somewhere we could escape to a few times a year during our teaching breaks. One beach trip a year just wasn’t cutting it for us! When we discovered Laguna Beach, we fell in love instantly. The neighborhood has such a peaceful, private feel, yet it’s only minutes from everything you could possibly want to do.
One of the things that makes this area so special is what you won’t find here: no high‑rise condos, no rows of hotels, and no crowded beaches. Much of Laguna Beach’s shoreline is beautifully undeveloped and zoned to stay that way, protecting the natural dunes and preserving those stunning coastal views. As biology professors, conservation is close to our hearts, so being able to step outside and see native birds, plants, and coastal wildlife right in the neighborhood feels like a dream.
We love how close we are to all our favorite spots. Pier Park is perfect for shopping, dining, and entertainment. Head west on 30A and it’s a whole lineup of unforgettable experiences—French‑inspired architecture and amazing dinners in Rosemary Beach, the bright white Bahamian‑inspired beauty of Alys Beach, and the relaxed, iconic charm of Seaside. Renting bikes there and exploring the town (and its food scene!) is one of our favorite traditions.
We’re also huge fans of the local nature preserves. We’ll often spend a day hiking the dunes at Topsail or exploring the protected jetty at St. Andrews. From there, you can catch a ferry to Shell Island—a spectacular 7‑mile stretch of untouched coastline perfect for shelling, snorkeling, and simply unwinding.
There’s always something new to see or do, and honestly, we’re constantly counting down the days until our next trip back. Laguna Beach and the surrounding area have brought our family so much joy, and we’re thrilled to share that experience with our guests.
