About this property

Mountain View House Right on Soda Butte Creek

Come enjoy our little piece of paradise, about two miles outside the NE gate of Yellowstone and nestled between the idyllic mountain towns of Cooke City and Silver Gate, Montana. The front of the property offers great opportunities for spotting bighorn sheep and mountain goats on Mount Republic, and the back runs into the cool trout waters of Soda Butte Creek. Our mountain home is a perfect escape from the crowds, while also serving as a convenient base camp for animal watching, fishing nearby blue ribbon waters, hiking, horseback riding and much more.

The house features 3 bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms:
- Ground floor master bedroom with en suite bathroom (king bed)
- Second floor bunk room (two bunk beds; four twin beds total)
- Second floor bedroom (queen bed)
- Comfortable memory-foam full mattress in the living room pullout couch

We live in an apartment above the detached garage, so we will be near enough to answer any questions and offer assistance whenever you need it, but far enough away to respect your privacy. We have managed vacation rental cabins on the Bighorn River in southeastern Montana for over a decade, and bought this property and renovated the main house in 2017.

Awesome
The location is magical. The Silver Gate / Cooke City valley is just a special place, must be experienced to appreciate. The house is on the Soda Butte, which is a quintessential small Montana trout stream. The deck is a couple of feet from the stream and is great. We fished, and caught fish, right in front of the house all week. The pictures in VRBO are spot on, we saw Bison, Moose, and deer in the yard over the week. The Park is a couple of minutes away. And for us, the Lamar Valley and the three rivers, Lamar, Slough, and Soda Butte make this our favorite part of the Park. The house is very large and comfortable, in the Montana lodge style. The master bedroom is super. Anna and Joda, and their boys were great. Very helpful. Had great advice about how to enjoy the area. The hike to the Woody Creek Falls was amazing. Any little issues were dealt with very efficiently. We can not recommend the Mountain View House highly enough. Particularly if you have younger folks in the party, The Mountain View House is perfect, and you will be glad you stayed there - I know we are, and we'll be back.

Our best vacation!
The setting is beautiful! The creek in the back yard and mountains on both sides. The house has nice big windows to see out and watch for wildlife. We could not have ask for better hosts. Anna , Joda and their boys felt like family right away. They gave great advice on the area. The house is nice and big. Thanks so much for our wonderful time at your home!

Moose Meadow Magic
Nestled between two mountains, Republic and Mineral, along the bank of the Soda Butte Creek, this is a refuge worthy of the commute into the park, if that’s where you’re headed, or if you are just escaping to the area around Cooke City and Silver Gate. Yes, you can stay with the crowds in West Yellowstone or Gardiner and have easier access, although that depends on road construction and tourist traffic. Or, you can commute across the Lamar Valley and decompress from the traffic as you put your car in park because of a bison jam and watch the prong horn, bison, and perhaps some wolves up in the tree line as evening falls upon the American Serengeti. Staying at Moose Meadow was an experience that will never fade into memory. As we sat in the great room we watched bison, elk, and squirrels. Morning coffee was punctuated by visits from a black bear in the meadow and a red fox scampering across the wooden walkway. The cabin is comfortable and the hosts are friends you haven’t yet met — maintaining the perfect balance between privacy and being accessible to provide advice and assistance when needed. It was the perfect spot to visit the park and surrounding area and comes with your own little pocket of trout water if you are searching for tight lines. This retreat is the perfect blend of being away from it all while providing access to the northern gate of Yellowstone and the surrounding area.

My husband Joda and I consider ourselves lucky to call Cooke City-Silver Gate our home for a few months every summer. The rest of the year, we both work at Texas A&M University (gig 'em!). Since neither of us were born in Texas (Colorado and Ohio, respectively), we love escaping the heat and humidity every summer and breathing in the cool mountain air. We spent the summer of 2017 fully renovating and updating the property with our then-newborn son. Now, we live in a separate apartment on the property--close enough to answer any questions you have about the area, far enough away to respect your privacy!

We have managed vacation rental cabins on the Bighorn River in southeastern Montana for over a decade, and bought this property and renovated the main house in 2017.

Why they chose this property

Joda came to this property for the first time when he was twelve years old. He learned to fly fish right in this back yard, from the banks of Soda Butte Creek. More than two decades later, we had the opportunity to buy this little piece of paradise and renovate the house into our dream mountain retreat. We are located two miles from the northeast gate of Yellowstone and close to the scenic Beartooth Highway. We love this region because of the amazing amount of wildlife and beautiful vistas.

What makes this property unique

We are located down the historic Bannock Trail--an old dirt road that once served as a major thoroughfare for the native tribes and fur traders who frequented the area. The house is located far enough away from the crowds and noise of the park and town that it feels incredibly remote. But, we are only a few miles from the towns of Silver Gate and Cooke City, as well as the Northeast gate of Yellowstone National Park and the Beartooth Mountains.
