By all the standard measures, this is a fine property, administered with a high degree of professionalism. On the other hand there is a high probability that the property was constructed with toxic materials which may make it unfit for occupancy.Noted in the house rules and in multiple reviews is a reference to an odor, or scent, which, depending on the weather may be stronger or weaker. To help mitigate these odors there are multiple fans, air filters and room fresheners in the unit. On our stay, upon entry to the unit, the odor was surprisingly strong, permeating the unit. We thought maybe “ant spray,” or even “oil spill.” (?)The explanation from the host was that the odor was from the “tsunami grade” framing, used for safety reasons. While “tsunami grade” isn’t a construction term, “marine grade” is. Infused with a complex mixture of pesticides and petrochemicals, it protects wood from insects and rot. The odors you will notice are most likely from the off gassing of VOCs (volatile organic compounds), which can be hazardous. Symptoms of exposure include irritation to eyes and throat, and headaches. We had rented the unit for a week. After two nights we decided to vacate.
