About this property

Private 3BR/2BA Home & Heated Pool, Downtown Scottsdale

Our colorful home is more than a vacation rental. We are veteran travelers who prefer a home to a hotel. We provide what we hope to find when on the road: a clean (and sanitized), welcoming house, comfy beds, central location, a well-equipped kitchen, lots of clothes hangers, WIFI, space to work if necessary, and privacy for all.

You just can't beat our location in Scottsdale. You're a few minutes' drive from the San Francisco Giants Spring Training Stadium (only a 35-minute walk or 20-minute trolley ride). Fashion Square, its upscale shops and restaurants, & 14 movie theaters are across the street. Fifth Avenue Shops & Old Town are within walking distance, or you can hop aboard one of the free trolleys that traverse Downtown Scottsdale. This is super convenient if you're into the vibrant nightlife in Old Town. PLUS, you are no farther than about 25 minutes by car from most anything else of interest in the Phoenix area... including the airport! The internationally acclaimed Musical Instrument Museum is about 25 minutes north, Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin West about 25 minutes northeast, and the fabulous Phoenix Art Museum is about 20 minutes west. You are about 10 minutes from the Desert Botanical Garden going south; the legendary Biltmore neighborhood is a few minutes west; and there are numerous nearby resorts. Walk, run, or bike along the Arizona canal (we walk there all the time), or take advantage of one of the numerous nearby hiking trails.

Our lot is like a little urban oasis -- in the heart of downtown Scottsdale! The backyard is huge, and easily accommodates a private pool as well as outdoor dining. The 3 bedrooms & 2 baths accommodate six guests easily, with comfortable queen-sized beds in each bedrooms. Two bedrooms share a full bath. The third has its own 3/4 bath. The kitchen is spacious & well-equipped (we live here part of the year, after all). There is plenty of seating in the living room, dining room, and breakfast room. We also have a propane gas grill available for your outdoor culinary efforts. There's a large table and six chairs for comfortable outside dining in the (huge) backyard. Oh... don't forget the POOL, which is heated and covered during cool months. Naturally, we are well-equipped with Wi-Fi & plenty of TV should you decide to forego all of the nearby activities & just stay home.

We have lots of maps and informational brochures for your use. The pool and backyard are surrounded by a wall, but the pool itself is not separately fenced. You MUST keep children with you at all times, even during months the pool is covered.

About the host

Host profile image
Hi! We are Ken Kobré and Betsy Brill, based in San Francisco. We have been on the road of life together +40 years. And we have traveled LOTS. We always prefer staying in a home than in a hotel.

Ken retired from teaching photojournalism and videojournalism at San Francisco State University in 2016. He continues to practice videojournalism independently. His documentary about rosé wine is available on the iTunes store and on Vimeo: "Révolution du Rosé." He is author of the best-selling textbook, “Photojournalism: The Professionals’ Approach,” now in its 7th edition. Betsy edited and designed all but the first edition. He is revising the 2nd edition of "Videojournalism: Multimedia Storytelling."

Betsy is an independent writer and editor. In addition to producing six previous editions of “Photojournalism” together, we have collaborated on many projects, including a year-long journey in 1996-1997 through Egypt, India, Bangladesh, and Indonesia to compare different approaches to microfinance – banking for the poorest of the poor. Betsy wrote and Ken photographed “The Power of Small Change.”

We also wrote and photographed together in the Democratic Republic of Congo to support the tiny non-profit, HandUp Congo, in its efforts to raise the quality of life in the remote village of Lotumbe, and to improve the reach of medical care in Congo through the highly respected Université Protestante au Congo. Ken has returned to Congo with HandUp Congo to document projects under way there, including training for emergency medicine, and modern beekeeping methods for Pygmies in Equateur Province.

Why they chose this property

Now that we are retired, we jumped at the chance to spend more time with our daughter here in Scottsdale. The three of us lived together in this house starting May 2016, and bought it in January 2017 when the owner told us he wanted to sell.

It's a great family compound for us -- and a super home to share. In addition to the 3BR/2BA home described here, there is an independent 1BR apartment on the south end of the house, where Dee lives. The set-up provides privacy to everyone.

As we have funded our apparent jet set lifestyle by renting our home in San Francisco when we are away, we decided to do the same in Scottsdale. Dee works full time locally but can look after the house and be available for our guests we are on the road.

In 2002, we bought a home in a little village in southern France. Ever since, we have shared it independently when we are not there. Search for “Our Place in Provence” to take a tour.

What makes this property unique

We have all loved this house since we first moved in as renters. As we're basically urbanites, we like being able to walk to Old Town Scottsdale, the "Waterfront," the stores, restaurants, and the Harkins Movie Theaters in Fashion Square. The house is just comfortable. One of the great benefits we realized after moving in is the ability to get to most places we want to go in no more 15-25 minutes by car! And longer trips north to Sedona and the Grand Canyon are certainly a highlight of our lives here.
