About this property

Beautiful pet friendly riverfront vacation home on the Bantam River in Washington Depot

This historic circa 1850s property once served as a gunsmith’s shop along the beautiful Bantam River just across from the old depot. It has undergone an extensive renovation preserving the historic charm but modernized for a New York City family seeking a luxurious and peaceful retreat. The location is quiet, serene and private, yet convenient to the very best villages and attractions Litchfield County is known for. There are no other homes in view, yet the cottage is centrally located only 4 miles from downtown Bantam, Washington Depot and New Preston as well as Bantam Lake, Mt. Tom State Park and Lake Waramaug. Also close to several private boarding schools including The Gunnery and Rumsey Hall for visiting parents or faculty.

Nearby activities include the Connecticut Wine Trail, plentiful hiking trails, and the Woodbury Antique trail as well as several fine dining restaurants and spas including Winvian Farms, The Mayflower and Arethusa’s al Tavolo—all within five miles. The Cottage is beautifully appointed and sits on a private, ½ acre parcel of the Bantam River. The glorious sound of the river can be heard from every room. A large landscaped deck is beautifully furnished with comfortable seating, dining, a new Napoleon gas grill and fire pit. Near the water’s edge you’ll find a second fire pit and two wonderful Adirondack chairs. Across the large garden lawn are two comfortable garden benches nestled in the flower garden and at the forest edge—perfect spots for a quiet conversation or enjoying some time alone. An oversized hammock hangs in a small grove of majestic pines near the river’s edge as well. The cedar outbuilding holds lawn games such as croquet, badminton and even whiffle ball along with a whole house back-up generator ensuring uninterrupted power during winter. There are even granite steps installed to lead you into the river.

First floor includes a well-appointed kitchen with high-end appliances and kitchenware, living room with gas fireplace, window seat, entry with baby grand Steinway piano. There is also a first-floor bedroom with queen sized bed, armoire for storing clothes, bedside reading lamps, luxury lines, goose down pillows and hooded bathrobes. There is also a fabulous full bath with double marble vanities, claw foot tub and shower, towel warmer and a great view of the river. A laundry room with full sized washer and dryer complete the first floor.

Upstairs you will find a TV den, a spacious master bedroom with queen bed, and panoramic views of the river. There is a second bedroom with two twin beds, bedside reading sconces and wonderful views of the river as well. An oversized bath serves both bedrooms but has en suite access from the master. There is a free-standing glass shower, double marble vanities, towel warmer and window with a view of the river.

Amenities include original artwork, 400 Mpbs wireless internet, cable TV, Netflix, Sonos Wi-Fi music system throughout the property, built-in USB ports for charging electronics, high quality mattresses, high thread count linens, goose down pillows, luggage racks in every bedroom, gas log fireplace, a Dutch door in the kitchen, screened windows and doors.

Close your eyes and unwind with only the sound of the river and leaves rustling in the trees to surround you. The Bantam River Cottage is only 75 miles from Manhattan and about 20 minutes from the nearest Metro-North train station in Waterbury. Danbury, CT train station is 30 minutes away and Brewster, NY 45 minutes away. At just under two hours, but worlds away from NYC, this beautiful cottage is the perfect weekend or vacation getaway.

Relaxing week
We had a great time, exploring the area, hiking Mt Tom, fishing and floating in Bantam River. We found the sound of the river so relaxing, a great time was had by all.

The best cottage & stay
Simply put this was the best week. We truly loved every detail about this cottage. If I forgot something from home, utensils, a pan or even a bandaid it was thoughtfully provided. The surroundings both inside and out were idyllic and felt like a charming escape from everyday life. I've already recommend this house to family and I rarely make recommendations like that. Thank you so much Kathy & I can't wait to come back again!

Spring Break Trip
The property was one of the cleanest and most well stocked properties we have ever rented. All of the extra touches like towel warmers, tile warmers, cell phone chargers, and robes really made our stay extra special. Plus, the host was super responsive to any questions we had. We would definitely stay here again.

We are transplanted New Orleanians, now living in NYC. We originally bought the cottage as a respite from hectic NYC apartment living and want to share it with others until we can hopefully make this our full time retirement home. We love to cook, entertain and travel. We are huge dog lovers and enjoy spending time with our 2 bull terriers and as much time enjoying the cottage as we are able!
