Occupying a superb position overlooking the River Ewe, it’s conveniently close to Poolewe’s shops, cafés, children’s play area and indoor swimming pool, while the village hall hosts a local producers’ weekly market. Less than 300 metres from the doorstep, the river meets Loch Ewe. Follow the footpath around the head of the loch and you’ll reach gorgeous Inverewe Garden, famous for its sub-tropical plants and one of the area’s must-see attractions. Head upriver, instead, and Loch Maree has plenty to offer the explorer, with a wealth of walking options and a number of Munros rising above the water, including Slioch and Beinn Eighe. For a change of terrain, scenic coastal village Gairloch (6 miles) has beautiful unspoilt beaches; take a glass-bottomed boat trip from the harbour to get up close to the local sea life.
