Just a stone’s throw away you have the swing bridge leading to the cobbled old town. Brimming with quirky independent shops, an abundance of cafés and restaurants and a great choice of pubs and gin bars. The 199 steps lead up to the cliff top where St Mary’s Church overlooks the town, next to the Gothic ruins of Whitby Abbey. In the harbour there is the HMS Endeavour, a replica of Captain Cook’s ship which was built and sailed from Whitby on his voyages of discovery. The ship is now a floating restaurant with a Captain Cook exhibition, a great spot for discovering more about the history of this seafaring town. Join a ghost walk through the town, visit the museums, you can even see a shipwreck at low tide at Saltwick Bay or look up into the cliffs to spot the smugglers tunnels, the clues to the towns colourful past are all around you.
For youngsters they are sure to enjoy exploring the rock pools, crabbing off the piers, or playing in the waves on the beaches. This is the perfect location to enjoy the best of the great outdoors. There’s a local surf school, horse riding centre, crazy golf, arcades, swimming pool and outdoor paddling pool – great for floats or water fights! Nearby you also have the rowing boats, kayaks, miniature railway and indoor play area in Ruswarp. The waterpark, sea life centre and castle in Scarborough. Zip lining, Segways and cycle tracks in Dalby Forest. Plus the Flamingo Land theme park and zoo. The historic town of York with the Yorvik Viking Centre, the minister, the city walls and its many museums are around and hour and a half away. For walkers and those who love to take in the scenery you have many scenic coastal villages along the Cleveland Way to visit, with golden sandy beaches, hidden coves and friendly little cafes and pubs – perfect for treating yourself after a day of exploration. You are also surrounded by the North York Moors National Park. There are ancient forests, rolling hills of heather as far as the eye can see, waterfalls and valleys.
