Overall we had a nice stay! The place was clean, ready for us to enjoy!

We weren’t sure if we’d make it up to the house due to the weather but management communicated with us throughout and were very helpful. We would definitely stay here again! The house is perfect for big group gatherings.

Wonderful stay

Perfectly removed from the fast pace of the pre-holiday week, but not too far to make a run to town anything inconvenient. The home felt like a castle in the clouds. We loved it!

This magical property was everything and more than described in the listing. There was plenty of space and activities to entertain guests of all ages. Everything was exceptionally clean, thoughtfully curated, and well stocked. The property truly has every amenity you could ask for. We booked this home because it’s completely surrounded by nature, and it did not disappoint. The majestic mountains and rolling hills made for incredible hiking, while the ocean views were absolutely breathtaking. Keep in mind this is a rural mountain property, so there are portions of unpaved roads and steep terrain leading up to the house. We’d definitely recommend arriving in an SUV or truck. A huge thank you to the hosts for such a wonderful experience: we will absolutely be back!

The property is beautifully maintained, very well outfitted for a large group. Our group of 11 had plenty of space to spread out. Those that wanted quiet could find it and those that wanted to watch football and play pool had space to do that. The kitchen is a dream, with tons of space with two fridges, two dishwashers, and a large stove. The view is stunning and it’s so quiet!

Amazing as usual

Steppladder Ranch is an amazing place to say for those with large groups needing plenty of room. The accommodations are excellent with plenty of space to spread out. The views in the evening as the sun sets towards the coast cannot be beat!

Cambria Stay

Awesome place. Loved all the rain and fog and little critters that came out. Loved all the nosey cows. Kids loved the game room. We loved the space. It was a great time.

Birthday Celebration

We celebrated my 60th birthday, and my mother's 85th birthday at Stepladder Ranch. The accommodations were excellent, and the property and views were awesome. We had a blast, and we hope to return for another special occasion sometime soon. The communication with the property management was spot on also.

Perfect Vacation Spot

This property is AMAZING!! While the first trip up the hill was scary…we all agreed it was well worth it. The home is perfect for a large group, the view was spectacular, and everything in the home was high quality making it a pleasure to stay in and cook, play family games, and make memories. I am already looking forward to making another trip!!

Beautiful house with spectacular view

We stayed the weekend with our large family. It was perfect. We did not mind the drive up the hill and were appropriately advised of the remoteness.

Family holiday getaway

We had four generations celebrating the holidays at the house and it was wonderful. The property itself is a challenge to get to with a scary drive up a dirt road along the side of a mountain, particularly scary at night and in the rain, but once there it was beautiful.

5 days surrounded by natural beauty

This house sits amidst an incredibly beautiful natural setting overlooking the Pacific Ocean to the West and the Santa Lucia coastal range to the East. Wildlife and wildflowers are plentiful. Fantastic sunsets. Endless stargazing. A kitchen that is capable of feeding a small army.

Time in The Big House

The Big House was amazing, with plenty of room for people to spread out and enjoy the views. The furnishings are very nice, and the big fireplace was very cozy. We would definitely rent here again. The road up to the house is very rough—more so than we expected—so it’s really only passable for trucks or SUVs, in my opinion.

Amazing location and views.

The home is generously accommodating. Beautiful surroundings. Perfect for a group of family and friends. The tour of the goats, kids and creamery was wonderful for the grandchildren and the cheese tasting was great fun for the adults. The road to the site was challenging due to recent rains but we all made it up one way or the other. Beach and Bay did not return urgent messages but we called the needed help in directly and got the propane delivered and the pilots all relit promptly.

annual gathering

Arrived April 16th. Because of major rain over the winter, the hills were spectacular. House is beyond wonderful. We were told that drive from Hwy 1 to "driveway" to house was a slow process and that is true. That being said, the driver must pay attention but the rest of us in the car kept oohing and aawing at the beauty. Would recommend that once you arrive, you stay.

Best getaway

The minute we stepped into the property our shoulders relaxed and we honestly never wanted to leave. We brought up all our groceries for our family and did not leave for the first three days of our stay! The sunsets are breathtaking and the morning sounds of cows "mooing" was a delight. The game room kept everyone happy. We hope to stay here again in the future. Also highly recommend the creamery tour ( need reservations)...the goats brought smiles out of all of us and the cheese is amazing to take back and drink a bottle of rose. Thank you for the honestly best 5 full days of family time and memories that were made.

Excellent place for a family and friend vacation

We had a wonderful experience at Stepladder Ranch for my 40th Birthday Celebration. This was the perfect set up for family and friends to gather during a week of vacation for hiking, games, relaxing in the hot tub and generally relaxing. It was far enough away from the hustle but also easy to get to wine tasting, Hearst castle, and the beach. The lack of cell phone service really helped us to "unplug" and they 360 degree views were awesome. Game from and kitchen amenities were excellent. Sophia was wonderful at responding to some minor difficulties with a wasp nest near the door, arranging a tour of the creamery and general planning with a chef and BBQ. We had a great time and I would definitely recommend the place to anyone.

Incredible stars

We filled up the place with 16 and two dogs. This is a very special place, hard to put into words. It’s up there! The air is rarified. Maybe that’s why the stars were so clear. Seeing what Jack and Michelle are up to at Stepladder Ranch is always an inspiration. Half our group was kids and the house worked perfectly with the game room and enough space for them to run around. We will be back.

New Years’ Family stay

Wonderful property for 10 family members spanning three generations. Love the location and large kitchen/dining area. This is all on one floor which was helpful for Mom, who is on a walker. A sign at the ranch would have been helpful to find the right road up to the property. Loved the three sinks, two dishwashers, two ovens and two refrigerators. Great for big family meals. The only thing that could be improved is to include a complimentary tasting of the Stepladder cheese, or tour of the creamery. As it was we had to buy the local cheese in a Cambria store. The views are lovely, and the bonus game room was fun too. Thanks for a great week.

Christmas NYE family gift trip

Stepladder ranch is amazing and the big house is large enough for a family of 16+ lots of open space room to play games run around huge kitchen. Our only biggest complaint the whole time was that there were only seven forks in the entire home and after we checked out they brought an abundance of forks but during the stay they did not bring any forks which was frustrating but beyond that the house is great location is super fun. The video of the home showed a hot tub so we all brought suits to go in the hot tub and there was no hot tub.

Thank you for the opportunity to stay at the Big House in Cambria. It was a beautiful and inviting home—comfortable in every way, and perfect for the whole family. The game room was a big hit, and the stunning views from nearly every angle made it even more special.We spent Father’s Day morning in town enjoying breakfast and a walk along the beach, then returned for cheeseburgers and a relaxing afternoon exploring and unwinding. The bedding was incredibly comfortable, the AC kept us cool during the warmer parts of the day, and the ocean breeze through the open windows made the evenings just right.One of the highlights was capturing last night’s sunset photo together—a memory we’ll cherish for years to come. We’re already looking forward to returning and are very interested in exploring your other properties in the area. Living just down the road in Orcutt, this quick getaway was exactly what our family needed to reconnect.Thank you again for the warm and memorable stay!

beautiful house, perfect for a family reunion or retreat

The house itself was beautiful and well-kept. However, the road to the property was much too tough to navigate, especially at dusk and at night. The fact that the VRBO listing keeps this fact completely hidden until 3 days before the rental, is not right. It is possible that someone may need to opt out of such a long, winding drive up to the property. The fact that there is no cell service immediately as soon as you turn from Hwy 1, is also a deterrent given that the road to the property is so winding and long .It is a dirt road up to the property and not all cars can be comfortable with this, without any access to help due to lack of cell service. Perhaps Beach-Bay Getaways can address this, or give their rental guests a note of what to expect, clearly.

We have done our best to ensure that all guests understand all of this prior to making a reservation so there aren't any surprises. Directly from the home description: “The home is located rurally, so we recommend getting groceries in advance in Cambria since you'll want to settle in once you arrive after your drive through the country. This is a private ranch off a long, rural country road and an unpaved driveway, but it's so worth the adventure (a standard car will make it just fine). The home is about 15 minutes from Cambria and 45 minutes from San Luis Obispo and Paso Robles.” Thank you again for being our guest and I hope we can host you again in the future.
