The Obenrüdener Kotten is located in a valley within the Wupper Nature Reserve, in the heart of the Bergisches Land. Situated right on the river and just outside the small village of Rüden, this restored and historically protected brick building stands as a testament to Solingen’s long-standing knife-making tradition. As far back as 300 years ago, knives were sharpened, polished, and assembled at this site. Today, the Kotten, nestled in unspoiled countryside, invites visitors to relax and enjoy outdoor activities alike. The Wupper River, which once powered the waterwheels of the grinding mill, is now an attractive and popular recreational river.
The house—like the nearby village—is named after Duke Robert von Berg’s “Rüden.” According to legend, the dog saved the duke’s life during a hunting accident in 1424 by leading the scattered hunting party back to his injured master. Today, the faithful dog watches over the Kotten and the valley from his monument, the Rüdenstein.
In addition to the well-known tourist destinations, there are also many hidden gems that offer insights into the region’s cultural history. From the “Bergisch cities”—which also boast charming attractions such as the zoo, ribbon weaving mills, and the suspension railway in Wuppertal; the Müngsten Bridge Park; and the historic old town centers of Remscheid-Lennep and Solingen-Gräfrath—it’s not far to the major cities along the Rhine: Cologne, Bonn, and Düsseldorf. Each just 30 km away, they offer world-class culture, including opera, theater, philharmonic concerts, museums, and galleries.
The Kotten is also an ideal starting point for visiting trade shows in Cologne, Düsseldorf, and the surrounding major cities in North Rhine-Westphalia. Whether you’re a trade show attendee or part of an exhibitor team—after a strenuous day at the trade show, you’ll find relaxation and rest here in the valley.
