About this property

Cosy and comfortable Riverside Cottage in Wroxham, the Gateway to the Broads

Bure Cottage is located in the exclusive Peninsular Marina by the banks of the River Bure at Wroxham, known as the gateway to the Broads. The cosy and comfortable self-catering cottage is south facing with views from the lounge onto the Marina, River Bure and beyond.

The double glazed cottage is suitable for breaks at all times of the year. It sleeps four with beds made up on the morning of arrival. The price includes electricity, heating, hot water, wi-fi and bed linen, towels and everything you would expect from a well-established self-catering cottage.

Weekly rental is Saturday-to-Saturday. Off-season short breaks of three nights or more are also available.

Enjoy the tranquil lawned waterside frontage from the outside seating area where you can watch swans, geese and ducks going about their daily lives. Herons can also be seen. In the evening, unwind with a bottle of wine while gazing at the wildlife and boating activity on the water.

Fishing is available anywhere on-site during the season. Watch boats chug by, hire your own - or take a river cruise on one of the many trips among Britain's largest protected wetlands. Magical waterways and broads dotted with quaint unspoilt villages, windmills and old riverside pubs to explore. It is a paradise for nature lovers.

The famous 400-year-old Wroxham Bridge and village centre is just a 5 minute stroll away with pubs, restaurants, fish & chips, cafes, a launderette, the famous Roy's superstores, McDonald's and two railway stations. One is on the mainline to Norwich and Yarmouth, and the other is the narrow-gauge Bure Valley steam railway to Aylsham.

There is so much to see and do being close to the beaches of Great Yarmouth and the North Norfolk coast. The historical city of Norwich is just a 30 minute bus ride or a short train ride away. Top attractions include BeWILDerwood, Blickling Estate, Felbrigg Hall, seal spotting at Blakeney Point, Norwich Castle and Cathedral and many other historical sites.

The minor cosmetic improvements necessitated by the normal wear and tear of a very popular holiday property do not detract from the enjoyable experience of holidaying in this lovely part of the country , with the river on your doorstep and the convenience of being close to Wroxham with all its amenities.

NOTE: Bookings paid through VRBO can only be accepted more than 48-hours before arrival.

Fabulous waterfront cottage!
This lovely little cottage was the perfect weekend away! The house is right on the water front so the geese greet you every morning and it is very central and within walking distance of all amenities- we will definitely be returning! Beautiful views!!

Pike fishing
The property is ideally located for fishing access although the owners boat could have been better located away from the property.

Beautiful location, welcoming retreat
We received a warm welcome at Bure Cottage with the host leaving an extensive welcome pack including a bottle of Prosecco in the fridge! The setting was perfect with marina views from every window. A short walk to the local shops, restaurants, pubs and day boat hire just round the corner I’d recommend a stay!

Wonderful short break
Easy to book, property clean and as described. Lovely touch of a bottle of Prosecco in the fridge plus chocolate and biscuits. A little challenging to actually find how to get through the barrier and where to park as there was no reception but after that all good and it is only a few minutes walk to the bridge, Broads tours boat hire and lots of great places to eat. Compact for 4 adults but has everything you need. Nice space outside to sit and watch the boats, swans etc go by. Recommend booking a day boat in advance if you want one - 6 hrs took us to Ranworth - lovely lunch at the pub and circular walk to Ranworth Broad visitor centre and amazing views from the top of the church tower. Walked to another nice pub the Rising sun at Coltishall alongside the steam railway (2 miles) but unfortunately at the moment they are not stopping there - only end to end return trips. Less than 30 mins to the beach at Caister on sea too. Overall a great break - highly recommend as there is so much to do.

Relaxing
Property was just right for my wife and I for the wwwk. The only disappointment was the boat that was moored up all week right outside the house. We didn't read that it would be there when we booked the holiday but I managed to do a bit of fishing as the guests next to the house were happy foe me to use their area. .

Location, location, location
The cottage is superbly positioned on the south side of the river, just round the corner, as it were from the main watercourse. This meant that on the one really fine day we enjoyed we could open the patio doors, step out and sit on the chairs provided and while away most of the day simply watching the boats go by and enjoying the antics of amateurs trying to manoeuvre boats into their berths (funny how you become an expert when you’re watching, even though you’ve never driven one of those things!). Furthermore regarding location, although it’s a bit of a dog leg to get the car to the cottage, on foot it’s really close to all the amenities. There is parking available directly outside but it’s insufficient if all the cottages are occupied simultaneously. That doesn’t matter as there’s a sort of general carpark just twenty yards away. As to the cottage itself I would describe it as on the way to being rather good. “On the way” as it’s clear that refurb is being undertaken bit by bit. The patio doors are clearly new (compared with the website photo) and I’d say the carpets are too. The cooker looks a bit ancient but we didn’t use it so that’s where my critique ends. As apartment owners ourselves we know you simply can’t refurb everything all at once, so we weren’t bothered. The cottage is cosy rather than spacious – it was absolutely ideal for a couple, and as it was just myself and my wife we really enjoyed it. We used the twin bedroom – both beds were nice and comfy and it was very peaceful (if you don’t count the swans early in the morning!). The double at the back is quite tight for space and I think if four people were in residence in poor weather it might get a little overcrowded. But for us it was a very nice stay, everything worked, and the admin side of things was handled very smoothly. I can’t comment on value for money as we are used to Spanish prices where we own our apartment and this was our first time in a holiday home in the UK for years. When booking it did seem comparable to other similar accommodation. All in all, would we stay again? If we were restricted to the UK, then definitely yes.

Short stay
Clean but tired property, bathroom could do with a lick of paint as there were stains down the wall from where it had gotten to hot in there at some stage and an insect or 2 had been squashed against the wall and left. One easy and cheap fix would be a chain on the bath and kitchen plugs Not so easy to pull out with long nails! View was somewhat marred by a boat moored outside the whole time we were there , somewhat puzzled by this as Bure Cottage is listed with your own mooring space outside your cottage. Couldn’t figure out how to turn the oven on the first night did get in touch with the owner who did reply but not with instructions on how to work it Which I did after 2 days The cooker though had seen better days

The cottage was very well equipped apart from our attempts to use the tin opener ending in failure so we had to ask a neighbour to lend us theirs. Lovely, quiet area and a friendly atmosphere.

Relaxing and comfortable.
Arrived to find a lovely surprise awaiting us to welcome us. First impressions were good and the ground level space was clean and looked comfortable. Upstairs was fresh and clean. Nice decor with homely touches. All the comforts of home and we had a lovely stay. Planning to go back some time again soon.

Peaceful holiday stay, great location
After a very busy European tour, staying at this Wroxham apartment/cottage was fabulous. The location is perfect, easy walk into the village full of restaurants, "Roy's" stores including a huge grocery and legit English pub. The cottage is basic so bring your paper and bath towels and be sure to look into every cabinet since I found the freezer two days after arriving. Plates, glasses, silverware, pots and pans, toaster, microwave, stove/oven, small frig and freezer, and hot water pot available. Discovered the coffee press after a few days of instant coffee, and no food items. (i.e. salt and pepper), although owner left a Welcome gift. We loved the swans, herons, and geese and all of the holiday boats coming and going. It's quiet at night and the bed was comfortable. "The Shed" pub next door was open but did not serve any food. If you stand by it, you get the best internet. We used the local bus to go into Norwich one day and it was cheap and very easy! We also rented a small motor boat (Broad Tours) to cruise the river to Horning and it was a great, relaxing time. We cooked simple meals most of the time but our last night we enjoyed a wonderful evening at the Wroxham Hotel across the bridge. Nigel, the owner, was very available but once we arrived, everything was quite easy to figure out. Some neighbors quiet, some chatty. As for transportation, we rented a car for the whole time, but you could get by using buses to the Coast, Norwich and even London, which we did for one night, then bus to Heathrow. Thank you, Nigel, for offering up your sweet place on the Bure River, The Broads, Wroxham, Norfolk. UK. :) Greg and Carol from USA.

Disappointed
On paper, place looks nice but in reality its a different matter. Probably just our personal expectations but although clean and in a good location, wasnt overly comfortable and we cut short our stay. May suit others, but definitely wasnt for us as there were too many niggly problems. Also there is a boat which appears to be permanently moored outside, making sitting in the lounge feel very claustaphobic and blocking any views.

Great location
Good location, easy access for Wroxham. Compact cottage, comfortable enough for a long weekend for four adults. Disappointing to be asked to bring own towels, cold tap on bath didn't work, small things you might expect to be there (like a little salt and pepper, for example) weren't.. The marina was full to bursting, so there were large-ish boats moored right outside the house, which was slightly disconcerting, but that could just be the time of year.

Nice cottage in great location
was worried based on some reviews but needn't have been. The cottage was clean and comfortable with lots of storage. A good kitchen with seating area & lovely bedrooms. We didn't fish & wouldn't have been able to directly outside of the cottage due to the boat moored, but was room just around the corner to do so if wanted. The sun was outside the patio doors for most of the day, so a lovely place to sit outside & watch the boats & birds go by if the weather good, but also a good view out if needed to sit inside. A very short walk into Wroxham, which has restaurants, a pub & Roys (a shop that has everything you can imagine in there)! Lots to do if stay close by or lots of trips on boats/trains or by foot to keep you busy or relax at the cottage. Only negative was a very poor wifi connection for us A great place to stay & we will return

needed a good clean, paint and carpet
It was advertised as being refurbished with new carpets. Upon arrival it looked fine, but the walls were grubby in the kitchen, the carpet was really worn as it had no underlay. The walls were marked from suitcases and bins hitting them. It was filthy between the cooker and fridge. The roller blind was covered in dead mosquitoes. Handle was falling off cooker door. We had to wash glasses on arrival. The bedroom curtain pole fell down as it had been fitted upside down?? At the side of the bath there was a brown mark and it was grubby. On the plus side the beds were comfortable but grubby on the skirting board around them. The bedding was nice and the local Shed Bar was very loud on one of the nights. The privacy partition between us and next door was missing. The heater in the bathroom kept cutting out after ten seconds. I wish I could add the photos I've taken☹

About the host

Hosted by Alec and Wendy

Host profile image
My grandparents used to live in Catfield, a small village a few miles east of Wroxham and we used to stay with them during school holidays and any other times we could escape there.. Later on my parents owned a holiday home on the River Thurne at Potter Heigham which we would visit for holidays all year round whenever we could find the time. We therefore know the area very well and owning a lovely property like Bure Cottage has finally fulfilled my dreams.

Why they chose this property

Wroxham is the perfect place for a getaway in the UK. Home to many shops, bars, restaurants and cafes, it is a lively town buzzing with energy. Life revolves around the river with private boat hire available as well as a number of organised river cruises where you can spot a huge range of aquatic wildlife including swans, a variety of geese and duck species, herons, cormorants and occasionally otters. Once you have experienced this magical location like this, you will want to keep on returning.
