Location
The property is in the historical area called “Oltrarno”: the name translates to “on the other side of the Arno” and is on the south side of the river. Oltrarno holds the true essence of Florence: a quiet area with many green spaces, making it more relaxing than other parts of the city, making it more and more appreciated by tourists. The area is also famous for its artisans, its beautiful workshops, small shops and studios (especially antique and leather dealers): via Maggio is the heart of Florence’s antique trade. Over the centuries, Oltrarno became a stylish area where many aristocrats built their palaces and villas: the largest of these is definitely Palazzo Pitti, where the Gran Duca di Toscana lived. Palazzo Pitti now hosts many of the city’s most important museums and exhibitions. The area also features the Cappella Brancacci with magnificent frescoes by Masaccio, Masolino e Filippino Lippi, Piazzale Michelangelo with its breathtaking view of Florence, the picturesque church of San Miniato (one of the highest points of the city and the best example of Romanic art in Tuscany) and Ponte Vecchio with its many jewellers and goldsmiths. Palazzo Pitti is also home to the marvellous Boboli gardens, an open-air museum with sculptures dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries.
