cabin on the beach

The views and easy access to the water was amazing, the hosts were very accommodating and gave guidance to the island. The unit is great for senior citizens as we brought my in-laws, which gave them easy access to an inground pool right next to the unit. I give the unit 5stars and highly recommend, as advice to travelers, this unit is more cabin than condo, so bring plastic ziploc bags for perishables as there are quite a few open air windows to let a good breeze in.

Lower Beachgate

The location cannot be bettered and the property is like a home from home. Philip and Tina were lovely, very welcoming and great hosts. We would return in a heartbeat.

Superb location and set up

We stayed at Lower Beachgate for 10 days in December. What a fantastic place and a great find. Set right on a quite white sand beach in Hastings. With great views from the master bedroom it's simply paradise. Go through the property gate and you are on the beach. Extremely spacious for 4 adults and well laid out. Plese don't tell anyone else about this small piece of heaven as we want it to be our secret so we can book again next year.

Absolutely Perfect!

Lower Beachgate is absolutely lovely! Firstly, it is picture perfect and sits right on a great beach and is steps away from the boardwalk on the lively south coast. There are plenty of terrific restaurants and amenities within walking distance whether you go street side or along the boardwalk or beach. The property is well appointed and has everything you could need and more. The landscaping is beautiful and it’s truly a joy to stay there. Additionally, Tina and Philip are great hosts and the gardening and housekeeping staff are delightful folks. Would highly recommend a visit to Barbados and a stay at Lower Beachgate!

Upper Swanage is GREAT!

Three of us stayed in the 2 bedroom, 2 bath apartment at Upper Swanage. It was as advertised and more. The beach is right in front and swimmable with easy access for children and for those who want to swim a bit further. The breakwater in front is made of rocks, and little fishies live there, so you can even snorkel right there. Many amenities are short walk away including a couple of resorts with beachside restaurants and bars, and the new Hastings Boardwalk. The apartment itself had everything we needed and more. Tina and Phillip were always at the ready to help, and the owners who happened to be next door at the same time were so wondefully friendly. High marks, indeed!

An EXCELLENT Stay!

Staying at Beachgate was perfect for my family. It was large and roomy. The veiw was breathtaking. I have two teenagers, and they loved the fact they could jump in the ocean mere feet from our door. All of our needs were met-Philip and Tina arranged the taxi to the house; Tina was there to greet us, and they had even left fruit for us. They gave us many pointers that were definitely needed. I would highly recommend this place if you are planning a visit to Barbados. It is close to Bridgetown, the airport, as well as great places to eat. A comfortable place, cool atmosphere, great managers. What more can you ask for.

Oasis of Tranquility

Sitting here on our last day, listening it the bells of the nearby church chime 7:00 am with the back-drop of soothing ocean waves as I sip on my morning coffee pondering all the blessings that I have. This is our 6th visit to the island of Barbados and our 2nd time staying with Tina and Philip at their Beachgate property. Karma and good fate brought me here last year and will never again stay anywhere else. I pack up to leave, and I am rejuvenated, ready to face the day-to-day trials of our life back in Ottawa ... For another year at least :) Should good fortune bring you to this listing, do not hesitate, as you will not be disappointed. There is not one thing I could find fault with this lovely home away from home. The accommodations are well represented in the photos. You are close enough to everything you may need and yet far enough away to find peace in watching the world go by around you. In fact, in the last week I have wandered no further than a 10 minute walk in either direction to find our evening meals, when I chose not to cook. Barbados is an island rich in history. Once you get a Bajan to smile they radiate friendship and goodwill. Getting off the well beaten tourist tracks you will see beauty all around you. Unfortunately for you, dear reader, I have booked this accommodation for years to come, as my oasis of tranquility the first two weeks of every February. Not only have I found a place to lay my weary head, I have the honor of calling my hosts friends. Tina and Philip are gems and I thank them for all that they have done to ensure our vacation is nothing short of perfect.

Beautiful house, beautiful location makes for a perfect holiday.

The photographs of Lower Beachgate don't do it justice - you miss the sound of the waves, the hot sunshine and the cool breezes! Everyone ( owners as well as Tina and Philip) was very pleasant and easy to talk to. The house is private, quiet and very clean. So relaxing to be in your "own" place. Nice to open the doors and sit out on the patio with your morning coffee. Perfect location - we went snorkeling every day and would finish off our "beaching" with a dip in the pool. The boardwalk is great for a run or a stroll - or even to sit and visit with others. Some grocery shopping is nearby; the larger store is a pleasant 10-15 minute walk. Word of advice: pay the money for an extra suitcase and load it with food - packaged/tinned- as food costs are high. Rent a car for a day and explore the island - the contrasts between the coasts is amazing. People are very good about directions if you are lost. We would definitely like to come back here or to its sister property beside it.

perfection

Amazing house. Everything you could ask for! Owners were very friendly and helpful, even suggested that if we got lost at any stage of the night to call Tina! Much appreciated. 4 girls stayed there and was perfect with two bedrooms and two large bathrooms! great location and just amazingly beautiful, did not want to leave and definitely would look at booking there again! Thanks.

Absolutely Perfect!

We stayed at Lower Beachgate from December 5th to 15th and it was an absolutely perfect spot. The house is well appointed and the photos shown are extremely accurate, and if anything do not do justice to how beautiful a spot this really is. We spent many days and nights strolling down the boardwalk and exploring. There are all sorts of amenities in close proximity and Tina and Phil were terrific hosts and gave us loads of great advice. All of the folks we met on the island were fantastic and provided us with many great memories. Usually by the end of our vacation we are missing home and our family but this time it was really hard to have our last breakfast on the terrace overlooking the ocean. We will definitely be returning to Barbados and Lower Beachgate in the future.

Wonderful 20th Anniversary!

We stayed at Beachgate from October 10th - 17th, 2011. Everything was absolutely wonderful. The pictures match the rental perfectly, and we had absolutely everything we needed for a wonderful vacation. There were nice chairs by the pool, and chairs that you could put in the back of your car to take to another beach. Although we did not meet Tina (or have carrot cake!) Phillip answered all of our questions easily. The Wi-Fi worked quite well, and the kitchen was well enough equipped that we cooked many of our nights after getting fish at Paynes Bay or Oistins ($4/lb US for wonderful fresh fish!). We would absolutely rent this house again!

A little bit of Paradise!

We spent a week at Lower Beachgate (aka paradise) during March break. Normally we spend our vacation on a cruise or at a resort but given the high season we wanted more privacy. We chose Lower Beachgate for both the location (beachfront) and the property description. We were not disappointed. It was beautiful. We had BBQ dinners while watching the sunset, went swimming in the ocean & in the private pool (shared with the upstairs tenants), and took daily strolls along the boardwalk. The area in front of the property had many rocks so we found swimming better at Accra Beach (short stroll along the boardwalk). Lounge chairs & umbrellas were available for rent ($20)! If you wanted to stay closer to home you could lounge on the private patio overlooking the ocean. Tina had some wonderful restaurant recommendations and Philip was a great landlord. Together they made sure our week at Lower Beachgate went smoothly. The property has a BBQ & we had some great meals. We bought fresh fish @ Oistens (had it filleted) when we arrived and Philip suggested a place where we could order some great steaks (frozen import). They were delivered to our door for no extra cost. Thanks to James (in an earlier review) we brought a collapsible cooler along and enjoyed cold drinks & snacks on the beach. For dessert we recommend Tina's Carrot Cake - a long time secret family recipe. We are looking forward to returning next year! Thanks Tina & Philip!! Lynn & Brian

"The Perfect Spot" review says it al!!

Our 10 days spent at Lower Beachgate could not have been much more perfect. The posted pictures and description caused us to have very high expectations and they were absolutely exceeded. We realized this the moment we stepped down from Hastings Road! Lower Beachgate is beautiful. We spent the first week walking the beach and exploring the Bridgetown area, often using efficient, low cost public transport. There are lots of places to purchase supplies and we had a glorious breakfast each morning looking out over the ocean. So many restaurant options for lunch or dinner and many within an easy walk. Our personal local favourite was Shakers. For something a bit more upscale we liked 39 Steps (fabulous liver pate and reasonably priced excellent wine list) and Lobster Live near Bridgetown. Fred's Club directly across the road is a unique spot for a cold beverage and Mama Mias, a short walk away, is great for breakfast or lunch. Hockey fans must check out Bert's for food and drinks and NHL memorabilia. We rented a moke (small open topped jeep) for 3 days and saw much of the east and north coasts. The abandoned resort on the north coast is well worth the drive. We ate at several local rum shacks during our road trips and were never disappointed. Daily swims in the ocean and the pool are now just a fond memory... as are the many walks along the beautiful boardwalk. Be prepared to take dozens of sunset photos because you won't believe that the one you are witnessing will be repeated! Thank goodness for digital photography. Tina and Philip were very helpful and friendly and gave us lots of advice when asked. We hope to be able to return to Barbados and would start our search for accommodations with Lower Beachgate. We have shared this information with several friends and family.

The Perfect Spot

The description doesn’t do this apartment justice. It is everything described and more. Garden doors that open to ocean views and a beautiful vine – covered terrace and a private pool. Location is close enough to the bustling city of Bridgetown but far enough away to lose yourself in the magic of the island. Lower Beachgate is just steps from the boardwalk that will take you down towards Accra Beach passing by restaurants, pubs and shopping. This spot has all the comforts of home with 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a cozy living room that opens to the terrace and a kitchen that looks over looks the pool. It is set in a private location where one can feel secure and with Internet access one can keep in touch with the world (if necessary). I loved my stay at Lower Beachgate. If this is your first trip or twentieth trip to the island, this is the place to stay.

Barbados-Jan 30, 2011-Lower Beachgate

We really enjoyed our stay in this lovely, very spacious, 2 bed 2 bath ground level oceanfront residence. It featured a bright well designed open layout, with great views of the water from inside the residence, out on the covered patio and around the private pool. We found the home very clean and well stocked upon our arrival on Jan 30, 2011. However, a large flat screen TV and good sound system for the dwelling would have made it even better. Also, many travelers like to explore the island and have picnics by the water; a few comfortable floding chairs or sun cots, a cooler, and a couple of boogie boards would have been handy for guests to enjoy. The residence is situated in an excellent location, with a beautiful beach in front of the property, the "boardwalk" is only about 100 meters away and it's a great place for an early morning run along the ocean. The Hilton Hotel is about 25 minutes away if you walk along the sandy beach and we enjoyed doing that around sunset. the "Fish Fry" in Oistens is a great spot for dinner (Mo's) (10 minutes by car) and we did our grocery shopping at a nice store nearby. There are numerous restuarants within walking distance of Lower Beachgate; however, we highly reccommend the buffet lunches at "Brown Sugar" (nearby) and a trip to the Atlantis Hotel on the east coast for the weekend or Wednesday buffet and great sightseeing. Spend time relaxing on "Miami Beach" (nearby) one afternoon resting in the shade or working on your tan, while there try playing "beach tennis" with locals, enjoy the water and great scenery. We had fun touring the brewery, seeing the cave, chatting with the friendly locals (often getting directions) while driving around exploring the beautiful island of Barbados. Our host, Philip, was very helpful, a pleasure to deal with, and we look forward to seeing him again soon. Good value. James
