I grew up in Southern California. From the time I was a small child, we camped on the beach (in tents) and later in trailers. I loved the beach. As an adult, I visited the Hawaiian Islands. I decided I had to one day own a beach front condo. I searched for years for just the right property. This is my piece of Paradise, that I now share with visitors to the island.

Why Diane Lees, Tax ID# GE/TA-052-562-5344-01. We have on island Property Manager. chose Maalaea
When this condo came on the market I begged, borrowed and talked my grown children into buying it with me. It didn’t take much to convince them. All they had to do was watch a Virtual Tour and they were hooked. After the purchase, we spent more money remodeling and decorating. I keep the tropical feel of the condo because that was what we fell in love with. This is a wonderful, relaxing, and inspiring place!! I can sit on the lanai and have views of the Maui coastline that goes on for miles, or I can watch the waves dance along the shore while my grandchildren play just a few feet away. It’s the Hawaii experience I saw in the movies. The experience I dreamed about.

Perfect location for watching the whales ❤
This condo is wonderfully located right on the water on Maalaea Bay, where we enjoyed watching the humpback whales breech, spy hop and more. We saw calves frolicking with their mothers. It was absolutely perfect!
Diane's condo is beautiful and is the most well equipped rental we've ever stayed at. She has thought of everything. It is very obvious that the condo is a home away from home for her and her family, not just rental as a financial investment.
The beds are sooo comfortable and falling asleep to the sound of crashing waves is an added bonus. While there is only one a/c unit, and we didn't need to use it, there are plenty of fans to move the air around the condo, and take in the sea breeze.
We wouldn't hesitate to stay here again!
It was really wonderful to read your review. The four of you were the perfect guests, and it was great to learn you had such a good time at my condo and on Maui. Everyone's experiences are so different and an owner never knows how their guests feel (unless the do a review of their stay). I'm especially happy that you saw so many whales. That's what going to Maui this time of year is all about. You are welcome back, to stay at my place anytime. Thank you for renting my condo and treating it so kindly.
The condo is located in a perfect location? Our goal for this trip was whale watching and we went out five days with Pacific Whale Foundation which is located in the harbor within a short walk of the condo. Walking out the door of the condo, you are yards away from the water. We could sit on the lanai and watch the fabulous show the whales were putting on for us. You can easily access Wailea, Kihei, Lahaina, and Kapalua, on one side of the island,. A short ride will have you on the other where you can visit Iao Valley, Paia, and Hana.
Our only disappointment was the location of the sunsets. At this time of year the sunsets were behind land and not over the water. We went to Wailea for gorgeous sunsets reflecting on the water. Diane, the owner is wonderful to work with and very proud of her island home as well she should be!
I so appreciate you taking the time to write such a lovely review. It was a nice surprise to open my HomeAway dashboard and find it. All of you ladies were super guests. I am so glad you discovered the Pacific Whale Foundation and went whale watching with them. Five days, that is fantastic. They have always been my choice for whale watching due to their knowledge and dedication to educating the public about the whales. We are lucky to be just down the street from the harbor and their business/store. I hope at some future date you get to return to Maui, hopefully during the spring or summer so you can enjoy the sunsets from our location, when the sun sets into the ocean. It is beautiful.
Property is older
The condo flooded due to an older sewer system while we were there. The entire master bedroom window fell out, largely due to age as much as one night of gale force winds. Although it was put back in, we could not open for the two weeks we were there. The small air conditioner in the living room (Which shuts off after 4 hours) could not cool the condo. We purchased two additional fans but could never cool the 2nd bedroom and bath and consequently could not be used for sleeping. The sewer system encountered problems a 2nd time; the water was shut off for 8 hours (no Water or flushable toilets during this time). We were given one hour notice. From what we learned the sewer issues have occurred on a number of occasions. We were not informed that there was no longer beach access from our condo, which is the single biggest reason we rented this condo. We should have been given a choice to cancel but owner stated she “overlooked” advising us of this. So yes, I had my share of complaints. We were given an allowance of $175.00 as we did clean up after the flood and prevented further damage. We were given $425.00 allowance due to the owners “oversight” in not communicating the loss of beach access. The owner was responsive each time we had to call but there were too many incidents which resulted in a less than ideal vacation. This was our 7th trip to Hawaii and my first unsatisfactory experience.
Unfortunately, and completely out of my control, on their first day, the sewer backed up onto the bathroom floors. THE ENTIRE UNIT DID NOT FLOOD. The guests used towels to contain the water. Roto Rooter was there in 45 minutes. Everything was cleaned up and sterilized by my cleaning people. When these guests landed on Christmas Eve, Maui experienced record heat in the upper 90's. My ad states we have air conditioning in the front window. Every air conditioner at Kanai A Nalu has a timer so they don’t run 24 hours straight. We have six ceiling fans, three portable fans and a portable dehumidifier to help our guests feel comfortable. Also, on their first night Maui experience gale force winds that damaged one of our windows. They could open windows above the bed. The window is now repaired. I will admit, this was a horrible way to start a vacation. I was not surprised when that evening they wanted to check out. I felt very bad. I told them I would refund ALL their money. Being Christmas Eve, they could not find another accommodation. I even searched the internet for them. These guests had ONE BAD DAY and 13 enjoyable days. On the last day, the complex had to turn off the water for a few hours to the entire complex, to replace the sewer line. She states our unit is “old”. I advertise the condo is not "new", but is constantly updated and kept in good condition. Please read our other reviews to see what my guests have to say. When they booked my unit last year, and paid in full in August for Christmas, the beach and steps were fine. A month before check in, major storms damaged the steps For the rest of their stay they enjoyed the whales, the heated pool and our condo. Plus, it’s only a 5-minute walk, or 15 second drive to an amazing beach. For each problem I responded immediately. I was available 24/7 and stayed on top of everything. My Rental Agreement states we are not responsible for changing beach conditions, the weather, etc. Even though all these occurrences were not my fault, I discounted each of their 14 days, and refunded the cleaning fee. I try hard to make each guest’s vacation as nice as possible. But sometimes it's not possible. Receiving a 1-star rating when over 136 of my reviews are 4-5 stars in the last 15 years is not bad. In late spring and this summer when the sand on our beach gets really high again against our seawall, guests will be able to step right off of it, onto the beach.
Our stay at Maalaea
The condo was very clean and comfortable! Great location...easy access to all of Maui!
Would definitely look to rent it again!
I am so glad you had a good time on your vacation and at our condo. Hopefully the next time you can stay a little longer. You were the perfect guest, and I thank you for renting my condo and treating it so kindly.
Heaven on earth
What you see on the web site is exactly what you get.Diane provides everything a famil needs for a most comfortable stay.
I am glad you were able to have your brother fly all the way from Australia so you could enjoy a vacation together on Maui. I hope all of you have some wonderful memories and photos. Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review and give our condo 5 stars. I look forward to your return and with you Mother-in-law this time. Thank you for being such great guests.
It's right on the water!
I can't tell you how much fun we had just relaxing at your place. The central location was also great - easy access to Kihei and Wailua, and also a nice short drive to Lahaina area.
We spent A LOT of time on the lanai listening to the ocean, watching the turtles pop-up, and just taking it all in. We watched the sunrise over Haleakala every morning (and even made it up to the summit one day for a spectacular view above the clouds).
The proximity to the ocean was our favorite part - literally 15 steps away from the lanai! We miss the sounds of the surf and watching the splash of the spray as the waves rolled in.
We found a few great places to eat as well - the food trucks by the airport, Da Kitchen, and Beach Bums. Beach Bums is right at the harbor shops and you get enough food to eat for two nights easy! Also, the little market in the first building by the harbor is a good place to grab those little things you might need - condiments, snacks, liquor, etc...
Overall - we loved our stay and would recommend this place to anyone who is looking for that true oceanfront experience.
Mahalo nui loa!
What can I say, you truly were great guests. You had sent me an email informing me that "our lovely sandy beach was gone". You did not complain about the fact that the recent heavy storms this last summer, two hurricanes and then heavy surf had washed away the steps down to the sand. It was good to learn you could still access the sandy beach in front of the next door property. I am thrilled, that in spite of our rocky beach, you had a wonderful time at the condo and on Maui. As you said, you can still sit on the lanai and enjoy the waves, the sea turtles and the amazing sun rises and sunsets. In winter, due to Kona Storms the sand on our beach in front is normally lower and the rocks start to appear. But this year it happened months earlier. Plus the higher tides and rough surf did a number on our beach steps. I added to my condo's HomeAway description, that guests will now have to walk next door, or use the sidewalk to access the four miles of lovely sandy beach, just beyond our property. The complex is working on getting new steps built, but it may be a while. We are all looking forward to a sandy beach returning in spring.
Kevin, I hope you get the opportunity to return to Maui and my condo. It was a pleasure having you as my guests.
The Kanai A Nalu is one of only three complexes in Maalaea that is on a beach. The others 7 buildings are on a rocky reef (no swimming). Half use coin $$ operated laundry (sit and wait), two are next to the busy Harbor with boat engine noise and fumes, some have distant parking lots (carry the bags) and one doesn't have a pool. Kanai A Nalu is rated as one of the best properties in Maalaea. Almost at the end of a cul-de-sac, there is little traffic. Free parking is steps away. It has Tropical Grounds, Lush Lawns, A Heated Pool, BBQ's and Lounges. During summer, our beach has much more sand. Even when sand is less due to storms, hurricanes and high surf, our beach opens up to a reallly large beach that runs parallel to a Protected Wildlife Refuge. Endangered Turtles lay their eggs here. No development is allowed along this beach. It runs five miles, to Kihei. On an early morning walk you may not see another person. Explore tide pools. It's like your own private paradise and the most uncrowded beach on Maui. If you want crowds go to Lahaina, Wailea or Kihei.
The condo is only 12 minutes from the airport.
