About the host

Michelle and Ian purchased Casa Luis i4 years ago and set about restoring and renovating it to be a lovely holiday home. Michelle is a painter and furniture restorer and has handpainted much of the furnishings to retain Spanish charm while being bright and airy. Michelle and Ian split their time between Scotland and Spain and while in Scotland, guests have our friend Jo, who has lived in Riogordo for many years, as a source of help, information and is on hand for any emergencies.

Why they chose this property

Casa Luis has an enviable location in the village, being one minute on foot to the main plaza with bars, restaurants, 2 small supermarkets, doctors, pharmacy and fresh gricers, butchers and fish shops, while being set back from the road through a picturesque Moorish arch in a quiet cul de sac. The house is set over 4 floors, with two roof terraces at the highest levels offering beautiful, unspoilt views across the countryside and hills. The house is so well located, being away from the many narrow streets, gives the feeling of space and light. The 2m x2m splash pool gives welcome opportunity to cool off in the height of summer and the top terrace is equipped with a bbq, sink, table, chairs and parasol providing a fabulous spot to eat or watch the sun go down.
Riogordo is a typical, unspoilt pueblo blanco where guests can holiday in Spain away from the high rises, discos and noisy pubs and glimpse the laid back life that still exists in this Spanish working village. Although most of the population is Spanish, there are some British, French, Italian and German families who have made Riogordo home, having visited the village in the past, fallen in love with its charm and moved permanently there. Michelle and Ian also plan to retire to the village, meanwhile in Scotland, they live with Rumba and Luis, their Spanish Martin dogs from the local animal rescue.

What makes this property unique

The village's location nested in the hills in the heart of Axaqrquia also provides an incredibly convenient base from which to explore many of the most beautiful towns and beaches of the South of Spain. By car, Malaga Airport is only a 40 minute drive, slightly less to visit Malaga City, Ronda and Cordoba are an hour and a half, Granada an hour and twenty minutes, and Seville two hours by excellent motorways. Closer to the village, the historic town of Antequera is just over half an hour, as is the beach resort of Torre del Mar - a popular holiday destination for Spanish and full of fabulous restaurants and bars including along the wide, safe, clean beach. For those who love adventure, group organised hiking, mountainclimbing and the longest zipwire in mainland Spain are only 20 minutes away at the stunning fortified town of Comares while the world famous Caminito del Rey gorge walk is also around an hour from Riogordo. Closer by the the beautiful Lake Vinuela, where you can go kayaking, cycling, fishing, paddle surfing or simply relax by the banks of the lake with a picnic. In Riogordo itself, there is horseriding, take in part of the Olive Route walk that travels through the village and if fortunate enough to visit Riogordo in April , guests can witness El Paso, one of the most well known religious celebrations in Spain which attracts visitors from far and wide, or in August, when the village again comes to life with the annual Feria, 4 days of celebrations day and night including the nightly candlelit procession through the streets.
